So I am an Infiltrator, just completed ME, and got to the lvl 50 cap on Normal difficulty.
Got to lvl 50 in Ilos, then after that, I just ran thought it, not really caring about the exp still gained that goes toward my next playthrough..!!- so I probably would be 51, or 52 now...!
Anyways, should I play this on a harder difficulty?- Hardened or Insanity??- on harder difficulties, it gives more enemies-for more exp and stuff, but I have never really played this on a higher than Normal, BUT if I can still play and do all the side missions and 2 DLC's and what not that I can find to help max out exp to 60 in this second playthrough, that would be verry fantastic!!
BUT I really don't want to do all of that and be stuck with an extra 30K exp left or something!!...and I dont want it to take 3 or 4 weeks in Insanity!..
So, if anyone can vouch and reccommend a difficulty and exp(without really having to do the glitch..), thanks for the help!!
..or else I will just run though this one, and do all I need in the third playthough-and get ready for ME2 in that one!
and another thing!- I played with Garrus and Wrex ALL the way on this first playthough, and only got the Garrus achievement- not the Wrex, but I only used those two the whole game!
And now I need to do 3 playthoughs(not all complete..) more just to do Kadain, Ashley, Liara, Tali, and Wrex!..
Who should I use for this **hopefully get to 60 playthrough**?!?
especially since the Infiltrator is a bit tricky..!

Like a lot of other people here, I've been replaying Mass Effect to get a character ready for importing into Mass Effect 2. This playthrough was done to make sure I made all the right decisions, killed off the right people, and got to Level 60.
I just wanted to confirm for other people that were wondering, that it IS POSSIBLE to get to Level 60 in your first two playthroughs. To clarify, I'm not talking about getting to level 60 in two playthroughs after you've already finished the game once. As you all know, the first time you play Mass Effect, you're capped to Level 50 -- but everytime after that, if you start a new character, you can exceed Level 50. So getting to level 60 in that situation is pretty easy: you can get to Level 50-55 with your first playthrough, then go from 55-60 in your second playthrough.
What I was scared of was using my FIRST EVER playthrough (capped at Level 50), and knowing if I could get the 10 levels needed to get to Level 60 in my 2nd playthrough. I didn't want to finish my 2nd playthrough at Level 59, and have to play a whole 3rd playthrough just to get to level 60 (and have to do all the sidequests again for importing to ME2).
Here are some notes on what I did:
- In my 2nd playthrough I had the experience bonuses from getting the Power Gamer & Completionist achievements
- I also finished and completed both DLC: Bring Down the Sky and Pinnacle Station
- Completed every single sidequest, every single collection mission, opened every crate, killed every enemy
- Killed 99%+ of all enemies outside of the Mako, as you get a big XP bonus for that
We all know that the XP gap between Level 59 and Level 60 is HUGE -- it's more than half of a whole playthrough just for that one level. I was very scared I wasn't going to get there. However, by the time I left the Citadel for the last time and headed to Ilos, I was at 853,000 / 862,000 -- so I only needed 9,000 XP more at that point.
I ended up actually getting Level 60 just as I opened up the bunker door on Ilos. Yes!!!
Anyways, just wanted to confirm that this was possible on your first two playthroughs (not just any two playthroughs) -- so I hope this helps somebody out there in preparation for Mass Effect 2.
Having just received the Extreme Power Gamer achievement, I can vouch for this strategy. If you have also used the Lorik Qui'nn exploit to access both of the Science Station and Negotiation side missions, you can get it as early as the first half of Virmire (though I can attribute it to killing everyone during the Negotiation, and the Criminal Lords.)

