Where's the mini map?

Indoors should have a minimap though, unless the area is "on rails", which is very simplistic level design. You can't get lost, but there's no sense of scale either... just a straight line to the end. I hope dungeons are more complex than that.

i answered here already what the devs have said
I like the idea mentioned in your post about putting player notes on the map, something Skyrim could have learned from.
Anyway I am with the rest here, rather a mini-map than the Skyrim compass

I think we can find a compromise though. Have a mini-map, compass and an actual map window that you can open by ..idk about peasants but for master race its "M" button on the keyboard.
That way we all have multiple ways of navigating..
Seriously though, compass navigation is a piece of cake. Have done it in real life while trekking. Compass always point to magnetic pole north. If you are lost just follow it and other directions are relative to it. If you lost your compass, follow the sun or the constellations in the night skies.
If both those methods are impractical..say like in a cave, you make periodic markings.

What made Skyrim annoying was the Map, I mean seriously who makes a map without roads i mean seriously... however modders to the rescue on that one, its one of the mods that is always in my load order.
But yea minimap is more "DA" style to me. tho in reality do we need it? if we really need a map just put it int he options menu

I bet they don't put minimap because DAI have larger areas and not duplicate like in DA2

Good point. Even though I want one, I think a minimap can really influence your play by being a crutch. Trying to uncloud the map by exploring everywhere, or mainly looking at the map as you are going along. I think these things can limit more natural exploration of the world that would happen if we just wandered through it, going to places we thought were interesting.

Could do a combined mini-map compass, like in SW:tOR

I'm okay with the Skyrim-style compass, as long as I have access to a detailed map also. Not like the big overworld map of Skyrim, but something where I can see the actual twists and turns of hallways and obstacles.
But I'm also okay with a minimap. Either one works for me.

actually the mini map has always made it easier for me to cover as much ground as I dare. Showing me where on the map I could traverse before heading to my destination. Whereas the compass almost compels you to senter the quest mark on your compass and just walk forward.I kind of think they should use the compass method, remember they are emphasizing exploration. If you have a mini map you are more likely to follow that map as oppose to wonder haphazardly. On a mini map you are more likely to not notice places of interest that aren't directly associated with your current objective as its a small map which can't fit everything, where as the compass can at least like in skyrim show you various icon related locals that might interest you if you deviate from your intended course a bit.

for me the compass for skyrim really wasn't that bad of a thing, it let you explore and it didn't make me feel i was playing a MMO. but the map was almost 100% useless, I mean who has a map that doesn't have roads on it.. and funny enough alot of roads go to nice vista points and stuff.
Also trying to figure out if something was on one side of the range or another with the map was painful.
But for me 90% of the time with skyrim I played even without the compass (iHUD) for pc so, in all honestly I don't need the minimap, its nice but not necessary.

But if I had to choose between the Skyrim compass and mini map, I choose mini map. I'd like to see the outline of the terrain/level I'm in. Maybe that's why they picked te Skyrim compass, to hide the "outline" of the map so that it seems bigger and wider than it is.

I dunno, maybe cause I hike a lot and am comfy with a map, compass, GPS, etc but a mini map always makes my head spin.

I think the idea of the Skyrim compass was to make you explore and find things you didn't know existed because it only gave you vague hints at major landmarks. Pretty sure that's what DAI is aiming for too as they want you to explore the many secrets of Thedas outside the major landmarks marked on the compass. A mini-map kinda gives away where everything is and you run directly to it without wandering aimlessly around to find an entrance. You can see that as a good thing or bad depending on who you are. I personally like accidentally discovering new secrets when I'm trying to make my way into a new place.
It also doesn't steal the entire right/left side of your hud. IMO, compass isn't as intrusive on the hud. I don't really care which one is in the game, they're both fine to me.

I'm not fussed either way, they did mention they are working on implement a proper minimap though, I do sometimes like the more "explorative nature" of a compass over a map literally telling where the end of a road is or a cave is etc

I prefer the compass as shown in the PAX demo over a minimap. I believe a minimap just gives too much away of the lay of the land. If my character has never been to a particular place I just don't want a minimap showing a part of the surroundings my character has yet to actually see.

as some said, i would like to be abble to bring up a map, just to see where i am, and where i want to head to
I'd be surprised if there were no map at all.

Whatever they do, I hope you're able to toggle it. I loathe whenever something has a minimap glued to the screen and there's no way to disable it.

I really enjoy mini-maps, and i am the kind of person who likes to explore, like, every little bit of piece of the map, so a mini map helps a lot to see paths i did not go before, etc. That being said, I have played the elder scrolls (specially oblivion) and Fallout is one of my favorite franchises, and i am more than ok with their compass style map simply because i'm used to it by now, but some people find it a little difficult to use it, and having to open the map all the time to look for new places to explore is not always that fun, so an option to toggle mini on/off map would be the best choice i belive, at least it would please a great number of players.
