FANFICTION: Has BioWare ever considered publishing some of the stories?

I don't know if this topic has ever come up before but, whilst reading through the wealth of fan written Mass Effect stories available online, a thought occurred to me: Would BioWare ever be interested in publishing some of those stories?

I'm not talking about the million word behemoths out there; the Alternate Universe tales (even though some of them are brilliantly written); and certainly not the stories with more 'mature' content, but perhaps a collection of the short stories ( a la "Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina" Star Wars tales) that exist within the canon BioWare has established could be published?

BioWare already has an army of dedicated fans churning out stories inspired by the characters they love from the game. What's to stop them from selecting a few of those writers and turning them from avid fan to an official contributor to the Mass Effect franchise? I don't mean making them staff writers or anything, but allowing their stories to be officially made available to a wider audience in book or kindle form...

This could even be part of a competition, where BioWare invites writers to create a story within a certain set of parameters. The only problem seems to be logistical, i.e. going through the vast plethora of stories to select the few you'd want. There are some really talented writers out there, but everyone must realise they're not going to get rich from this. I don't know how it works for the rest of the world, but in Britain writers typically get a mere £49 for their short to be published in a compilation - So, no millionaire writers to be found there - But, seriously, who would pass on the opportunity to be an official part of the Mass Effect Universe? I'm certain there are thousands of aspiring writers who would jump at the chance to have their work published.

So, what are your thoughts? Is it feasible, or merely a pipe-dream? What say you?

No sane company will ever publish fanfiction. It's too much trouble.  And most of it is godawful anyway.

It's true there is a lot of poorly written stuff out there, which is why it's such a chore to sift through it to find the good stuff.

Just because it hasn't been done before doesn't make it a bad idea. Remember this isn't without precedent. BioWare did run a fanfiction competition for Dragon Age last year. The only difference being that they didn't publish the winning entries.

If you can find well written fiction, and it fits in with the canon events BioWare has established, why not celebrate the fan's work? Who knows, it may even generate positive buzz before the next game is released?

Food for thought.Image IPB
