I'm just hoping we get some fresh character traits in the LI department.

As of now, I see Sera as little more than a rogue version of Merrill.

The writers might have changed her alot since the leaked marketing survey. We don't know yet.

She does seen oblvious to what she's doing at times, almost like a child who thinks playing in dangerous areas is alright. To be honest I like Merrill's child-like innocence since she's the one character who tries to remain positive.

Dalish-to-****hole culture shock, and it's really only present in Act 1.

And she still tries to look at the happier side of things even if she gets treated like crap, that's why Merrill is one of my favorite characters.

I don't know all of the names, but I hope Cullen and Varric aren't love interests (especially if Varric vowed to never love again). Cullen I feel even if they mix his personality from DAO and DA2 I am afraid he would turn out like Anders, but on the other side. I know I could've compared him to Fenris, but I feel Anders was way more prejudiced and preachy.  Personally I would love a big strapping male Qunari of any class to be romanceable , i think he would be a bi option because if he was of the Qun this would be his first real foray into love. Females any is ok with me because I doubt I would ever romance them, other than maybe getting a trophy/achievement, I like playing characters that are gay, like me. What I know of Cassandra I think she would make a good bi/lez romance option because she does have a masculine air about her but not too masculine, kind of like a step down from Aveline.

If we were going for superficial comparisons, Sera sounds more like a cross between Fenris and Isabela. Fenris is my favorite DA character and I like Isabela, so cool. But she actually seems more like her own person. Sera and Dorian are the only ones that really take my interest as far as potential LIs go. Although I can never really say what my character is going to do; I've gone into too many games thinking I have it all planned out, then it goes somewhere else, haha.

Your depersonalization of Merrill is disturbing.

Merrill is child-like

Merrill may be child-like ..  however that doesn't always depict someone's maturity. We are talking about a person who hasn't dealt with humans or lived in their world..
Clan life is different from how humans live. You even see the difference in how the city elves are compared to how Merrill acts.
As the story progressed we see some change in Merrill but its not enough to notice if we don't listen to the banter between her and Varric or her and Fenris and towards the end with her and Anders or Aveline.

Then there is the fact that she new the price for dealing with the demon was hers to pay and what the Keeper did was wrong even if it was out of love.
Merrill even tells you that she's ready to have you strike her dead if it came to that.

Just wanted to throw that out there.

Other than the words 'young' and 'elf' I really don't see any similarity between what little we might know about Sera, and Merrill. A brat is a young person who is ill-mannered or impolite. Merrill might be young, but she never came across as bratty. Sera also 'revels in the athleticism of being an elf, of being different.' The culture of the undercity that she comes from also places a high value on friends. All of that differs from Merrill who was a bit of a loner, and at times shy and awkward. In contrast Sera sounds confident (cocky?) and gregarious.

Normally it seems that the first companions to be shown to us have been confirmed to be love interests.  I can only use Dragon Age II as an example as that's the only one I remember.  Isabela was the first companion to be shown and she was then confirmed to be a love interest.  I wonder if Cassandra, Varric, or Vivienne are love interests?  (I wouldn't mind romancing Varric!)

Given what happened with Aveline (who was the second character to be revealed for Dragon Age 2), and likewise the complete lack of any romance with Varric I think it's kind of foolhardy/getting up false hopes to assume anything about any of the characters that have been shown thus far.

It seems that the writing team is starting to enjoy dangling that carrot only to pull it away. And even Gaider has gone on, ad nauseum, that 'characters aren't written to just be roamances...' ( paraphrasing) and has seemed even more ardant with that viewpoint for Inqusition. From where I'm standing I wouldn't put a confident bet on any of the characters. Getting another taste of the Aveline giant middle finger would really leave just too terrible a taste in the mouth.

Vivienne is probably in her 50s, Varric has Bianca and Cassandra is a safe bet

That wouldn't stop Zevran, why should it stop us?

Jokes aside, I think it would be cool to have a more mature woman as an LI, the little pieces we got with Samara (who was somewhere in the Asari equivalent of her 50's) hinted at what could have been a very interesting romance, I'd llove to see something more fully realized with Vivienne.

