Ok well I would like to know how everyone obtains so much gold(soveriegns) so early in the game, i want to get the rose's thorn dagger but it cost a whopping 176 soveriegns i think if not really close to it.
also where do u get the knight commanders helm? and how much if you have to buy it.

My method for getting money is by making Potent Lyrium Potions and selling them. They're the only craftable item in the game that sell for more than the total cost of all the ingredients. It's rather tedious, but it feels more legitimate than the Crystal method.

What level are you for that amount of cash? I reached Level 10 and had 156 Soveriegns selling everything exept equipment that I used to upgrade as well as my dragon killing gear and companion gifts. I was saving up for the staff of the Magister Lord ~125 Soveriegns. If I sold most of my potions I would probably had reached my goal alot sooner. Oh, and I've mainly just done sidequest and Redcliff.

Weaponary sales and anything else I don't need.  I never craft so I sell all crafting materials.

I'm not one to change armours before battle.  So I find the best and keep it on till I find somethign better.  I pretty much sell everythign else.

Loot everything and anything that isn't nailed down.

Sell it.

Also, you might want to consider the "Phat Loot" mod. It adds random "magical" equipment to enemy drops, and they usually sell for 30 to 40 silver, a piece. Haven't figured out how it determines the prices for them, though. Some pieces, clearly being of better material, quality, bonuses, etc, went for 50 silver, while a piece of crap tier 4 item (2 tiers less than the others I was selling) went for a 1 gold and 30 silver....Anyway, it's something to keep in mind.

Failing all this, I've heard that some people were able to max out Leliana's pickpocketing talents and just steal from everything in sight. Never done this path. Just seemed a bit too tedious.

There is also a belt somewhere in the game that makes you get more loot. I forgot where I saw it though.

I think in Orzammar.  Has anyone tried that belt and does it really help?

Edit:  5% gain and Bodahn sells it.  Isn't that campsite?  I forget the names. ;)

I stopped by to post the exact same thing! The prices merchants give you just reeks. I think it cost me more to get the thieving side quest in Dernin (sp) than I got out of them. I know there is a mod that raises what the merchants buy stuff for, but why would you need to mod something so basic? Does anyone know if merchants are influenced by your race? I mean, do they pay more to humans, than Dalish?

Knight Commander's helm is from finishing the Crow's quests in Denerim.. but TBH if you want to get the same look+better stats just stick with the blood dragon helm.

That dwarf at camp, I think has the higest prices of any merchant.  Kinda strange sense you constantly deal with that guy.

Tips for maximizing gain.

1. Never, ever buy from Bodahn if you can at all help it.

2. Buy consumables from merchants that sell unlimited quantities of them (as long as their name isn't Bodahn).

3. Comparison shop the price of common items from merchant to merchant.

4. Ruck is the single most expensive merchant in the game. The 'Wonder' at the Wonders of Thedas is the high price of everything.

5. Dwarf noble origin characters can make amazing amounts of cash just by always selling to Gorim only.

6. Loot everything.

7. Specialize your companions into crafts. Wynne and Morrigan should learn herbalism. Zevran and Lelianna should learn poisons. Never buy what someone can make.

8. Do not buy armour or weapons until just before the last battle. You won't need it until then and if you out level it, you will be throwing gold away.

9. Don't buy specialty arrows or bolts unless you're buying from a very short person standing on a mound of genlocks. Blow all your cash when you see him. You will never need it again.

10. Do buy recipes for things you use. If you're running a three rogue team, poisons are wonderful. If you don't plan on using a healing mage, health poultices are a must-have. If you have mages in your typical team, you will want lyrium potions. Having said that, the lowest potions and poultices are the best value.

Money makers:

1. Don't be so compulsive. Sell crap. You won't "accidentally" sell anything you need/want. Things you need are quest items and things you want have a name that isn't "Longsword" or "Armor". Aggressively sell everything else because it is this dribbling of items that really adds up over time.

2. Toss one rank into theft and it will activate Slim in Denerim which has some money makers.

3. Save up before you go to Orzammar - 40 so you can be a Lyrium smuggler for good money.

Lie. Cheat. Steal.
Get high persuasion levels. Have someone get high levels of pickpocket. Complete quests and ask for rewards. When rewards options has higher returns with persuasion checks, grab 'em. Most quest do not have adverse effects if you play the "greedy guy". Below are some noteworthy quests/events I can rmb.

[Spoilers]

Lothering: Lowly Merchant (pickpock)
Redcliffe: Llyod (profit-sharing)
Denerim: Crimewave quest (can be exploited), Vaughn (gold chest), Help Clear Bandits
Deep Roads: Precious Metal Quest (pick Rogek too), Asunder quest, Help Orta
Brecilian Forest: Ironbark quest
[/Spoilers]
Before Landsmeet, I had Roses Thorn, Felons Coat, Audrils Blessing, Knight Commanders Plate, Spellward, Staff of the Magister Lords, Lifegiver, GM runes, Arcane Tomes. Without lyrium exploit

After my first playthrough, I started cheating to get my gold. I found it tedious to pick up so much worthless loot and sell it to the vendor.

But on my first playthrough, I had over 200g leftover after buying phat loots from simply managing my gold well.

Rogue with lockpick and being thorough in looting will amount to tons of gold. Armor has the best inventory space per coin ratio.

I have amassed up to 400 G before Landsmeet and this is without any cheats and I play a goody-goody (I refuse rewards if offered, I never play hard ball for more money, refused the Slim stealing quests, etc)

Good job by BioWare of preventing the millions-of-gold-and-nothing-left-to-buy problem many games have. Too good a job.
I'm doing my fourth play through and got tired of being poor.
I found out how to use the toolset to edit my save file to increase the prices that Bodhan pays - 25% markdown increased to 50% markdown. I always sell to him. I have adequate cash to buy what I want, but still not overflowing with gold.

EDIT: with that change, you can make almost a sovereign and a half profit per potent lyrium potion.

I'll assume he means the junk selling glitch. place a valuable item in junk, go to a merchant, go to the junk tab, press "sell all junk" and press the button to sell the item highlighted immediately afterwards. If you can get the timing right, you get x2 gold (1 for the junk sale 1 for the item sale) buy back said item, wash, rinse, repeat.

I did this on my first playthrough and TBO it steals all the fun and challenge of the game to be instantly uber. not to mention that voice in the back of my head that shouts "BUG EXPLOITER!" the same way one would yell "THIEF!":bandit:

*i ended the playthrough with something like 5000 gold
