9 seems a bit much to me, I hoped for just 6 or 7.

I prefer "less is more" when it comes to companions. Less companions but more dialogue, backstory, personal quests, banter, interjections during conversations, reactions to events...
I felt that ME2 and Awakening had way too many companions for example, you did their quest and then they just stopped talking.

Awakening had 6..........

And it was an expansion and not a full game. You also got one companion really late in the game and didn't get their backstory before the end. I always felt it would have been better if they just had a party of 4 you got early and had a bit more substance.

Yeah but I can see the complaints coming like "Oh, I killed Nathaniel and now I have no rogue" or "I didn't like Velanna's attitude and now I have no mage". They had to have at least 6 per game so you could have 2 per class otherwise you'll always be forced to either have an unbalance team or take characters you don't even like.

It's a tradeoff sure. Still, some people could dislike Anders and Velanna and you'd have the same situation.

What I'd like to see them try someday (in a minor expansion or something) is having a fixed party of companions that you have but then they would comment on EVERYTHING, have threeway conversations and be much more involved in the plot. Image IPB 3 companions talking with each other almost never happens now when you can have any combination of partymembers.

I liked Anders in Awakening.
9 isn't enough.
They need 10 at least.

3 of each class. :) They always skimp out on the mages. Alternatively, I wouldn't mind a non-human character like a golem, a sylvan or a werewolf.

I think one of the biggest weaknesses of ME2 was the over-stuffed roster of squadmates. Outside of their recruitment and loyalty missions, most of the inflated cast just stayed in their quarters on the Normandy. I never felt connected to them and that took something out of the game for me. I'd hate to see that happen again. Once you get more than 2 in any given class, I find that at least one of them gets relegated to the sidelines again.

I know that people complain about only having 1 companion per specialization because it means that you are stuck with them if you need it for combat, but that doesn't bother me. I kind of like the idea that you don't have to like all of your allies in the game, but you still need to work with them. So even though I hated Velanna, I needed to use her if I wanted an offensive spec'd mage.

I'm happy that they are saying 9 at this point because if the cast gets any larger, there are going to be some people who don't ever leave our camp/headquarters.

Nine sounds like a perfect number. Especially if they go with three of each class, instead of overloading us with warriors like DAO did.

This might be hilarious.  All Warrior Playthrough FTW!

I find 9 to be a bit… too much? Unless gameplay is long enough to give us time to get to know each character well. I mean, I understand that party has to be balanced out for every mage to have a warrior, and for every warrior to have a rogue. But why bother having 9+ members if you only really care for, lets say, 3 of them? I am not saying it will be necessarily bad with DA:I, but being cautious with adding more folks to the party.

9 seems like a fair number to me. Not too few so that you're robbed of choice as to who to bring, but not overstuffed like ME2 so that you never bring some people. It's even better if they do go the 3x3 format like we suspect.

Who I think we'll get:

Warriors:
Cassandra (Human Female TH)
Grey Warden (Human Male S&S)
Unknown Warrior

Rogues:
Varric (Dwarf Male Archer)
Sera (Elven Female DW)
Iron Bull (Tal'Vasoth Male ???)

Mages:
Vivenne (Human Female Damager)
Dorian (Human or Elven Male Healer)
Unknown Mage

I'd like to see a Tal'vasoth female, but with Iron Bull looking to end up on the team I kinda doubt that'll happen. Cole I could see either way; on the one hand he'd be ridiculously overpowered, on the other there's so much potential in his story. Cullen, Leliana, and Painter Girl are all people I see being agents or fulfilling a Travers-esque role.

I'm betting we'll get a 10th companion as DLC and I would bet on it being a mage since the roster seems to be warrior-heavy.

Confirmed/Possible Warriors-
Cassandra
Grey Warden
Cullen
Iron Bull

That's 4 warriors out of nine companions. That would lead to one class only getting 2 companions. With Varric, Sera and possibly Cole taking up 3 slots that would leave just 2 slots for mages. We've got Vivienne for sure, Dorius in the leak and the male elven mage in numerous pieces of concept art. Varric and Sera both look to be archers so I doubt Cole, a dagger user, would be relegated to DLC.

I would imagine we would have 3 of each class, and that's kind of what I hope. I mean, the day one DLC companion is what I want to find out. Personally, I hope it's a strange class to add something different to the game, rather than just another rouge or mage or warrior.

We don't know for sure they're party members yet ?

Bioware will probably only give us two mage companions in an effort to prevent the all mage party.

People keep saying this. Usually the same few, over and over. Why? It's no more unbalanced than an all-warrior party.

People raged when they believed that they were forced to take companions they disliked because those companions were the only ones who possessed a skill tree they needed. I doubt they'd do it that way again.

The only officially announced companions are Cassandra, Varric and Vivienne. The rest are all guesses based on concept arts and the leaked survey.

BioWare also said that we probably wouldn't get new companion information until next year...

It is a trend in Bioware games. Two mage companions, plus the mage PC. In DA2, you had three potential mage companions, but only if your PC wasn't a mage and even then it wasn't for the entire game.

Though we did see two companions in the GI videos who resembled the Grey Warden and Sera.

Does two games qualify as a trend?

Or does Awakening make it three?

I agree, it was just too many of them and some you got really late like Legion and didn't get to use much at all.

But I do wonder if its 9 full companions waiting in your camp for the majority of the game or if some of the 9 are like dog (not much dialogue and no personal quests) and Bethany/Carver (you can have one or the other and they're not around for most of the game) or Loghain (there for the end).

I guess I'll have to look at those videos.
I presume Sera is from the books or comics.
I don't read those so a little background would be appreciated.

A trend of 1 game?

BG2 had 5 "mages," more than any other class: Aerie, Imoen, Nalia, Edwin, and Jan.

Sera doesn't really feel like a guess to me at this point due to all of the (circumstantial) evidence.  Despite the fact that we don't know how to identify Dorian in concept art, the survey still makes decent case for him being a follower.  Cullen will most likely be in the game, but from what I can tell there's no real cause to believe he'll be a companion.

To be honest, I'm actually still on the fence about Iron Bull.  I have no basis for this, but I feel like his role might not be that of a companion anymore.  He's in all of this promotional material, but they haven't said a word about him officially.  That makes it at least as likely for him to be an important NPC as it for him to be a follower.  That's my take on him right now.  Also, why do people think he's going to be a rogue?  He's got a huge Arishok-style sword!

Then there's this trident guy with the moustache.  Who knows what he'll turn out to be.  Same with Scribe Girl, though the prevailing theory (which I agree with) is that she'll be a Joker/Traynor/Kelly Chambers-style companion.

Probably way more detail than you wanted, but I just wanted to get my thoughts out there.

It also had alignment restrictions that made it fairly difficult to use all five mages at once. Plus, Imoen wasn't available for a chunk of the game.

9 is many, but I hope it is for the sake of giving us 3 companions off each class and they don't warrior overload us again like in origins. (I had no idea what to do with all those warriors in origins).

Some companions that are mutallity exclusive would also be nice.
