I'm just wondering if there is some way to calculate the time of the collector attack. Does it take place as soon as a certain # of crewmates are attained on your team? Does it take place as soon as a certain number are loyal? Does it take place a certain number of "missions" after you get your hands on the Reaper IFF?
I'm wondering because I want to try and get the crew to survive maybe this playthrough, and I read the guide that indicates that more of the crew will survive the mission if you rescue them sooner than if you do more loyalty missions first or something like that.
Is there some benefit to having more of the crew survive (a benefit that follows you into ME3?)

Benefits to having the crew survive: If Kelly agreed to feed your fish, then you can get them back from her in ME3. You can also romance her in ME3. Kelly will also contribute a war asset if she survives the coup. If both Gabby and Ken survive you get a fair amount of ambient dialogue btw them and you can encourage a romance btw them. Gabby will also contribute a war asset.
The easiest way to ensure that the kidnapping does not occur until you are ready is to do all loyalty quests and side quests before getting the IFF. If you have any loyalty quests in your queue when you get the IFF, you can still do at least two of them. (Not sure if you can do 3, I don't think so.) This opens up an interesting option: Save Tali's loyalty mission for last, get the IFF, do Tali's loyalty mission and bring Legion with you, return to Normand and speak to Legion to get his loyalty mission (very important: do not use the galaxy map after returning to the Normandy until you speak to Legion) and do it. Kidnapping will occur at the end of Legion's loyalty mission. Bringing Legion to Tali's trial will give you many extra dialogue options.

Oooh, bringing Legion to Tali's trial! I love Legion, this sounds interesting! Legion is such an interesting character for me. Talking to him made the game better than new for me.. all over again. Can't wait to give this a try! Thanks for help.
Edit: one second thought I had though is, the suicide mission guide says you need to do the suicide mission while having ZERO missions completed between the time you open the Omega 4 Relay and the time you do the Suicide Mission - in order to have 100% of the captured crew survive. Does this mean the Omega 4 Relay doesn't "open" until a couple missions after you get the Reaper IFF (so that you have time to get the loyalty of Legion & Tali prior to assaulting the Collector base?)

Not sure I understand. Basically, once the crew is kidnapped you need to go through the relay if you don't want to lose any of the crew.
You can delay the time btw getting the IFF and the kidnapping by having active loyalty quests. So if you save Tali's quest till after getting the IFF, the kidnapping will not occur right away. After the quest is complete, if you go speak to Legion before using the galaxy map you will pick up his loyalty quest. This will again delay the kidnapping. Once his quest is done the next time you go to the galaxy map EDI will inform you the IFF is ready and you will get the kidnapping. At this point you need to go to the Omega 4 relay right away or you will lose Kelly and Gabby.
