It's been said that the companions are supposed to personify different situations happening in the world. So this is my take on the potential cast:

Cassandra: Seeker, invested in the inquisition, (indirect) victim of mages, Navarran
Cullen: Non-corrupt templar, victim of mages, Ferelden
Cole: Templar victim, spirit connection, blood mage
Vivienne: Circle mage, Grand Enchanter, possibly politically savvy
Dorian: Tevinter mage, possibly a very adept spirit healer, outcast, wants to cure tevinter corruption
Iron Bull: Merc, qunari insight
Grey Warden: gray warden connection (obviously), mentor
Sera: City elf, undercity savvy, comedic relief (vulgar)
Varric: Surface dwarf, neutral, Hawke connection

It seems like we're missing an Orlesian connection, unless we can get that through Vivienne, Grey Warden, or Sera. Fabulous Mustachio could be it, but aside from some concept art, we have no idea who or even what class he is.

So, are most people opposed to a female majority then?

I keep seeing lists with 6 males and 3 females.

It's a freakin' sausage fest. :(

Why don´t the devs just tell us and end this misery?

Vivienne cames from the circle from Orlais.

Agree that an elf couldn't be a magister ?
Could it be a woman.
Are there any female magisters mentioned in the books or comics ?
A darkspawn cannot be a companion .
The taint would sicken the other party members.
Since people apparently don't like blood mages they wouldn't like a darkspawn companion either.

Based on her voice, she wasn't raised in Orlais though.

It might have been a temporary voice, but she doesn't seem natively Orlesian to me.

I think your good one some points but i tend to think that Iron Bull is unlikely to be dlc. At least if the Qunari we've seen in the trailers and concept arts is indeed Iron Bull. By the way, i read somewhere (but lost the source) that the devs said that the Qunari we saw in the trailer is somehow connected with the dragon of the first trailer. So i haighly doubt that this Qunari being a dlc. In fact, i even highly doubt that this Qunari is even a compagnion. Or a "hidden" compagnion flagged as main antagonist in the game like Loghain was.

So i'd go into something like :

Warriors:
1. Cassandra (confirmed)
2. Grey Warden (quite confirmed too, just no name linked)
3. a. Cullen
    b. Iron Bull (but not being the one whe've seen)
    c. someone else

Rogues:
1. Varric (confirmed)
2. Elf girl / Sera
3. a. Hooded guy in black (seen in the survey)
    b. Lelianna
    c. Cole
    d. Qunari male / female ?

Mages:
1. Vivienne (confirmed)
2. Dorian / Human guy in white with mustache
3. Bald Elf

That would be my take. The scribe girl would likely be more a mage than a rogue or warrior and there's already enough potential mages. So she's probably more of a personnal assistant for the Inquisitor than a fighting compagnion.

And for a dlc compagnion well... A dog ? :o

The reason I think Cullen will be a companion is because there needs to be someone who represents the templars, Cassandra I think will represent the chantry hopefully because I don't want the pro-templar and pro-chantry character to be one and the same.

The hooded guy in black represented the Inquisitor, remember there was a female equivalent in the leaked survey. Leliana I believe will be a major NPC, and besides we already have a pro-chantry character in Cassandra.
Cole I think has been droped as a companion because we have not seen any concept art of him at all and he was only mentioned in the leaked survey. As for the Qunari rouge all my guesses were based on concept art, the leaked summary and the GI video so your guess is as good as mine.;)

Please that´s not really an argument for game designer. ^_^
Give the party or the darkspawn a special ring, spell, potion or whatever.
Or maybe this a special one who isn´t that tainted. Perhaps the latest creation of the Architect or
another intelligent Darkspawn.

Ok i must asked this. Why have only few a DAO companion in their list?
I think its really necessary to have at least one in the party.
Not for meespecially  because i am still a Fan of DA franchise. But for average gamer who was disappointed
by DA 2 therefore must be Origins companion as mousetrap.
Leliana as returning companion is a strong selling argument.

Because DAO is over and those characters had their adventure.

Old characters with nowhere to grow aren't interesting companions. Leliana, for instance, already had the challenge against her character, in trying to figure out if she could be a pious sister or wanted to accept the continuing call to excitement and adventure. And for those who convinced her that she needn't be a Bard, she apparently promptly ignored them. I'm not too excited about retreading that ground.

Mine has 5:4 aswell and am not opposed to a 5:4 female to Male ratio I just don't think they will do it, also I have reasons for picking some of them.

Vivienne isn't the kind of party member you pick up in a tavern; she's a woman of status and influence and represents the kind of caliber of companion the Inquisitor generally attracts.

High ranking Mages, soldiers, and socially significant individuals contribute to their talents to your cause especially if it looks like you will be the only group left standing when the dust settles, who they are where their localities lie bioware doesn't want to give out yet . Game infomer

Cassandra Leader of the Seekers
Varic is of the Dwarven mercant guild and spy
Vivienne First Enchanter
Grey Warden Senior Grey warden
Iron Bull Leader of a Mercenary group
Sera is a high ranking thief
Bald elf guy is a Mage and if he is a magistrate then wouldn't this make sense.
Dorian: Dorian Pavus is a magister. The title conjures fear of arcane masters who once enslaved nations. Dorian may wield power of the magisters, but he delights in not being what you'd expect of them. Brazen and clever, this outcast is on a crusade to rid his homeland of its corruption.

Not what you expect and an outcast

Cullen Knight Captain or Commander now

Last one is a female warrior or Rogue of high rank in the world

BioWare is probably just keeping the female dwarf/Qunari companion secret until next year.

Shale could also return, since she is in Asunder. She isn't tied to anyone or has any specific goals anymore (asside from maybe still persuing becoming a fleshy thing again), making her a potential recruit I suppose.

So why is Varric back? He is also old.

Leliana or Sten in their new roles have a lot new story potential.
But Sten as the new Arishok would be very unlikely.
Leliana on the other hand. Why not? As the right hand of the Divine there are many story ways to
tell a different one than the Origins.
And don´t forget 10 years have past since Origins.

I don't know and I don't look forward to it.

Leliana or Sten in their new roles have a lot new story potential.

Sten's story potential as a companion is identical to his old story potential as a companion. The Arishok (himself) sent me to do something and now I discover the world is more interesting. His story potential as a detached NPC is totally different.

Leliana's new role is more or less exactly what her old role was. Just with more authority.

A good companion is one that is facing a challenge in their life. One that is lost and uncertain. Sten and Leliana already found themselves.

I don't see how it could be possible for the leader of the Antaam and one of the three leaders of the Qun to be a companion.

Yes i don´t doubt that. He was a bad example as companion. I should have picked Shale then.
