I think it makes for the most believable story progression...in terms of the romance side.
Errm, how?
I think it's possible to just see Miranda as a fling.
I don't myself. I think she comprises the interesting parts of Ashley and Kaidan both (Kaidan's abilities with Ashley's human centric leanings. Except Miranda's ideals are educated, not based in inexperience). So in that case, it's good riddance to either one of them.
I definitely do not view the romance with Miranda as a fling.
However, I think the Ashley-Miranda-Ashley makes for the most believable stroy progression, in terms of the romance side because of this...
In ME1...Shepard meets Ashley...and they eventually become romantically involved in the first part of the trilogy. Her being the first love interest almost makes it destined for them to be together.
In ME2...Shepard "dies". Miranda rebuilds him. They really start to form a bond throughout the missions together. After Shepard encounters Ashley again on Horizon...it is easy to see him go to someone else, even though he has true feelings for Ashley. (remember it's been only a ?months? or so for him...and two years for Ashley, since they last saw each other) At this point, him and Miranda becoming closer is almost inevitable. I like to think that despite some of the dialog bioware makes Shepard say...that he truly does care for Miranda on an emotional level.
In ME3...Shepard is in "lockdown" for six months. It really puts a "damper" on his relationship with Miranda. He gets out and sees Ashley again. Right away, the team up (just like old times) and then he quickly almost sees her die on Mars. Seeing that brought all his feelings for her back...and then the Ashley romance plays out in ME3.
In that sense...I think that if you view each game as a movie in a trilogy...the romance storyline progression makes sense and is very believable.
