I'm quite confident that Bioware is well aware over this particular issue (as evidenced by the developer presence in this thread). The marketing campaign on Mass Effect 3 included both female and male Shepard, and I seem to recall reading somewhere that they were planning on incorporating a female and male Inquisitor in future marketing as well. Though I might just be speaking out of my behind. In any case that's what I'm hoping for.

FemShep turned out to be completely awesome, so I have high hopes for the female Inquisitor in DAI.

@Allan

Hmm ok, I was wondering if Matt Rhodes was with Bioware, thanks for clearing that up haha (maybe he should have a blue tag under his name? Just so that people know that he knows what he's talking about! :P )

To be honest with you, I think we are kind of speaking on different levels regarding the armour thing; I question whether showing us twenty or so different armours was a better choice for a video about customisation, when you could have shown us 10 different armours on two different genders to show us the breadth of the customisation. Surely it would require the same amount of work? (Or, even, less considering the fact that they would know exactly what they *wanted* the armour to look like already).

In all honesty I don't think people would have complained if we'd lost 10 blurry pictures of new armour from the video in return for seeing what the vision for the female protagonist is.

And I'm sure we start with the male appearance first because that's the one most people will play. As I said before, that's surely not even in question.

While this is true, I also think the number of female players would increase with marketing that was more inclusive of them.  I know that doing that represents a risk and game companies have to be reasonably risk averse to stay in business these days, but it does remain a conundrum that won't change until people take more steps in that direction.  Again, if all this content is present in the game that female players might enjoy, it seems sensible to attract as many female players as possible rather than minimizing the content's presence (and borderline hiding it, at least in the past) in marketing because "well, brodudes."

I agree. It is also a known scientific fact that females are better in every regard.

If the black woman in the pic is the marketed female PC. Then right on!! :D

I would definitely be alright with this.
POCs rarely get the spotlight, especially in fantasy.
Plus, she just makes me swoon a little. xD

Girl crush alert! lol! I agree that the spotlight rarely go to people of color so imo, if the female inquisitor was marketed as a non white that would be far more noteworthy to me. And I agree, the bald female is looking pretty darn bad ass, and I say this as a straight woman lol! If I can make her in the character creator I may actually play a female in the game. DAO was the only bioware game I've ever played a female completely. I just had to romance Alistair at the time. ^_^

I was actually surprised to see female Inquisitor on the concept art today, so yay that she made an appearance. Would it be nice for her to be more prominent in marketing? Yes. Will I get upset if she won't be? Probably not. Admittedly, it is most likely due to the fact that female protagonists are not present in games very often, even less so in marketing. Nonetheless, I would feel "noticed" as a female gamer if female Inquisitor made an appearance in media. That would be a cherry on the top of the tasty cake of Bioware games.

This much does seem very true and gives me ample reason for optimism.

The fact that your avatar is of Anita Sarkeesian...I hope it's just sarcasm for the sake of this topic.

I'm just saying that people already on this forum asking that marketing be directed at them (whether that's by female fans or by hardcore fans who will eventually get very loud when future trailers and interviews don't answer their [/i]questions) when marketing is intended primarily for people who don't know about the game is a difficult argument to make.

Thanks so much as ever for responding to your fanbase :)

I don't know about the OP, but I am not upset that BW isn't marketing to me, a woman. I'm disappointed that BW is not marketing to women.

Let me explain how I discovered Dragon Age. My brother-in-law bought DA2 and invited me over to play. I was very unfamiliar with RPGs and only played shooters. I also did not have my own system; I was a so-called "casual gamer" who only played at friends' houses.

I fell in love with this game. I was shocked that I could not just create a female character, but make her look however I want her to look. My brother-in-law and I made a copper-skinned FemHawke with short white hair. She was amazing. I felt really powerful, kicking butt while controlling this character. Later he called me while I was at home and told me our character had just started a romance with Isabela! "WHAT?!" I shrieked. There's ROMANCE in this game? And... between two persons of the same gender?? I hastily did some research on the game and saw that all four characters were romanceable by either gender Hawke.

I then did some research on the prequel, Dragon Age: Origins, and saw that it was similar (although romance options were more limited). I went out and bought my first Xbox. And my first game was: Dragon Age: Origins. My second game was: Dragon Age 2. I played them to death.

I was NOT marketed to because I'm a woman in my 30s and no one would expect a person of my demographic to play video games. Yet thanks to my brother-in-law (someone the marketing people no doubt felt far more comfortable appealing to), I managed to discover the game on my own and instantly became a loyal customer to this day.

You said it yourself in your amazing talk about sex and video games. There is a huge untapped market out there, and appealing to them is a no brainer. Show people women. Show them people of color. Show them LGBT characters. They will also become loyal fans! Just like Yours Truly.

That's not to say there's been no [/i]thought to what they female PC looks like. Matt Rhodes and his team sometimes include a female PC in any concept pieces they're working on (a few you've seen in the dev diary, some hang on our wall, and many more you simply haven't seen yet) just to mix things up and to make sure the team is keeping it in mind.

Do you see how this can be seen as upsetting, even offensive, to someone? "Woman" is literally considered secondary to "Man" here. A female character is brought in to "mix things up." When I enter a room, am I "mixing things up" for all the men there? Is a female in their midst such an unusual thing? Why am I so incredibly different? Why am I such an Other?

Frozen, what we are doing here is challenging that. It's only when people challenge things that things begin to change.

And if it doesn't? Well, at least. We. Tried.

Although it would be nice to have females represented more in concept art and advertising...I'll be more happy to know my female character will have just as much and equal content and consideration as male characters, which has been lacking ( ME lack of equal LI's and swtor, male characters flirt with anything with a pulse but females tend to be prudes, with exception to a couple) I only point those out as they are the obvious differences.

I'm sure the option to play as a female will remain. They probably just didn't think to show the female Inquisitor model in the video.

But it would've been nice if they had.

To be fair wiccame, Dragon Age has always been very good in the way it's handled gender in both games.

So they used the word "himself" and suddenly everyone thinks that Bioware aren't going to include a female Inquisitor?

DarkKnight, did you even read the OP? Did you even read these pages discussing it?

Because that isn't even remotely the case. We KNOW there will be a female protagonist.

I'm positive that they were always going to get around to showing us the female Inquisitor.

But like motomotogirl said, why is it something they'd have to get around to, rather than something that feels just as natural as designing and showing off the fellas?

Granted, the team has responded to this very quickly and, with a few minor disappointments, pretty well on the most part. They have already heard the fanbase and are already considering the problem. Some of them are probably even already upset that this disappointment has overshadowed the excitement for some fans.

At the end of the day, this was an unfortunate oversight and not the result of any intentional exclusion on the part of the developers. I'm a female fan, and I've always felt very cared about by the teams at Bioware. Their features of Morrigan, Cassandra, and Vivienne already have shown that they view women as formidable and interesting and vital parts of the story that they want to tell.

So really, this thread can hopefully run out of some steam soon. Some viable concerns were raised. The developers have heard them. Let's say what we still need to and then move along.
