Regarding point one: They weren't so cautious before with any project, I had no reason to believe they would be with the Collector base. And they might do more with the tech than analyze it.
Regarding point two: I've played it, yes. (Though we are in a ME2 forum. Probably no one who hasn't played 3 yet will ever read this, but technically there should be no ME3 spoilers here) I can't remember a good thing that came of these two projects. And nothing they did in ME3 was good either.

We'll have to disagree on that, because I can't tell you what I'm thinking because of what you say about the ME3 spoilers. Nevertheless, I don't think I spoil ME3 when I say that some scientific work they did indirectly enabled something quite good to be done. Science & technology research is often not used in the way it was originally intended by its' creators. People can create good technology for nefarious purposes and indirectly bring about positive consequences as a result of enabling other uses of that technology.
