This is something that recently came to mind, but is there some kind of lore explanation for all aliens speaking English? Translators or something of the sort.

It would seem odd if the alien species just decided to use English as their new universal language.

It's translators. To avoid the "moocha shaka paka" scenario.

Edit: that's assuming of course, they haven't changed that since the first game while they were tampering with everything else. :P

Who would want to be reading subtitles through the whole game?

They all use translators that allow each of the individual species to understand one another according to the Codex.

There are translators, it's an entry included in the Bring Down the Sky codex updates.

Indeed translators, even the Batarians keep theirs updated so they can keep the propaganda flowing.

There's two answers. One is that there is a galactic standard language called...Galactic. Shepard even asks Alestia Iallis to translate her scientific jargon into Galactic.

Then there's the codex from Bring down the Sky:

Technology: Translation

Human cultures remain linguistically divided. Some converse in Spanish, others in Mandarin, Arabic, Swahili, etc. Every alien race has their own equally broad panoply of languages and dialects.

Most individuals know only their mother tongue, and rely on machine translation. Modern portable computers allow anyone with a few hundred credits of equipment to enjoy seamless real-time translation of alien languages, courtesy of handheld PDAs, computers in clothing or jewelry, or sub-dermal implants. Without fast and accurate translation, galactic trade and culture would not exist.

Governments provide subsidized software, updated through the public extranet "on the fly", often as users approach spaceport customs facilities. Even the batarians, who isolated themselves from galactic society nearly two decades ago, take pains to provide up-to-date glossaries and linguistic rules, though most suspect that this is only so they can continue exporting propaganda.

It is still considered broad-minded and practical to be able to speak without machine aid. Children often take courses in alien language, and most races can speak the simplified artificial "trade tongue" with little difficulty.

Some species must rely on machine translation to interact with the rest of the galaxy. Hanar, for example, cannot reproduce the spoken language of any humanoid species, and other races cannot reproduce hanar bioluminescence without mechanical aid. Newly discovered or obscure races don't have machine translation available until the linguists have had time to study them.

The translator also includes a facial hologram. Instead of the actual mouth and whatnot movements it visualizes what it would be in English.

Duh.

So how did Shepard understand Liara after they did it? She was still naked.

Implants.

Mass Effect 3 new tech ability:
Scramble Translator:

Messes up the communication device of the target making him unable to talk with his fellow companions that do not speak the same language. Can also be used on allies incase you are tired of their annoying conversations.

Either Liara or Shepard could have learned Galactic or each other's respective languages for one. I think it's most likely they were communicating in Galactic honestly.
It could also be that the translators are implanted into their bodies.

Yes, obviously they have translators, or speak a galactic tongue. Does it matter?

Although surely in the case of Liara, or in fact any Asari, couldn't they not do their "mind meld" with a human and essentially learn the language fluently. And potentially they could also pass on this knowledge, ala the cipher in ME1

It's a common sci-fi trope that people accept so we can all go ahead and proceed to the meat of the narrative. It's not a big deal

I'd like for it to be in some part of ME3, Shepard gets in an accident or something and his translator doesn't work. You're walking around a place and some Krogan starts bullying you.
