This is quite off-topic so I don't know how long it'll be before a mod locks it up. I got a "repair startup" error recently so I'm going to salvage whatever important info I had stored on the drive and then format. I have a 1 TB hard drive but I've been considering whether or not it'd be better to have two HDDs, one for the OS and the other for games, documents, etc. In this case, how big should the drives be? Would you recommend a SSD for the OS one or it's simply not worth it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers.

An SSD as system drive is a great thing. It really speeds up the system. As for how much capacity, depends on your system.

If you really only need it for your OS (mind that the RAM is also being imaged on your system drive, so if you have particular large RAM, factor that in!).

A 60GB SSD can do the job for OS only, but generally I would go beneath 90GB so you can install your everyday utilities on the SSD too and have some room to spare.

That said, you don't need a SSD at all. The system won't run any better, just faster.

I take it then that you do agree that having a separate HDD (be it SSD or not) for the OS is a good idea?

Only really necessary is you plan on using a SSD as those simply don't have enough capacity for everything (in an affordable fashion anyway).

If you don't use a SSD, it's not really necessary to split. Though you can always use two HDDs in raid to increase speed.

I personally wouldn't have a setup now without the OS on a separate drive, SSD or not. Just my preference.

What's your reasoning?

Far easier to reinstall your OS and with it on a separate drive, you tend to get better access times to other programs/data stored elsewhere, and you get faster boot ups if it's on an SSD. It's not a huge deal, but I've found since I put my OS on a separate one (SSD) it just makes things a bit easier overall for me.

Sorry, I'd misread and understood you preferred everything on a single drive. My bad. Yes, that's my reasoning as well, just wanted to know if I was missing something.

So, according to an Origin rep, I can't install games on a drive other than the OS one so that pretty much rules out buying a SSD for the OS, it's simply not large enough. Or has anyone been able to install Origin games on a drive other than the OS one?

I see you have failed your purification rites to the Machine spirit.

He's full of crap. I have all my Origin games installed on my separate E (game) drive. Just itell the Origin client to install on whatever drive you want the games on.

*edit* Sorry, once Origin is installed, go to your 'Application Settings' (Under the Origin tab in the client) and then the 'Advanced' tab and change the game install location to whatever you want.

Thank you! Now the SSD option is back on the table.:)

Note my edit above. You install Origin on the OS drive, but you can change the location within the client to whatever drive you want the games installed on.

Ah, so that may be why the rep told me I couldn't. So Origin must be on the OS drive but the games can be anywhere else, right? Pardon my insistence, I simply want to confirm.

Yes, exactly. This is the way I have it set up:

My OS drive is an SSD with Origin installed there under Programs (x86) [using Win7 Pro 64 bit, and this is the default install location when you install the client]. Once it was installed, I went into the settings (as noted above) and changed the default location of the game installs to my Game drive, which is drive E (this is a HDD). Now every time I install a game, it's installed on my E drive automagically. Easy as pie. And everyone likes pie, right? :P

I'm not so fussed about where my data goes, but one thing I won't be without is some sort of failsafe capability: my games PC uses RAID-1 (mirroring) and my server a form of RAID-6 array. I've seen too many hard drives die over the years to not have some sort of protection, especially as I'm often too lazy to backup. I hasten to add that it doesn't take the place of a good backup regimen, but I still wouldn't want to be without some protection from hardware embuggerences.
