Also, Cassandra better be a LI for female inquisitor or so help me...

If she isn't, I propose we grap out torches and pitchforks and head over to Bioware headquarters.

...or we just curl up into a corner and eat ice cream. Same difference.

Then, give us someone else than Varric, since it seems to be too complicated. XD

Varric as dwarf-sexual, but able to be romanced by other races?

Man, that would lead to riots. And I'd love it.

I don't think that would lead to riots. Just people disappointed by Bioware's writting skills and bad fanservice.

To be fair, 'disappointed' pretty much translates into riots here on the BSN.

Fair enough.

But at the same time, Varric is very popular. I think many people are willing to forget this inconvenient detail about him if he is going to be romancable. And only a few folks will maybe complain, but nothing compared to those who would be happy.

I think I would be in the minority, but I wouldn't say anything, because I don't really care either way even if I have my preferences.

Is that consistent with her character?

She seems to have an incestuous love for her dead brother and has only shown (admittedly mild) interest in one person - a man.

Vivienne seems like the more likely player-sexual female.

The proof, i'd say his dialogue ? I played both male and female pcs. It's easy to aknowledge that he is interested into women and not the guys in DA2.

LOL. Which man? She looks more gay to me. :D
Either way, she better be a LI.

Edit: ever thought that she may be bisexual?

Nope, both Hawkes can flirt with him and he responds well to both.

As far as only being into women, I'm not sure to say it's explicit, but rather it seems to be his preference.

As far as preferring dwarves, I know there's at least one instance of him saying he doesn't "go for humans". Which seems a matter of personal taste, mostly. Not sure whether he thinks the same about elves.

I'm definitely not in the "make every romance option playersexual" camp.

I want my squadmates and those that are romanceable to be written in such a way that benefits them rather than me- their writing is for the sake of them, not for the sake of the player.

I use to mention that I felt an equal number of hetero, ******, etc etc romances would've been cool, but realized later on what a mistake it was to feel that way. Because by feeling that way, I was effectively saying, "make a character have this particular sexuality because it needs to fill a quota".

Thats cheap, from where my perspective lies now. Our sexuality is part of what makes us who we are, and simply switching a character's sexuality to fill a quota or writing a character from the get go with a particular sexuality to fill a quota is doing that character a disservice.

I'm in the process of writing a fanfic, and while I was creating characters, I had to consider their individual sexual preferences, even if it wasn't important and wouldn't be touched on. The reason I did this was because I felt I needed to create characters that could only ever be what they are, rather than change to better fit a situation or be a certain way to have a certain number. So if I wrote a character as say, pansexual, they could only ever be that, and writing them any differently would make them not who they really are/who they're supposed to be.

I found that I was still able to write characters with various different sexualities, without consciously numbering how many of certain types there were.

The difference between a story being read and a game being played though is quite big. A game is much more of a visual medium, and something you can argue is more engaging(depending on the person). I can understand the difference there, and the inherent desire many have to be able to romance whomever they please out of the options made available to them.

But personally, I'd rather each romanceable character have their sexuality be an ingrained part of their nature and character. Naturally, that would mean not every choice would be available to everyone.

One character could for example, as people have mentioned before, only be attracted to female dwarven characters.

Or perhaps another doesn't care what race or gender someone is, but instead values other parts of what and whom a person is, such as their personality and actions.

Perhaps another is only interested in a male of any race who shares similar feelings as their own, for example sympathizing with the templars.

I feel like a character has more depth and uniqueness if they're written for the sake of themselves, rather than the player. Hopefully that makes some sense to those of you reading this.

Anyway, thats just my opinion. Of course some others would agree, some would disagree, some have their own feelings on the specifics. I'd like to hear...err, read how others feel about how romances are written in these games and what they'd particularly prefer out of them.

Because even if we don't get exactly what we want, and lets be honest, the vast majority of us won't get exactly what we want down to every little detail, its nice to find out how others feel and get their opinions.

If I didn't accept other's opinions, I wouldn't of done the reconsideration of my earlier opinion and changed my tune. :)

Edit:
^If this ever happened then we us, gays, we'd have only 1-2 romance options whereas the straights will get more romances. No thanks. I don't want it to be Mass Effect.

*If* he ends up an LI he'll most likely be a potential LI for either gender, as Gaider believes the DA2 approach to romances is the best route to go, where every romanceable character is available to a PC of any gender.

I personally disagree and think Mass Effect 3 handled it better, with characters having defined sexual interests that the player couldn't override. Some characters were only into the opposite sex, some only into the same sex, and some were into both. You know, just like real life.

But I know many people would disagree with me and agree with Gaider, so I'm not going to pretend I speak for a majority. On that I think the fanbase is divided.

Varric talks to you about your LI. If you pick "Are you jealous?" it's so close to flirting.

Hawke:"Well, well, well, I never thought you were the type Varric. I'm flattered."

Varric:"Hawke, I know I'm damn near irresistible, but you're just too high maintenance for me, sorry."

Only case I could truly say that was with Fenris.

I won't get into a discussion about it, but I'll say that the general idea is that a relationship without conflict gets boring fast.

There's a difference between "a relationship that has conflict" and a relationship in which one partner is completely caught up in themselves to the exclusion of everything else - and yeah, that's both Fenris and Anders in DA2. I enjoy Fenris' romance but frankly it'd be a relief to have an LI who actually takes an interest in my PC once in a while this time around... Maybe asks how they're doing? Once? In seven years? And/or is slightly less emotionally scarred?

The romances in DAO I found much more well-rounded than those in DA2, overall.

Equally she hasn't expressed a disinterest in women to my knowledge, so i can't see any reason why she should be considered hetro only.

We're debating the sexuality of a fictional character.

There are no winners.

Now that is simply not true.
In my life, I have expressed (real life) interest only in women. Most people assume I'm a lesbian and I'm fine with that because I simply can't be bothered to explain to every single one that I do feel attracted to certain men - it simply doesn't happen as frequently as me being attracted to a woman.

Sexuality is...always a touchy subject. I think it's hard to make a definite statement because sexuality is such a individual and often fluid thing.
