I've got this really insane idea:

Why don't we wait until all nine companions are revealed and we see some examples of their interaction before we bemoan how shallow and/or boring they will be.

Madness!

Seriously though, I'm expecting that not all 9 will be fleshed out perfectly.

That is entirely possible.

But if so, I don't think it would be strictly "because nine"

We're left with:
Alistair
Morrigan
Leliana
Sten
Oghren
Wynne
Zevran

Okay, let recap DA:O

Alistair - can die
Morrigan - has plot armour! :o
Leliana - can die (even though lives again in DA2)
Sten - can die (techincally speaking so if you leave him otherwise it's deus ex machina)
Oghren- can die
Zevran - can die

Unless Bioware are willing to retcon and ever willing to demean meaningful choices, your list is looking short.

On BSN? That is insane.

I'm all for being reasonable while awaiting more information.

The number won't be a decisive factor, but will certainly contribute imo. If the characters are like in DA2; all a bunch of whiners, useless, cranky or plainly idiotical brats, then even if there's only 3 companions they will suck.

It is possible to have a lot of characters and many of them being cool... Mass Effect 2 was proof of that, a good management of the characters' subplots and entertaining backgrounds for them made the number of companions irrelevant. out of 12 companions + Joker, almost everyone was cool, except for Jacob and Kasumi... Still 11 out of 13, that's good.

Yet a lot of companions create a situation when you just don't know wich one select for the missions. In DA2 sometimes I prefered to go alone with my high-defense rogue than undertaking the annoying task of selecting the least 3 worse companions.... I never came to use some of them like that ****** of Sebastian and the annoying bastard of Carver.

A lot of people say they didn't like the way ME2 handled its characters.
shrugs.
Whether they will include all the ones predicted as possibles or we get surprised might determined how fleshed out they are.
Characters from the books and comics would already have a backstory even if people who hadn't read the books and comics were unfamiliar with them.

So the only new thing that I can gather from today's new is that Cassandra is confirmed as sword and shield now. See the video:

http://m.youtube.com...player_embedded

Gameplay footage of her at 1:10 and a cinematic shot of her with Varric, Vivienne, and the Inquisitor at 1:36.

Doesn't mean she's sword & shield. She isn't using one in the previous screenshots we have of her, maybe she just doesn't have a forced warrior spec like all the companions had in DA2 and we are back to DAO companion (well except for Varric I guess).

I am actually kind of hoping that it means exactly that.  All of the new stuff shows her as sword and shield and I definitely remember seeing her as two handed in the past.  Hopefully we can spec them as we wish again.

The companion's weapon is interchangeable.

In this picture, we can see Cassandra fighting with a 2-handed sword. It would make more sense to do it this way due to the complain in the last game regarding the lack of companion's customization.

Unless Bioware are willing to retcon and ever willing to demean meaningful choices, your list is looking short.

Mass Effect 3 had:

Ashley - can die in ME1
Kaidan - can die in ME1
Garrus - can die in ME2
Tali - can die in ME2

Dragon Age: Inquisition seems to have a Mass Effect-level budget now, so they could include optional party members.

Early on in the marketing for DA2, there was a screenshot of Isabela with a short bow. So don't take random screenshots as gospel for the finalized combat utility of companions - they can be staged. That said, I really hope that characters can swap between weapon styles within their class. I'd like to be able to choose whether Cass is a sword and board or a two hander, or for a rogue to be an archer or a dual wielder.

Thinking of that though, I wonder how that might work for Varric? I imagine if you asked him to put Bianca away and swap to daggers, he'd probably slap you.

Wynne can die too. Either at the circle if you decide to just murder everyone or at Sacred Ashes if you defile them.

Mike Laidlaw said that companions are not locked into their weapon style.

Here is what I'm seeing for companions.

Cassandra , warrior, confirmed
Vivienne, Mage, confirmed
Varric, rogue, confirmed

Old man Grey Warden, warrior, seen in gameplay video
Blonde elf (Sera?), rogue, seen in gameplay video (according to others)
Cole, rogue, most likely hinted companion from Asunder

???
???
???

Its not certain that Sten dies. Just because the Warden doesn`t let him out of the cage, it doesn`t mean anyone else won`t let him out before\\when the darkspawn arrives at Lothering.

It's generally assumed the darkspawn kill sten.
The rumor is that Cole is a likely party member .
Not in favor of that.

I know there was the survey leak that mentioned him...

But there was also a rumor that someone at PAX mentioned that we would be getting a party member from the Asunder novel. I think everyone is just assuming it's one of the big three.

*In order of my personal guesses*

Cole
Rhys
Evangaline

...
Maybe Adrian or Fiona, but I doubt it since we already have Vivienne.

Fiona is the Grand Enchanter so I don't see her hanging out with you especially if you side with templars at any point.
Adrian would be passable but she see's the world in black and white and I bet she would go crazy if you talk about mages in a negative light even once.
Rhys is a circle mage but I think will Vivienne already fills that role well enough.
If Evanagaline gets in, we can count Cullen out because they both would fill the templar role.

For me, Cole seems the only realistic choice.

He's a murderous blood mage, people say.
I would refuse him as a party member unless he's changed.

I'm still guessing like this: Cassandra, Iron Bull, Cullen and Grey Warden (warriors)
Varric and Sera for rogues and Vivienne as the mage. But I'm going to go out on a limb and speculate that Dorian is going to be Rhys (mage from asunder who is also from Orlais/Tevinter and a spirit healer). But that's only 8. I don't know who to guess as the 9th one. Probably another rogue?
