Just speculation.
Cause speculating is fun.

I suppose some or the characters could have been replaced or merged with other characters.

Pretty sure that most of those characters have "changed significantly" and/or have been axed completely.
I think people still expecting all of those characters will be disappointed.

The media concept art has several characters in it.

1.) Inquisitor
2.) Vivienne
3.) Grey Warden guy, perhaps?
4.) Mystery person with a....staff?

It would make sense to have three from each class. Maybe if there are two specialtizations, one from each with a third who can be built to accommodate either? One of the most frequently voiced complaints about DA2 was that if you didn't like a particular companion, you were out that particular skillset.

There are only 3 confirmed companions so far:

1) Casandra
2) Varric
3) Vivienne

Anyone else is just speculation.

Which made me wonder before, since they already have three warriors (Cassandra, Iron Bull, Grey Warden) and if Cullen was to be a companion that'd be four.

There's also only two mages (even if we count Dorian, who hasn't been sighted or talked about officially in *anything*, and could've been cut months ago).

If they have changed plans significantly since the survey, then quite a few companions could still be under wraps waiting to be revealed.

I have the impression that the elf-dwarf ratio will be the same as DA2. Two elves (the female elf assassin and the male elf seen in the concept art in the second GI video) and one dwarf.
I'd be glad to be wrong though. I'd like to have a female dwarf again.

I have the feeling that he is still a companion. It makes no sense for me to cut an Tevinter magister. Serious this guy is unique as companion. Vivienne on the other hand sounds for me like the orlaisian version of Wynne.

We have also no other clue for Cole.

Yeah, I think it would be cool if Dagna (from Origins) was a companion. I know dwarves aren't supposed to possess magic abilities, but maybe she found a way--I mean, she was supposed to be really smart. A dwarf mage would be badass.

Since Vivienne seems to be your damage mage companion, there is probably going to be another mage companion whose initial abilities are more focused on healing. (DA:I's Wynne)

Then
for ninth spot there's the scribe lady and Cullen, either of whom could
be a companion or a significant NPC. Hard to tell. Cullen would make
four warriors and I feel like they're missing a third mage.

So the Qunari IS a companion! Good! I hope he is just a Kossith, not Tal Vashoth or Qunari. Maybe he can be from a foreign land outside of Thedas? 

I suspect there is going to be a third mage companion. Who? I have no idea.

Nah dude, you had four including Shale. Oghren, Sten, Alistair, and Shale. Unless I got a glitched copy of Origins and I'm missing somebody...

Yeah, but Sera was blond last year and those pics are more recent.

I realize they might have to canonize a player choice from DA2, but I would really love to have Feynriel as a companion. Or Connor.

But they probably won't go back on their possible deaths/tranquilization. Wait! Unless they cured the tranquil Feynriel.

As much as David said not to get attached to the survey characters because they could (and probably have) changed a lot, or even been cut, since then...

Dorian was the one that really stood out as an interesting character. I mean, literary references! A magister! peacocks!

I hope one of the characters is a barbarian this time around. We've yet to have one on the squad, and they'd have a different perspective than your typical civilized human warriors or dwarves.

This is what I want too.

Well, we have 4 possible humans (Cassandra, Vivienne, Grey Warden, Cullen?), 1 dwarf (Varric) 2 elves (Sera, Male Elf fist on chin guy?) 
so that leaves a possible Dwarf and Qunari as two more companions. So that's a decent diversity.
