Yeah, and during the pax demo, they were described as "long term enemies" so I believe it.

POSSIBLY SPOILERS
Some leaks have surfaced that date back to February and, despite this, use the name "Red Templars" which lends them crediblity.
According to these leaks, Red Templars will serve as the main enemy for most of the game and the person controlling them will be trying to reach the Black City. So, their goals don't even seem to be related to mages that much which means that making them Templars serves little purpose beyond alienating their supporters.
My only hope now is that they use the name "Red" in order to differentiate between them and the real Templars.
That was bound to happen once the templars broke away from their supplier, druggies looking for a fix are unpredictable and dangerous.Splinter Cell 108 wrote...
Sounds troubling, I hope there's more to the Red Templars than just a bunch of drugged up maniacs.

Maybe the final choice is to either step into the Black City or leave it alone. If you step through, something worse than the Darkspawn happens and you have thus lead the world to its bitter end.Wasn't Gaider rather adamant that the existence or nonexistence of the Maker and other gods in the setting would remain ambiguous?

First, there is no alternative to using lyrium because any efficient anti-mage police force requires the ability to dispell magic. And no, allowing mages to police themselves is no solution because this police force actually needs to be invested in keeping normals safe.
Second, the idea that the Templars would have decided to break from the Chantry without first securing either reserves or a source of lyrium is ridiculous.
Third, it is inconceivable that all templars would have run out of lyrium and exhibithed withdrawal simptoms at the exact same time. Meaning, that even if someTemplars would be lead to using Red Lyrium out of desperation, the effects would be known soon enough and the leadership would avoid it like mages avoid demons.
Fourth, any army built on the basis of "We got lyrium" would last one generation and that is it. What enabled the Templars to exist for centuries was the belief in protecting people from mages.Maybe the final choice is to either step into the Black City or leave it alone. Whether the Maker exist will remain ambiguous. What won't be ambiguous is that stepping into the city at the center of the Fade is a terrible idea.
So you believe mages don't care about non-mages?That's a pretty cynical way to think and I'm a cynic myself.MisterJB wrote...

Actually, they are from February and May which apparead today, as a screenshot of the supposed 'leak', with no direct link to the site where they were posted.
They care about as much as normals cared about mage freedom for 900 years; or about how much the mages cared about the lives of normals before rebelling against the Chantry; or about as much as humans care about elves; or about as much as dwarves care about Casteless; or about as much as the rest of the world cares about the darkspawn in the Deep Roads or the slaves in Tevinter.cjones91 wrote...

Damn...and here I thought I had a cynical outlook towards people and the world.Mages have family and friends who are non mages and you think they want to see them get hurt? How many mages ended being killed because they wanted to see their families?MisterJB wrote...

Social groups don't give a hoot about each other. They interact only as much as necessary in order to get what they want and they all think the world would be much better if only them existed.
Hence why we need non-mage Templars in order to police mages to ensure they don't harm non-mages.

Well the problem with Mages is that just by using their powers they invite demons... There is no such thing as a safe mage. People like Malcolm Hawke are the exception - far from the rule.

What if the Red Templars is the Templard Order from Tevinter and is being used by the Magisters and the Black Divine?
That...would fix almost everything, actually.

They might care for their familes but that doesn't change the fact there is a different cultural identity between mages and normals that separate them at birth and is for life.Mages have family and friends who are non mages and you think they want to see them get hurt? How many mages ended being killed because they wanted to see their families?
They were possessed. The mages in Rivain are one example of when templars overstep their bounds and are too heartless towards mages.
We know that in Tevinter, the Templar Order only has the power the mages allow them to have, the Magisters wouldn't think twice about force feeding them Red Lyrium and setting them loose on the South; those fans who support the Templar Order wouldn't feel abandoned by Bioware and the Red Templars would be no more insane mooks than the Nilfgaardian soldiers from The Witcher 2 are or Loghain's troops in DAO were.AresKeith wrote...

So far we don't really know anything about them except for the leak, them using Red Lyrium, being "long term enemies", and some turning into Rock Wraiths
But there's only a few instances that would make me ok with them
But the Rivaini mages were harming no one and did'nt go on killing rampages, the only they were killed was because some Seeker did'nt like them seeing their family members and snitched to the Chantry.MisterJB wrote...

Ander's parents were non-mages but that doesn't change the fact by Act 3 in DA2 he, by his own admission, would have killed every single normal in Kirkwall to see the mages free. They were possessed. The mages in Rivain are one example of when templars overstep their bounds and are too heartless towards mages.
According to World of Thedas, the Seers rule Rivain's communities. "Magic must serve man and never rule over him."cjones91 wrote...
