I think people who get ninja-manced just click through conversations without reading (or can't read) and then blame Bioware for it. People managed to get "ninja-manced" by Zevran with whom you have to confirm TWICE that you want something more. It's not Bioware's fault if someones reading comprehension is bad .

I do honestly think Leliana has a bug, else there is no logical reason for her going from "You and Zevran seems to be having fun" to "You promised me that you would break up with him." without any kind of warning.  (Unless she is crazy.)

yeah i've only ever had that happen with leliana and i think it's either a bug or there's a really ambiguous option in there that i missed. but as for people who claim to be ninja-manced by zevran, i think they must have sped through the dialog without reading it and then gotten pissy at bioware. well that and straight boys with straight boy characters who don't wanna admit they wanted that elven assassin lovin

Or just wasn't smart enough to realize what Zev meant with massages. (Even if it was painfully obvious.)

ive actually seen people who claim they didnt understand what he meant......i wonder about how true that is. but even so they got rid of that whole issue with the big glowing heart icons in da2 so i kinda side-eye people who use ninja-mancing as a reason why bioware should scrap the multiple romances.

Mass Effect ones irritated the hell out of me, just for the fact of having to constantly reinforce the fact yes you still wanted to be with them from game to game an most of the time having to then repeat that like 10 times before it was locked down, romance arcs couldve been handled alot better there from game to game, but guess it was down to resources or somein

I had a serious discussion wiht someone on this very board who claimed to not even realize that his warden had actually had sex with Zevran untill we broke the news to him (I am still not sure if he was a troll.), but there was some bugs in da:o that could activate the romance, so ninjamance was possible.

In da2, though. You had to pick the heart option continiously in act 2 to start the romance, ninjamancing was just not possible.

I imagine Cassandra will be both a male and female option. Varric dwarf female exclusive. Vivienne, depends how old she is. She was only just going to be made First Enchanter so she could possibly be late 30's, early 40's.

I don't think Varric will be dwarf female exclusive because that seems like a fairly limiting use of resources. Gaider has expressed that the resources (time, money, etc.) that goes into romances is one of the reasons why the player-sexual LI approach has been taken. I just can't see them creating an LI that you can only access with 1 out of 6 gender/race combinations. Particularly because dwarf female is probably the least popular of the combinations.

If Varric is available, he's going to be available to everyone, just like the other LI's.

ah that'd make sense then. personally i always romance zev so i wouldn't have noticed, not to mention my game is so heavily modded and full of bug fixes from the nexus that i can't really tell what's a romance bug and what isn't.

initially i didnt really see them making varric an option but with the added dev time they might be able to do like, 4 'playersexual' romances a la da2 and then throw in some extra, gender and race exclusive ones on the side. so you get, say, cassandra, sera, cullen, and some 4th guy that can be romanced by any player, and then varric for female dwarves, and another extra romance option for male pcs or somethin. thats a bit more...detailed? than i would expect but with the extra year tacked on, who knows how much theyll expand on things.

I think Cassandra would be a male-only LI, if she is at all.

Orlesians seem really open-minded, so I think Vivienne would be player-sexual.

I just want a man to woo me, are men like intimidated by female protagonists? A strong bold heroine? Why is it always up to me to dig into his pants? Why can't he man up and shut me up and just TAKE ME. I'm talking to you, Alistair.

I was hunting for BG2 mods a while ago and I chuckled at the "Flirt" mods that had the explanation of "it's too bad that the PC can't initate anything and the LI NPC always does!" Nowadays if an NPC comes onto you people run to the forums to throw a fit about how someone they don't want to romance is flirting with them and ruining their immersion. (Just look at all the DA2 Anders QQ.) Is it so bad to have a mix of both, especially considering the NPC or PC's personality?

I actually wanted Anora's dad. I wanted him bad. I wanted him in the throne room right in front of her. During Cailain's wake. Ontop of the casket.

Meh, I'm more into wooing the guy personally, or slowly falling in love over the course of developing a friendship, but different stokes I suppose.

Feh, Duncan was way hotter than Loghain!

I am still mad my mage gal wasn't able to jump on him after guiding him to his room.

In my defense I'm closer to Duncan's age than most

You never saw Garrus talking about relieving steam before battle ?

Even the deadly serious, militaristic Thurians "do it" in the middle of wars, you know ?

