That's great. I hope you enjoy yourself. I hope everyone gets to play a difficulty that satisfies them.

However, you still don't 'earn' the success of the story and characters by playing the game on a higher difficulty.

it's called gameplay and story segregation. but that's besides the point. besides my point anyway. I'm not sure what your point exactly is that you're trying to make.

Also, I'd like to point out that I find games where you DO have to earn the succes of the story and characters by playing the game properly on a higher difficulty to be a lot more interesting (and yes, games like that do exist, there are plenty of them).

The other great thing about higher difficulty with these newer Bioware games is that they start feeling a bit more like the old ones in their heyday. Or some tactical RPGs like Gladius or Valkyria Chronicles. More consideration on what your next move will be, and less of a shooter.

I guess it's off the point, but just want to say it's not so bad. Try it sometime.

How much do you actually get from scanning anyway? I view them the same as I do MP: a cushion so I can avoid certain tedious missions or those that give me some trouble. I do think being a thorough player should be rewarded, though I'd prefer Fallout-style epilogues or in-game notification to necessarily affecting the endgame. I don't need the points from Grissom but I have never skipped it because of the horiffic consequences,[/quote]

I have enough assets that my Shepard can just go "Fuck All, BANZAI!" after Mars and still kick the Reapers ass. But I still go above and beyond in my game, and get every asset. It's rather irritating to not get rewarded for that in the game.

[/quoteThe game does reward you, if not in the way you'd like. Skip Grissom? Jack's a Phantom. Skip Hanar Diplomat? No Kasumi slide later. There has to be some kind of threshold for the best ending. If you have enough points to make that trivial, well, just go offline and those assets matter more.

I tend to like tsundere. That's stuff like Han/Leia right? First there's friction and coldness, then it warms over time? Yeah that's good.

Miranda was horrible tsundere though. She has less of a melting arc and more of a melting flip switch...

Yeah that's it. And you're right, Miranda is horrible tsundere.

It's just done so fast in ME2. They don't actually give her a cooling off period where she has the defrosting part. I think they should have saved the defrosting part until after Oriana's mission.

Too right.

I think she defrosts too fast even for a non-romancing Shepard actually.

"I'm not impressed."
"I'M IMPRESSED."

The important point this all leads to is that the attributes and qualities of the protagonist are not earned by the player. And thus that not only do qualities of the protagonist require no gameplay justification, but that none exist.

I remember when the term waifu was deemed insulting on here, people got really pissed off.

I remember the guy who used it perfectly for Tali (no offense to Tali-mancers but this was funny as ****)

I think it was Arcian. Anyway:

She is the western version of a Japanese waifu.

"Oh please, Shepard-kun, save my people and I will make love to yooouuuuuu ~uguu!!!11 Image IPB"

Shut up you! Miranda is so Tsundere!

Liara is clearly a western take on the shy virgin Japanese schoolgirl trope.

Agreed.

In ME2 Tali picks up the shy nerdy virgin torch after Liara's personality transplant.

However both are far better than DA2's panderlicious Merrill.

I didn't mind that, really. Certainly it helped me utterly loathe her a bit less on my first run.

So... what exactly is wrong with shy, nerdy virgins?

Probably should have added the "When Zahn is writing him" qualifier.

I tend to not count the entire Emperor Reborn storyline.

If it's in canon, it's in canon.

I'm one of the guys that doesn't disqualify stuff, even unpopular **** that really sucks in the EU unless it officially a retcon. Obviously, there is a lot of ****:

The Jedi Prince series... The Crystal Star... Vector Prime... Anything Karen Traviss did... the Revan novel...

At least from the JP series, we learned that Moffs hold Mofferences. That is so terribly bad that it breaks through the other side to badass.

That's what I love about the Star Wars EU; despite what people say, it's all actually very much ironed out and really doesn't contradict anything within the universe.

Yeah if you're a mindless Paragon drone who only uses the upper options.

No she's legit a horrible tsundere.

As I said, they made it go to fast - they should have held off on the defrosting part until after finishing her LM.

I didn't talk to her again until that point. Am I a horrible friend?

And yet, the movies will probably invalidate all post-RotJ canon.

You don't earn it.

You complete easy challenges that are trivial for anyone who spends any amount of time at all with video games. You don't earn the protagonist being skilled or smart or powerful with your determination and skill, because it requires no significant determination and skill.

If you don't care about gameplay at all and simply are in it for the story, than that's fine, but if that's the case then just admit it.

There is no shame in admitting that you're really only in it for the story. I know plenty of people like that. I however, am not one of them. I play games because I like the challenge and I like to be in the state of flow.

I am one of those people and I gladly admit it. I love the stories in games and is really more interested in getting to the next part. so I set my levels on easy and have a blast. However, mindless game play isn't fun either, I still want to use my brains to make the right choices and get the job done.

But they ARE earned and determined by the player.

When I play and do well, I earn exp. If I play on a higher difficulty, I earn more exp. When I earn exp, I become more powerful and get new abilities for Shepard.

When I play a nice guy, I earn paragon points. If I earn enough paragon points, I earn blue dialogue options, which will earn me a better outcome in certain scenarios.

Mass Effect might be a ******-easy game and nothing of what I just listed is exceptionally hard of challenging, but I still have to EARN it though. I don't get anything pro bono.

I first have to succesfully beat a level before I can progress into the story, earn exp, level up, earn cash, earn new abilities, earn better outcomes for the story, etc. etc. etc.

A lot. They're shyness (from lack of confidence) is off-putting. Nerdy is an undesirable trait in women when it's taken to the extreme. Virgins are... well... virgins. I don't care much, but I prefer someone who is experienced and confident.

It comes off as pathetic if you ask me. I need a real woman.

Do you believe the charm and intimidate options in Mass Effect are an 'easy win button'? That they render the choice meaningless because you can 'solve the conflict with a button press'?
