This game is making the big assumption that English speaking countries will actually be relevent in several centuries. If it was realistic, they should be speaking Hindi or Mandarin.

I would imagine given the long life of Asari that most of them are multi-lingual - after all if you've 1000 years to kill why not pick up a bit of foreign lingo.

But yeah translators. It makes the game a lot more accessible overall. Including other languages would be interesting but not feasible as you'd have to invent your own to make it sound not ridiculous (i.e. KOTOR, although I didn't mind that too much) or use known languages but that can get a bit political. So yeah translators.

Its not like Bioware was gonna sit down and make a language for each Alien. I just don't bother thinking about it, No one questions movies about the Roman empire when all the Romans are speaking English.

Apart from the universal translators, there also seems to be a universal trade language that most people who expect to travel are using. At some point Shepard comments snarkily how she wonders if the opposing side has troubles understanding Galactic. It's just replaced with English for convenience's sake.

If there wasn't some sort of translator or common Galactic language then playing ME would be like watching an exotic foreign film with all those subtitles.

Despite China's growing influence, English is still the universal business language.  For example, international pilots all have to be fluent in English since every international traffic controller speaks it.   This has nothing to do with the influence of the U.S, it's just that an American company designed the vast majority of flight instruments in use today.   That's also why aircraft still use Imperial measurements and not metric.

I'm pretty sure the in game codex explains that the omni-tool includes a translator.

Umm...game localizations are not the same thing as the languages the in-game characters are speaking.

If you want to pretend the characters are speaking one of those languages, you can. Nothing in the lore says all humans speak English. It's just being presented in a language the audience can understand.

It's translators. To avoid the "moocha shaka paka" scenario.

Edit: that's assuming of course, they haven't changed that since the first game while they were tampering with everything else. :P

LOL so tru & remember the "Shinny wanny niddy diddy bo bo"

I'd love to know the backwards argument behind that claim.

French is one of the two official working languages of the UN. (English is the other one.)

Translators... ya... Also, maybe some of the aliens just know how to speak English, or maybe BioWare secretly went to everyone's houses and implanted translators on all your speakers.

Yeah, translators. Get friendly with the Codex.

:) I am, I just don't happen to own the Bring Down The Sky dlc.

And if its mentioned elsewhere I couldn't find it.

Well if you don't have either DLC for Mass Effect, they're both now 240 msp for this week.

Now on topic, the omni-tool has a built in translator so that the commander can converse with any known alien species. As for the whole English language takeover. Practically every country teaches their children English in school, in Japan and France it's pretty much mandatory. At least that's what I learned from my Japanese friend, and French class, lol.

Implants.

Mass Effect 3 new tech ability:
Scramble Translator:

Messes up the communication device of the target making him unable to talk with his fellow companions that do not speak the same language. Can also be used on allies incase you are tired of their annoying conversations.

So much win.

It consists of nothing but really nasty sounding throat noises that no human could hope to produce.

Shepard is a career military officer. As part of his training he no doubt learned Galactic, or at least the basics. As an Asari Liara is most likely fluent in it.
