Was the 100+ gold on the lyrium smuggling including going back to the guy who started it? I persuaded him down to 40 gold then the mage only offered 50 with an option for 75? as well. I told him he wasn't serious and I'd come back later thinking it would raise the price and I never go the option to sell him the lyrium again so I sold it at a stupid merchant for 12 gold and ended up losing 38 gold on the deal.
To get the most out of that quest you have to persuade the dwarf to give it to you at the lowest price (not sure how much that is now) then go to the mage and persuade him to sell it for the highest price (somewhere around 60 gold I think). Then go back to Rogek for a finders fee (25 gold I think). You can also pickpocket Rogek when you go back to him for an extra 20 gold. Not bad at all

?? How? Don't think I've ever had 250 gold even at my richest and I'm pretty frugal.
To be truthful I started with about 40 - 50 gold. Going through the landsmeet you can do the Crime Wave quests, persuade a noble prisoner to give you a hefty chunk of cash (somebody's already mentioned this) and loot everything, there are quite a few enemies. Most of the bosses in that bit of the game dropped 5+ gold for me. There's also Arl Howe's treasure vault which contains about 30+ gold of loot if I'm not mistaken.

Buy every backpack and pickup everything you come across. I've never had to craft anything to get sufficient money. Usually ending playtroughs with around 300g unspend.
I agree on the backpack thing, having as more room as possible helps you to prevent discarding items you can sell.
About the 300g.. well I 'm almost at the end of the game (first playthrough), and have 130g more or less, but I liked spending my money on gear upgrades, item craftings, offerts and so on... plus, instead of selling unused items, i preferred giving them to my benchwarmer characters

This is what I do but I still find it hard to get money. Though I just finished a Bhelen task of killing Javia, or whatever her name was. It gave some cash ... items to sell.Treason1 wrote...
Loot everything and anything that isn't nailed down.
Sell it.
I was stupid enough to not charge for my other dwarven errands. I thought my party would take offense if I demanded compensation. My bad.

Tips for maximizing gain.
1. Never, ever buy from Bodahn if you can at all help it.
2. Buy consumables from merchants that sell unlimited quantities of them (as long as their name isn't Bodahn).
3. Comparison shop the price of common items from merchant to merchant.
4. Ruck is the single most expensive merchant in the game. The 'Wonder' at the Wonders of Thedas is the high price of everything.
5. Dwarf noble origin characters can make amazing amounts of cash just by always selling to Gorim only.
6. Loot everything.
7. Specialize your companions into crafts. Wynne and Morrigan should learn herbalism. Zevran and Lelianna should learn poisons. Never buy what someone can make.
8. Do not buy armour or weapons until just before the last battle. You won't need it until then and if you out level it, you will be throwing gold away.
9. Don't buy specialty arrows or bolts unless you're buying from a very short person standing on a mound of genlocks. Blow all your cash when you see him. You will never need it again.
10. Do buy recipes for things you use. If you're running a three rogue team, poisons are wonderful. If you don't plan on using a healing mage, health poultices are a must-have. If you have mages in your typical team, you will want lyrium potions. Having said that, the lowest potions and poultices are the best value.
9 is funny, however, can we safely assume that we won't need cash when the next DLC comes out? I think it would be a mistake to consume all ones gold at that point.
Sadly, I've been very disciplined about only buying items I really need for my main character on this second play through and I'm not sure I'll have enough cash for all the gear I want... Chasind Great Maul, Lifegiver, and that sweet belt total more than 350-400 gold... not sure where the rest of it went cuz it seems like there's about 800 sovereigns in a playthrough... but, I haven't done the forest or landsmeet yet so maybe there is hope... problem is I don't think you can leave Denerim to buy stuff after Landsmeet commences can you?

The easiest way to get money is loot everything and sell everything that isn't unique, as you level up the loot gets better so you can get more money. So after level 12 you will start to get a lot of money very quickly.

Thanks
On reflection, holding onto your cash might be the best plan. I think someone posted that we get to keep our stuff, if that includes cash and if there is a place to spend it in the expansion, then not being profligate is probably a good idea.

There are a few VERY lucrative quests. Namely the Lyrium smuggling operation in Orzammar and the Crime Wave quests. Both can get you a decent amount of gold (100+ just from the Lyrium smuggling) early in the game. There are also a few good sources of cash during the Landsmeet - I got 250 gold from that portion of the game alone.
Otherwise just take a rogue everywhere and loot EVERYTHING you see - selling the loot really does add up.
If your a Dwarf Noble you can also sell everything to the dwarf merchant in Denerim for double what every other merchant pays.
In all honesty money just isn't an issue in the game. Because the awesome items are available for nearly the entire game the prices have to be reasonably high to prevent you being overpowered early on.
According to my Heroic Accomplishments I've spent around 900 gold by the end game. You just have to remember that these things are paced and you can't expect to have uber equipment 10 hours in the game.
Agree with pretty much all of this. If you're doing Crime Wave, don't forget to look around for Slim right before the endgame, and get him to send you back to Bann Franderel's a second time. Level 4 stealing on a rogue, plus a tactics entry for "try to steal from the big kahunas while in combat" can get some extra cash and sellable items. Remember also that pickpocketing from stealth (even level 1 stealth) will make stealing easier.

No, there is definitely a conversation path where you can push Godwin too far...I had level 4 coercion and plenty of Cunning (>30) and still managed to hose myself...had to reload from last save, which fortunately was just before entering the room. He went back into his wardrobe to hide, and I really wished I could have fireballed him...

- Sell all special ranged ammunition, even if you have an archer. It's far to expensive to be throwing away, for their generally small benefit. Selling 40 fire arrows will net you a reasonable amount of gold.
- Favour spell-based healing over poultices whenever possible. Mana regenerates, gold doesn't.
- Use potions, poisons, bombs and poultices only in boss battles or battles you just can't beat. Even crafting can be really expensive.
- Remove "Use Item > Health Poultice" from any tactics, as NPCs follow this to the letter, even if the battle is just about to end.
- Use combat strategy and crowd control to prevent you from getting swarmed and taking lots of damage (terrain, doorways, sleep, etc).
All of these means less gold disappearing from your pocket, at the expense of making combat slightly more difficult/involved.

I hadnt seen anyone mention this so I will. When you're rescuing Queen Anora, you can talk to Vaughan from the city elf origin. He's locked up in the dungeon. If you talk to him and you demand a reward to let him out, you can go in his room upstairs and there's a chest with 40 gold in it.
Yea, I was thinking about posting that. Is that a key only or can you pick that lock? Too bad you couldn't get to that sooner in the game.
If I'm not mistaken, you can only open that chest after you ask for the reward and you dont have to pick it. It's one of those chests that you cant interact with until you talk to him, by the way. (like the chest that holds Sten's sword in Dwyn's house)

>_> wasnt hard at all(did have to reload once or twice when i fat fingerd a response too soon)

Ah, so are you stealing during combat or do you just mean drops from dead bosses? Because naturally I loot everything, Howe's treasury included, and like I said I get nowhere near 250 gold.Banon Loire wrote...
