Now before this starts to seem too confrontational, I honestly do understand that the majority of your target market is male, Bioware, I do. However I think it would have been nice to at least see one or two concept arts or hear a mention of a female inquisitor; from what I saw in the gamescom video, not only was the inquisitor referred to as a male but all the concept arts seemed to depict a male one as well (although one was dubious, but the same shaped character was male in another art so I'm pretty sure it was a he).

Maybe I'm reading too much into concept art, but at this stage the concept art is a big part of the marketing material being released, and the absence of a woman is annoying me a tiny bit.

Maybe I have completely missed some other concept art of a female inquisitor, and I would welcome seeing it if that were the case :)

Sorry about this, it's just the genral lack of female hawke in marketing for Da2 really rubbed me the wrong way ahaha.

inb4 entitled, inb4 it's just concept art, inb4 you're getting worked up over nothing ;)

Because of the lack of female protagonists in gaming at the moment.

I like equal representation.

@MisterJB, are you sure that's the inquisitor? It has no kind of symbol, and doesnt resemble the other inquisitor concept art...

I may have missed when it was confirmed that was the inquisitor though , I'm not around here that much.

BioWare has been a bit of a leader in things like female protags getting closer to equal billing, non hetero romances and such. Give them a break.

Equal representation means you have the choice to play as a male or female Inquisitor which, because it's BioWare, you absolutely have that choice.

So the question is pretty valid concerning this topic - why does one developer calling the Inquisitor a he annoy you?

There are a lot of female protagonists in games today. You can still play as a female in the game.

Umm no, equal presentation in the *marketing* of the game is not the same as just offering the option.

Did you read my post? I barely even touched upon what Cameron said in my OP, I was more focusing on the concept art side of it.

I'm pretty sure I saw concept art (from that survey) of a female inquisitor. Here: http://www.pcgamesn....onage3comps.jpg I think she's on the bottom with the spell in her hand.

I share your pain, and I hope that we see more female inquisitor in the future. For what it's worth, I think Bioware's games have been pretty great (particularly Dragon Age) about their portrayal of female characters so far. So the marketing doesn't always reflect the game itself.

I often think marketing is scared of female visibility (for stupid reasons), but I can only speculate why they do what they do.

Edit: Also, I think some of the concept art is deliberately vague and ambiguous where gender presentation presentation and sex is concerned. Lots of profile shots, shots of the Inquisitor's back, and shots from way far away, and such.

I hope they do at least something similar to ME3, where we had some FemShep trailers. I'm with you though. I'd be satisfied with one trailer showing that you can be a female inquisitor.

We have no clue it's the female inquisitor.

@shinobi, I'm not saying that we won't be able to play as a female in the game, I'm saying that so far the two genders haven't been given equal marketing.

And as for your other point, there are some female protagonists. 'A lot' is certainly pushing it. It is still a problem; I recommend you to read this article on the matter: http://www.theoryofg...onist-part-one/

They showed this, so I'm not sure why they couldn't replicate the same with a female inquisitor. Unless they didn't work on it yet.

@andar, I agree, the presentation in the game itself has been AMAZING (in Dragon Age more than mass effect (I'm looking at you, Asari)), but the marketing shows us so much more about the audience they are trying to gear the game towards, and if you aren't inclusive in your marketing as well as your actual gameplay, it just seems a bit silly. I want to know why they aren't including women in their marketing, if that's the case :)

And while it has been a little vague, the new concept arts released today *clearly* show a man.

I was mildly annoyed by the lack of female Inquisitors in the video, too. However, several people have tweeted some of the devs about it, so the devs are aware of the oversight. They variously expressed surprise that anyone would assume that the PC couldn't be a woman (based on BioWare's track record, which is lightyears ahead of other companies in this respect). This is a fair point.

However, the people who brought it to their attention also made fair points:

- Why bother specifically mentioning that you can play rogues, warriors or mages, humans, elves or dwarves, but neglect to mention that you can play female or male, which is as much of a selling point for some people?

- People who are familiar with BioWare's games already will assume you can play male or female, but what about new audiences? It's worth mentioning it, since in many games you can only play male. Again, this is a selling point for some people.

I just watched the Dev Diary video again and paused on each shot of the Inquisitor armors and background blurred images and not one is female. I hope this will be addressed and not just sticking a couple bowls and a narrow waist on the male armor.

I'd like to know if you work for EA Marketing, because aside from some dev diaries, a couple of convention panels, and a trailer that featured no distinctly male or female Inquisitor at all, how are you condemning their "lack of representation"? They showed off one race and one gender in the different armours concept art. Considering they had four and a half minutes out of an hour long presentation with nine other games, I don't blame them for keeping it brief and focusing on the major selling points of the game.

I'm glad it's not only me that saw this as an issue, I must say. perhaps Bioware may try to rectify this by releasing some of the female inquisitor concept art they have? (well, if they have any at all...)

Yeah, I mean when they specifically mention "you can play as an elf or a dwarf or a human" it seems that would be a very natural place to mention you can play as male or female as it's one of the big cc decisions like race or class.

@oldirtybaron,

Of course I don't work for EA marketing, don't try to use such a manner of arguing.

So you're saying, apart from all the men featured in those things you listed without a single woman, how is there a lack of woman being featured? Umm....

Besides, in the video we saw today we saw about 20 different versions of the male inquisitor wearing different armour. How difficult would it have been to make 10 female and 10 male?

Timing is not an issue considering they could easily be shown at the same time in that regard.

In the English language "himself" can be used to describe either gender, its not very common anymore, but it is an accepted use of the word.

Yes, sorry Andar you already linked me to that, I forgot to reply. We have a single image of a female inquisitor compared to many many more of the male inquisitor, then. One single image.

In a survey which wasn't intended to be released to the public, and most certainly doesn't count as marketing.
