BioWare has always let us picked different gender roles just because we are seeing it as a male doesn't mean we can play as a female

@simfamSP, I agree with everything you said except for ME3's femshep being a step in the right direction; she had more lesbian romance options than straight ones (I wonder why *rolls eyes*), and this is a step BACKWARDS considering how good Bioware were with romances for each gender before that.

The marketting of femshep was in the right direction. The day of the release, they showed a trailer with femshep before maleshep, and I don't mention the other trailers with her.

They specifically mention that you can play different races because *some* people were upset that they'd have to play as a human which is what we were told up until a couple of weeks ago. Also I'm sure they mention warrior, rogue and mage specifically so people will understand that you don't have to be pro templar/chantry/circle that those choices are still there. SO far no one has been *DO we get to play as a female still?" I'm assuming that's why they haven't felt the need to bring it up.

I didn't think it needed so much to be mentioned to be honest given Bioware's records. I was more bothered by the fact that  we could see so many concepts with armor for the male inquisitor and not even one for the female inquisitor. But if the work hasn't even begun yet for the female inquisitor, it's normal.

I was the same way, I'm a female gamer and I didn't get my undies in a bunch about them only showing models of the male Inquisitor. The only thing I saw was hats!  Oh the hats! I love them, reminds me of the three musketeers, or my fencing instructor when he goes to Scarburough Ren Faire. Love those hats.

All you have to do is look at the strong female characters running throughout the series to see that Bioware is at the forefront of equality in gaming. The fact that they start the game development with a male human form does not lessen the steps they have taken to promote strong female characterization in gaming.

You say their in english. Or the could just use the Inqusitior, but the trouble is that did not even mention you could play as female.

It's becoming more and more common now, but I was actually taught (by my not at all old, female University Professor) to use "he" in gender neutral context because she was of the mind that you do not match the plural "they" (or it's equivalents) with a singular noun, and constant use of "he or she" everywhere ends up becoming distracting and wordy.

That's true, but the generic use of masculine pronoun is actually discouraged these days, because a body of evidence suggests it is actually *not* gender neutral and invokes gendered images, even if it is used in gender-neutral context.

And I'll stop here before I end up summarizing my whole BA thesis on generic masculine pronouns and their usage.

Dear feminists.... Please avoid having anything to do with Dragon Age. I don't want you to intimidate the Dragon Age Bioware team staffs to put more feminine crap in the game just to please you. I personally do not want to be forced to be a female Inquisitor! If it bothers you that much then you should play another game. Go play Tomb raider or something.

I can't believe people are complaining about this already. GO complain about something else already.

I must be missing something. ME3 Fem!Shep had Garrus and Kaidan for straight romances (Thane too, I suppose, but his wasn't really fully fleshed out). And then Liara and Traynor for queer options.

I guess you could argue for Allers, but like Thane she wasn't really fleshed out IMO.

Hmm, I guess the drawing wasn't clear enough. My bad. This is a female Inquisitor being coronated.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with expressing concern over the inclusion or lack thereof of a female protagonist. It is still a very valid and real issue that games lack in female representation, and I consider it a completely fair comment that we used the male pronoun exclusively.

I would strongly recommend that people avoid the tired old 'GOD, WHY AREN'T YOU DAMNED FEMINISTS EVER HAPPY' schtick in this thread, as I will take a very poor view on that.

Keep it civil, and try to remember that asking for inclusivity and consideration for an oft-underserved (but proportionally large) segment of the audience is nothing to attack anyone over.

I'm sorry equality intimidates you so.

Much as you do not want to be forced to be a female Inquisitor, I do not want to be forced to be a male Inquisitor. All we are asking for is that marketing and such reflect that there are two gender options available. If that bothers you so much go read a different forum.

Unlike asking for human/dwarf/elf options to get equal marketing time, women are actually real, and are a large part of Bioware's target audience.

I think what was meant is that if you did NOT import a Garrus romance, your only options were Kaidan, Liara, Samantha, and (dare I mention?) Allers. If you imported a save where Kaidan was dead, your FemShep had no possibility of a straight romance.

So Femshep have 6, out of which, one always dies (which was allright part of his story) and one always cheats. Which basically makes it 4.

And Male shep had:

Ashley, Liara, The Pilot, Miranda, Jack, Kaiden, Talli and none of their was forced to die.

That makes it 7 and they can all be saved.

I was just excited to see more stuff from in game.

Well, Garrus was only available if you imported.  And Kaidan might not be available at all.  And there was Allers, I think.

But I think the lack of straight options for women was mostly just a confluence of unfortunate circumstances.  Thane was always going to die, they kind of had to include a gay and a lesbian option and they already really had too many romances to handle as it is.  Of course, the Jacob thing was unfortunate.

Ah, thank you. Yes, "coronated" does sort of imply the character is being crowned as a ruler.

Would it really have been that hard to read this thread? Or at least the OP?
Noone was talking about adding anything to the game or foring the devs to do something.

It's just about the underrepresentation of women in the concept art and videos on DA:I so far, which irks me a little as well, but not too much, considering the early stage of marketing and that it's overshadowed by the amount of awesome information we're getting at the moment.

Just hoping for more female PCs in DA:I footage in the future.

Garrus is only romancable if you started his romance in ME2, and if you didn't romance him in ME2 and saved Ashley in ME1 femShep has zero straight romance options in ME3. And Jacob always dumbs you and Thane always dies. So no straight romances for femShep if you do that.

guyShep's romances on the other hand stay loyal and it is possible to keep them all alive (Ashley, Tali, Miranda, Jack, even Kelly). Liara's wearing such a heavy plot armour she doesn't even need mentioning, and then there's Allers, of course.

So... yeah. The imbalance there is kinda ridiculous.

This is premature. You're already complaining about a marketing effort that has barely begun and has over a year to go. You've got, what, six to nine minutes of video and a dozen or so stills to talk about so far? And that's the basis for your complaint?

It's interesting that you've decided to skip right past the request stage, 'Can we have some female representation in future DA:I marketing?' and instead felt it was the appropriate time for the complain stage "Inequality! They used a male pronoun and a handful of male concept art! Woe unto the female gamers!"

It's possible that in a few months your concern over lack of playable gals in the marketing will be born out, but if it is, it won't be because BioWare hates women. It'll be because they determined that since less than 1 out of 5 people finished a female playthrough in the last game they had a female PC in the marketing, they made a conscious decision that the demographic wasn't big enough to focus their limited marketing budget on.

Hopefully that won't be the case. Ideally we'll get some women being inquisitive in the marketing, but in my opinion while it's probably appropriate to request, it's way too early to complain about.

Gender is assumed and treated as such.

Race choice could not be assumed and has to be pointed out.

Assumed by who? Marketing isn't primarily aimed at people who are already going to buy the game.

If I'm unfamiliar with Dragon Age, why would I assume that I can play a woman? There's lots of games where I can't.

TK514 wrote...

No, it's not. People complained from day 1 that the only Shepard shown was a man, but EA didn't show a female Shepard until the last game.

DA:O primarily used male PCs in their marketing (the city elf origin was a big exception) while DA II only used beardy Hawke.