Right before heading to Ilos, my experience was 787,660, of 862,100 to reach level 60. With a gap of 74,440 XP and estimates for Ilos and beyond granting about 50K XP, I knew that level 60 wasn't happening this playthrough.
Upon entering the Citadel relay, I had 809,871 XP, a 22,211 gain. By the very end (exported character XP), it was 842,671. Also, convincing Saren to kill himself yielded 2,035 XP, while killing him (the first time) gave nothing.
It's also worth noting that on my first try, I accidentally ran into a bug which could be exploited for some XP, though it is rather tedious. After going through the exhaust plain on the Citadel, there is a shaft where you first run into Krogan warlords. As long as you are in combat here, a geth trooper is sent into the shaft to fight. What I did is stay far away from the warlord and he got stuck in cover behind part of a wall. We were far enough away that neither my squadmates nor it started firing, but it was enough to stay in 'combat mode' and keep on sending geth. Again, this happened on accident and when I tried to trigger the bug again I've been less than successful. Someone who is better at exploits can probably do this (or already has). Originally, I fought about 30 geth (300-some experience each) before I decided that I should move on.
tl;dr:
Ilos - 22,211 XP
Citadel (Saren Kills Himself) - 32,800 XP
Citadel (Fight Saren) - 30,765 XP
Totals - 55,011 / 52,976 XP
Of course, your experience will vary, but I would say the existing estimate of 50-56K XP is accurate for Ilos and beyond.

Been doing my very first play-through (on 'normal' difficulty), currently at level 45. I have rescued Liara, done Feros and all of the available side-missions on Citadel and off-worlds to this point. I have done all the collection missions. I already have the 'completist' achievement and only half through the main quest. I just arrived on Noveria and about to exit Port Hanshan in the mako.
I still have the rest of Noveria, BDtS, Virmire, Citadel Lockdown, Ilos, and the end to do.
So, what happens when I reach level 50? I know I don't advance levels, but do I still accumulate XP? If so, does this have any impact on the 2nd playthrough?

That's only if you replay with the same exact character. With a new one you start at level 1.

You stop gaining xp, but you get a 10% xp bonus on your next play through. They goal of the first play is to obtain the completionist achievement (5% xp bonus), get to level 50 (10% bonus), unlock the talents you want for the next run, and get the squadmate achievements for your two companions. Then just finish the game.

Also, once you hit, I just run over everything with the Mako, because xp is irrelevant. I don't even bother with gun turrets and thresher maws anymore.

Since then, with the exp bonus you earn in ME2 plus all the DLC, I would wager it's plausible to go from 1-30 in ME2 without importing at all (again, haven't tested, it just seems likely that you make up the 4 extra levels with the bonus and new content).
If that's the case, in theory folks can just do one ME1 playthrough with the choices they want, even *gasp* spend points on charm/intimidate since it doesn't matter if you max them. Even importing at level 35 shouldn't stop you from hitting level 30 in ME2.

what I mean is, on the first playthrough I've always reached 55 and 60 on the second
during it, I do every assignment, survey all of the planets, minerals, & anomalies I can find - even after I'ved collected enough to complete the collection quests, open every crate, downed satelite, etc.
and I reach 55 during the battle run along the Citadel Tower on my way to Saren
on my second playthrough, the only thing I do, besides all of the main missions & assignments, is open every crate & downed satelite (since I don't always get the level 10 of a particular armor I want)
but, I don't do any of the surveying minerals, planets, or anomalies for the collection assignments
and I usually reach 60 right before reaching the Salarian camp on Virmire or, sometimes the battle run on the tower
I do, however, have the Bringing Down the Sky DLC that I play both times
if that makes a difference & I play on the 360 also, if that matters

II J0SePh X II : You don't have to get out of the Mako to kill everything on foot first playthrough. I had a lot of Mako kills and ended up hitting 50 by doing all the subquests. It's the second playthrough in which you have to make all of your kills count. Happy hunting.

If you go back to the beginning, this thread is to do with getting to 60 in your first two playthroughs. That means the first playthrough is capped at level 50 (you don't unlock level 51-60 until beating the game once). And then the second playthrough, leveling from 50-60. Of course it's easy to get to 57-60 in one playthrough, but that's not the topic.
.
well, don't I feel sheepish

I guess that's what happens when I'm posting while my brain is still in sleep mode
sorry, my bad, I completely let the OP's post fly right over my head
um.....nevermind what I originally said then