It wasn't really "Hey I just met you, let's make out" because while we were still relatively new to the characters as the player Hawke had known them for 2 years by that point.

The real problem was that while they presumably told Hawke all of this information during the gaps the player had no idea. The companions said that they really liked Hawke and had got to know him personally, but as the player I didn't want to be told that my Hawke and their LI had got to know each other over the years, I wanted to see it.

It was the same with Bethany/Carvers death at the beginning. We were told how sad Hawke was because of how close he and his siblings were, but we only saw them interact for about ten minutes before the death, so the player doesn't really care.

It's why I disliked the time skips. I want to be shown each stage of a characters developing relationship with the PC, be it a friendship, rivalry, hatred or romance. What I did not want was a brief overview of what happened while I wasn't there.

I generally compress the timeskips when i'm playing DA2 as they don't think they make any sense for the story or the relationships being built between characters.

Bioware should never stop doing romances! For some people (perhaps I'm one of them) they really make the game if you can get emotionally involved in them.

The Mass Effect series did the romance perfectly in my opinion. I couldn't have asked for anything better. Every time I chanced across a romance scene, my fangirl instincts kicked in and I got excited! Mass Effect moderated when and where you could continue the romance, wheras in DAO, you could just keep clicking on your LI over and over (Zev is the example of this) and watch about 20 minutes of scenes all at once.

The romances are a way for you to become even more emotionally attached to a character. Bioware wants us to care about the characters around us. Their games are based on story, and how can we enjoy the story if we don't care about the protagonists?

Plus they allow for gratuitous sex! Everybody wins!

Well said! Totally agree!

See, I never got what it was about Duncan that made the fangirls go wild. Though he was one of the more attractive guys in Dragon Age, granted. Same thing with Cullen. I can understand why players would like him, I just don't feel it.

Then again, seeing as the guy I was most attracted to was the one that tried to kill me on numerous occasions...I'm not one to judge.

On another note:

There were two things concerning romances that I kinda missed in DA2.

1. Jealousy dialouges
I liked that your LI in DA:O would show some possessiveness (though thankfully never more than was appropriate for their character) and I had the time of my life flirting with Tallis in MotA just to see Isabela get all huffy. Other than the entertainment aspect of it, I like it when the PC is called out on their actions. It seems appropriate that the LIs (strong characters, every one of them) would step up and make their displeasure known when their partner acts a bit too flirty with someone else (or a few someones). I'd like to get that back in DA:I.
I mean really, can you imagine Cassandra just standing by and twiddling her thumbs while you go off and hit on everything with two legs and a pulse?

2. Kissing your LI whenever you wanted to

It was nice to be able to just stop for a second and give your LI a quick peck, particularly after a hard fight or an emotional event. Plus, the comments of your other companions where hilarious.
Now I believe that Gaider has said at some point that this spontaneous kissing would make a return, since it's a popular request and doesn't actually take a lot of resources, though we don't know if that plan has changed by now.
I'm simply gonna keep hoping for it (and maybe a hug option too shh a girl can dream).

Yeah, this kinda irritated me, too. I suppose it could have been the case of just making sure 100% that players wanted their Sheps committed to that particular character rather than changing their minds.
And while on the topic of Mass Effect, I hated how I had to be a douche to Kaidan in ME1 to get him to back off romance-wise. I've experienced more than my fair share of playthroughs where he somehow ended up in Shep's cabin the night before heading to Ilos (much to my surprise), but I don't like how the option to turn him down comes off as a little harsh.

Anywho, back to DA.

Good grief, I missed these, too. I haven't played MotA (I doubt I could stand Felicia Day's voice for very long) so obviously I didn't experience this jealousy, but that's something that I definitely felt was missing in DAII. Granted, I haven't played it in a long while or nearly as much as Origins so the only time I can think of LI jealousy occuring is when Zevran propositions Hawke and their LI is present. And it's always odd in any game when your PC is flirting and offering it on a plate to just about anyone and whoever you're romancing doesn't react. They're either not listening or pretending it isn't happening, I guess.

Oh, and I'm with you. A hug option is long overdue, and I loved giving Tali a hug in ME2 when she really needed one.

Eeeeeeeh! (That was a squee..with my hands... pressed to my cheeks...lol)

I love romances, and I love it when I do something that makes my LI all jealous. I find it really attractive that the one that loves me stands out and keeps me all for himself, with his claws.*Raowr!*

And I want Cullen too. :3