Also I wonder if we'll actually have more companions as LI's than just 4 this time, but only because certain companions will be closed off to you due to things other than gender. Like Varric will be an option, but only for dwarfs, or Vivienne won't romance you unless you're also a mage sort of thing.

Merill might be child like, but she was also sort of a psychopath in a lot of ways. Made it hard for me to like her, lol.

I don't want Bioware to focus on LIs and nothing else, but I do hope they're a little more well-rounded this time around. As much as the past two games' romance options were great (besides Zevran, I despised that little varlet), they felt limited or constricted. If all Bioware leaves us with is Cassandra, a semi-psychotic Seeker, Vivienne, an elderly mage, Cullen, no-personality-yet-fangirl-favorite Templar, and Varric, who shouldn't be romanceable to begin with, the romance department will be a little bit disappointing.

I don't want to argue about Cullen in this thread but apparently he's being re-worked. Well he ought to be, after all he had to go through the fall of 2 Circles with abominations running free and his comrade dying so he probably won't be the same anymore. But if anyone is interested in getting to undesrtand Cullen more, not in the romantic way, you should see this http://houseofgriffi...oggable-by-this she explains things better than I ever will

I would count out Cassandra also. I don't think she would be a romance. I say this because if you watched the movie she was a little sweet on that mage guy. It shows a little in the end that she likes him. So much time had passed that who know what happened but I think that mage guy is a new driving force for Cassandra.

The anime takes place decades before DA:I takes place. It is entirely possible for people to have ex's and past lovers and still be romanceable.

I personally liked Aveline "giant middle finger". It was awesome that one character wasn't goin to get into your pants regardless of how you tried.

I didn't see the anime, but in the wikia of the anime they named the event of Kirkwall, and SPOILER

The Divine gave Cassandra the book about Hakwe and his companions that she had in DA2.

Here's to hoping that Cassandra is indeed a LI. Been interested in her ever since the first scene of DA2, and I would hate to miss out of getting to know her better, especially in a LI capacity. She'd be the first Dragon Age female LI that is actually nobility (and royalty) and a warrior, which I find very refreshing.

I also hope that Cullen is a companion and a LI if I ever decide to make a female Inquisitor. I just found him to be a compelling and complex character. Well, here's to hoping.

And we are proving that it is not right.

I joined late to DAII news, so Isabela was the first companion to me.  I'm just saying a theory I had (which proves to be wrong now), but it isn't a bad idea to think of the confirmed companions as love interests already.

I'd say it is a bad idea, but that's for entirely different reasons than what people here are discussing.

I'm pretty solid in my ideas of who the romances will be.

Cullen
Dorian
Cassandra
Sera

I think this seems likely to me as well.

Cassandra just seems pretty obvious to me.  She's popular with fans and would be a new take on a femLI.  We've never had a strong female warrior as an LI in Dragon Age yet.

Sera (which is what I'll continue to call the female elf until I hear something otherwise) seems more in line with the typical DA femLI.  She's an elf (DA has always had at least one elf LI) and sounds like she's going to be more "girl-like" (similar to Leliana and Merrill, somewhat naive and less worldly; vs. Morrigan and Isabella, who were more womanly and experienced).  I expect she'll be an LI.

Cullen hasn't been announced yet, but I also expect him as a companion and LI.  Bioware listens to fans and, whether you like him or not, you can't deny that he has an enormous following for a tertiary character.  Plus, he harkens back to the Alistair/Fenris style maleLI:  strong warrior who has an exterior that covers his sensitve nature.

I know that we haven't really gotten much information about Dorian (which is what I'll continue the male mage that looks like an elf in the concept art) yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's the other maleLI.  Again, Bioware loves an elf (there's been a male elf LI in both prior games).  Plus, his back story would be an interesting one to explore in a deeper way.

Of course, this is all speculation because the only three companions we know for sure are Cassandra, Varric, and Vivienne.

Bioware never confirmed that Cullen is going to be a companion. But, if they do actually put him as a companion, I could only assume he'd be romanceable.

I imagine the writers pit wouldn't need to be paid for months if they decided against making Cullen an LI though. Can you imagine all the fan tears? =)

I never really understood this fascination people had with Cullen. Guess I was too caught in the moment to properly enjoy lots of his dialogue (totally my fault and not the writers'). That post was great!

Cullen has a new fangirl as of today! :wizard:
