Mass Effect weapon choices as actual personal carry

For me I'd probably have to go with the Phalanx or Paladin. Phalanx is more concealable but Paladin hits much harder and even though a civilian wouldn't stand much chance against an angry Krogan, you never know.
I like the Acolyte but it's completely impractical in a non-battlefield situation.
I suppose if I could conceal a Crusader shotgun, I'd be down with that, but it's not all that practical. That or an Eviscerator would be nice for home defense though.

Failing that, probably a Scorpion or Talon.

Well, ME2's Carnifex at least. They took some of the kick out in the new model.

Okay, okay. Either a Hornet or a Disciple.

I am not an expert but I don't think that this is how the world works - rather than standing in the open trading gunfire until the defences of one party are depleted the first person to get hit will go down.Phalanx is more concealable but Paladin hits much harder
[In particular, everyone and their dog would be carrying a deagle if there was any sense to that argument]

Because Americans are the only people in the world who own guns. Yep.

In the real world, Krogan don't exist. If in real life you had a legitimate fear of being attacked by men in full tactical gear, you might want to carry the firepower neccesary to defend yourself. Plenty of people carry AKs for self-defense in less developed nations. I think it is save to say if Krogan existed in real life, there would be plenty of people who wanted to carry weapons that hit hard enough to stop a charging Krogan. Most handguns don't have the fire power to put a serious dent in a Krogan. If you happened to life in a hub world that hosted a variety of species, and not just humans, you would want more than a Phalanx pistol.

regular munnition wouldn't stop a charging Krogan, but given you have tracers [laced munnition like snowblind rounds and such other effects] it sure would hinder their charging

A Talon pistol would also be nice, though I'd say walking around with one of those would be a real great way to get yourself locked up for being a Cerberus agent.

We are talking about stopping power only; by your logic no one should use these guns because higher caliber guns exist.Plenty of people carry AKs for self-defense in less developed nations

What part of "less developed" nation did you miss? Not only is there a law in many areas against owning military-grade assault weapons, but one also needs to go through firearms training and obtaining a license, on top of purchasing the weapon itself, the ammunition, and proper maintenance. It isn't like you can go up to a vending machine, pop in a few quarters, and get a SCAR-H and a case of 7.62x51mm NATO. Even in the more developed nations, getting your hands on high-caliber weapons is very difficult without access to a full-scale armory.
I also like the logic that you're employing, that higher caliber automatically equals better.

I'll just let the stupidity in this statement show itself.

When I've been to gun ranges, there's this aura in the air. This very unpleasent stench of desperation. Looking around, I get the feeling that people desperately, desperately want someone to try and mug them in an alley. Or someone to try and enter their house. Or for China to invade or something. So that once, just once, they can finally use this skill they've been training for years with. They can finally feel that rush of triumph and success.

As sexy and sleek as guns are portrayed in fiction, I'm afraid that the people who advocate guns in real life are generally an incredibly unsexy bunch.

And hence we have a lot of gun nuts very drastically overstating how dangerous society is to try and justify themselves. Pretending that America has become sheep threatened by wolves, pretending we're on the cusp on invasion by a dozen countries, pretending that criminals ready and eager to kill are on every streetcorner. All this despite every statistic saying otherwise.
That fact that plenty of gun ranges now offer all kinds of zombie survival gear and information should be indicative that their primary draw is fantasy, not actual safety.
