Get bigger bags, huge bags are the best way to spend gold on at the start.
Do all side quests you can get, they award quite some money (also drops to sell and XP)
If anyone offers an award, take it. You can always kill him after you got the money or let him rot in prison.
If you have to persuade/intimidate someone to get an award, use it.
Don't buy any gear until late in the game.
But don't forget, before the endgame spend any single piece of gold you have, it will not carry over to the next expansion (is that a spoiler?)

The challenge is to NOT use it once you know about it.

Tips for maximizing gain.
1. Never, ever buy from Bodahn if you can at all help it.
2. Buy consumables from merchants that sell unlimited quantities of them (as long as their name isn't Bodahn).
3. Comparison shop the price of common items from merchant to merchant.
4. Ruck is the single most expensive merchant in the game. The 'Wonder' at the Wonders of Thedas is the high price of everything.
5. Dwarf noble origin characters can make amazing amounts of cash just by always selling to Gorim only.
6. Loot everything.
7. Specialize your companions into crafts. Wynne and Morrigan should learn herbalism. Zevran and Lelianna should learn poisons. Never buy what someone can make.
8. Do not buy armour or weapons until just before the last battle. You won't need it until then and if you out level it, you will be throwing gold away.
9. Don't buy specialty arrows or bolts unless you're buying from a very short person standing on a mound of genlocks. Blow all your cash when you see him. You will never need it again.
10. Do buy recipes for things you use. If you're running a three rogue team, poisons are wonderful. If you don't plan on using a healing mage, health poultices are a must-have. If you have mages in your typical team, you will want lyrium potions. Having said that, the lowest potions and poultices are the best value.
I generally agree, except for:
8. The Felon's Coat (for rogues) and Evon the Great's Mail (for warriors) are excellent Tier 7 armors that you won't outlevel, but are only available from Wade's and Herren's up until you buy the 2nd drakeskin armor from them, so plan ahead if you wish to buy them.
9. Don't buy specialty arrows or bolts at all--you will loot more than you'll ever need from chests/drops.
And, speaking of drakeskin armor: to get the "superior" versions of the 2nd set of drakeskin armor and the dragonscale armor, all you need to do is give Wade 10 sovereigns when you have him make the first set of drakeskin armor. You do not need to give him any more sovereigns as an "incentive" after that.

Otherwise just take a rogue everywhere and loot EVERYTHING you see - selling the loot really does add up.
If your a Dwarf Noble you can also sell everything to the dwarf merchant in Denerim for double what every other merchant pays.
In all honesty money just isn't an issue in the game. Because the awesome items are available for nearly the entire game the prices have to be reasonably high to prevent you being overpowered early on.
According to my Heroic Accomplishments I've spent around 900 gold by the end game. You just have to remember that these things are paced and you can't expect to have uber equipment 10 hours in the game.

My method for getting money is by making Potent Lyrium Potions and selling them. They're the only craftable item in the game that sell for more than the total cost of all the ingredients. It's rather tedious, but it feels more legitimate than the Crystal method.
Same as me. I managed to buy every item i wanted with this.

I stopped by to post the exact same thing! The prices merchants give you just reeks. I think it cost me more to get the thieving side quest in Dernin (sp) than I got out of them. ...
You will always net a profit doing the quests for him. I usually came away with 4g profit per quest or so.
8. Do not buy armour or weapons until just before the last battle. You won't need it until then and if you out level it, you will be throwing gold away.
Most of your other advice was solid, but what the heck kind of advice is this? The end of the game lasts like two hours in a forty+ hour game. Why would you wait till the end to have good gear, when you're one-shotting all the darkspawn anyway (and the Archdemon is a joke)? People, don't wait till the end of the game to buy good gear. Just make sure that the gear you're buying is good. This isn't World of Warcraft or some other MMO where only max level and the "end game" matters.
Tip: Most of the gear that's worth buying is at least 80g. I can only think of a few items that are worth spending money on that are less than that.

If you want to have the best stuff, then by all means buy it. It's just not needed is what I am saying. The OP asked a question and I was trying to answer it.
There is a large gap in pricing between the top of the line vendor merchandise and the rest of the stuff they sell.
There's a good reason to buy the good stuff at the end of the game. Apparently your gear will carry forward into any expansions. So you may as well equip yourself as best you can. Of course, that strategy relies on a belief that future expansions will actually be released....

If you don't mind the semi-exploit make Superior Lyrim Potions. Even better if you are a dwarf noble, because you can do it as soon as you have rank 4 herbalism. It is a battle of willpower to not abuse that exploit. 200+ gold in 1 hour.

I hadnt seen anyone mention this so I will. When you're rescuing Queen Anora, you can talk to Vaughan from the city elf origin. He's locked up in the dungeon. If you talk to him and you demand a reward to let him out, you can go in his room upstairs and there's a chest with 40 gold in it.
Yea, I was thinking about posting that. Is that a key only or can you pick that lock? Too bad you couldn't get to that sooner in the game.

There are a few VERY lucrative quests. Namely the Lyrium smuggling operation in Orzammar and the Crime Wave quests. Both can get you a decent amount of gold (100+ just from the Lyrium smuggling) early in the game. Was the 100+ gold on the lyrium smuggling including going back to the guy who started it? I persuaded him down to 40 gold then the mage only offered 50 with an option for 75? as well. I told him he wasn't serious and I'd come back later thinking it would raise the price and I never go the option to sell him the lyrium again so I sold it at a stupid merchant for 12 gold and ended up losing 38 gold on the deal.

You have to be kind of a masochist to do that, though. I did that for the first time on my currect playthrough (my first nightmare run), and I ended up having to leave and do the DLC content to get to a high enough level to beat Jarvia (other than that it wasn't too bad, though I did go through a ridiculous number of poultices.)Sylvius the Mad wrote...
