As per: http://www.dragonage.com/

"DEEP AND COMPLICATED CHARACTERS Lead a party chosen from nine unique, fully-realized characters – each of whom react to your actions and choices differently, forming complex relationships both with you and with each other."

So... one fewer than ten, then. :)

We may get a DLC character just yet, so don't you worry (previous BW games all had DLC companion: DA:O, DA2, ME2, ME3, so I expect it to be so with DA:I).

So Varric, Cassandra and Viviene confirmed, which leaves us 6 (up to 7) to be yet announced.

Very likely a Qunari and that lithe pony tail mohawk elf chick as well.

We pretty much know the Warden warrior is also an companion. Though, we know nothing of his character. Besides, I'm getting an feeling that the Qunari used in the promos will also be an companion.

Heh, the guy in the multi-region open world picture reminds me of an Assassin from Assassin's Creed.

But the description oozes marketing out of every pore. The only thing I'd recommend taking from it the nine companions.

So we're waiting to hear more about three characters, know of three, leaving 3 completely mysterious for now.
I am liking the way everything looks so far.

Looking at the picture behind Media, we can see the Inquisitor, Vivienne, what looks like could be the older Warden guy, and another white haired male mage who might also be an elf?

I cobbled together:

Warriors:
Cassandra
Qunari (Iron Bull?)
Grey Warden

Rogues:
Varric
Cole (? - survey so dubious)
Sera

Mages:
Vivienne
Dorian (? - survey so dubious)

Then for ninth spot there's the scribe lady and Cullen, either of whom could be a companion or a significant NPC. Hard to tell. Cullen would make four warriors and I feel like they're missing a third mage.

I'm still hoping for a female Qunari.

So that's

Varric, Cassandra and Vivienne

then there are the four from the survey leak who were also on that wall picture

Grey Warden, Dorian, Sera and some unknown human female. Plus Viv was in that picture.

So that leaves two plus whoever the unknown female is. Unless of course any of the survay leak/ wall companions have been change, that is still a possibility.

I have a feeling scribe lady is going to be like Kelly chambers or Traynor in Mass effect and update you on things when in your castle.

What about Leliana? I'm not a fan of hers but she is popular and could come back as a companion.

I really wouldn't put too much stock in the survey leak. I figure that while the overall concept of some characters might remain- like an older warden or an elven archer- that the personalities and names won't necessarily be the same. David (and others) have repeated time and time again that the survey was way old and shouldn't be used to fuel expectations. xD

Ok we have
official

1. Varric /Rouge
2. Cassandra/ Warrior
3. Vivienne/ Mage

Only a matter of time:

4. Grey Warden / Warrior
5. Sera (this dalish girl) / Rogue
6. Qunari/ Tal Vashoth named Iron Bull
7. Cullen / Warrior

Rumor:
8: Leliana / Rogue
9: Magister Dorian Pavus / Mage
10: Cole from Asunder / Rogue

Yes i know that´s one more than 9. But maybe one of them is the Day 1 DLC.

Nine sounds like a perfect number. Especially if they go with three of each class, instead of overloading us with warriors like DAO did.

I'm wondering if the inevitable DLC companion will be someone or something with a unique set of abilities, like Shale? That would avoid throwing the balance off too much, even if the DLC character performed a similar role to one of the base classes. I love Sebastian as a character, but we didn't actually require an extra archer.

Also, do we know for a fact that the Tal'Vashoth dude is a warrior, or are we just assuming that from the fact that he's a giant with horns? Do the Qunari have rogues?

That would make sense but then why was she in that picture on the wall with other companions? I think Lelieanna will be representing the Chantry in some way and so won't be a companion.

Think Leli will be an agent of the Divine. Considering you're not working for her (at least by default), I don't think she'll be a companion.

Basing this on the GI thing.

Another character who may be set to re-enter the Dragon Age ring? The redheaded, religious bard Leliana. “We’ve been building Leliana up to essentially act as an agent to the divine,” Laidlaw says. “I think it would be fair to expect that she might have some say, especially given her appearance at the end of Dragon Age II. But beyond that, mum’s the word.” Leliana has always represented faith and spirituality, often testing belief and being a way to question players about how they feel about the Maker. “As far as I can tell, if you look among our fans, people have a lot of strong opinions on [the Maker],” Gaider says. “It’s a good place to go.”

Here's hoping for a sparring partner who can have Sarcasm fights with master of sarcasm aka Inquisitor.

I like being the hero but I like being a sarcastic git A LOT MORE!

I'd put Sarcastic Hawke's speech about surviving the final battle up against any Commander Shepard speech any day. Hopefully Sarcastic/Funny Inquisitor can measure up.

Yeah, I don't think Leli will be a companion and to be frank, I wouldn't want her to be one. I wonder about the elven chick with black braid. Shee looks like a possible mage? Also the bold elven (?) guy is on the screenshot (and in the concept art), so he might be our Dorian/magister mage?

I just assumed from his mini-bio thing, though granted this was probably written with incomplete information by a PR person and not necessarily the writers:

"The Iron Bull: The Iron Bull is a long way from home, and prefers it that way.
A slap in the face of typically humorless Qunari, he loves drinking,
killing, and looting-not necessarily in that order. The head of a vicious
mercenary company, he’s known for excellent pay and brutal punishment.
It’s been a ten year party, but the Bull may find that old loyalties die
hard."
