So I decided to play through DA: O again and my curiosity is getting the better of me, now I know you can upgrade armor in the Wardens Keep storage chest, my question is: Which armor and/or weapons are upgradeable this way?

P.S. I know these forums are pretty empty since the game is so old now, but I assume some people still come to chat ect here. Hoping for some sort of answer :D

If you take a look at this wiki site, it states
Material: Varies (Tier 5-7)
So that mean material can range from red steel to dragonbone.
So just look up the item in question and wiki should tell if it varies or not.
http://dragonage.wik...i/Cailan's_Arms

For comparison, wiki states that Spellweaver sword comes in silverite, it can not be upgraded.
Material: Silverite (Tier 6)
http://dragonage.wik...iki/Spellweaver

I also found that you dont actually have to be lv 17 to get dragonbone material,
leave and come back enough times and they will occasionally turn into dragonbone,
at which time its time to pull out that particular item, or it may well become downgraded next time you return

I've never noticed armor/ weapons upgrading by using the chest, though I've heard that mentioned. I tried it, didn't do anything. You're supposed to be able to leave it in the chest, exit the area (even just to camp, so long as you're out of Soldier's Keep), and then return for it to upgrade. I've read that just saving and reloading does it, but that also didn't work for me. I never did experiment enough though. But it does work for sure if you sell to a merchant. Yes, it requires some gold, but then it's instant and you don't wait in vain for the chest to... do something... while fighting in inferior armor. Might want to save first though.Yes, it requires some gold, but then it's instant and you don't wait in vain for the chest to... do something... while fighting in inferior armor. Might want to save first though. You just have to keep in mind certain requisites for it to work:

1. It depends on your level. I don't know the level-correspondence breakdown, but just note the quality (tier level) of the regular armor and weapons you find as random loot or at merchants. The DAWiki on armor mentions this for reference:

Light Armor: Rough (Tier 1) Cured Hide (Tier 2) Leather (Tier 3) Hardened (Tier 4) Reinforced (Tier 5) Inscribed (Tier 6) Drakeskin (Tier 7) Dragonwing (Tier 8) High Dragon Hide (Tier 9)

Medium, Heavy, and Massive Armor: Iron (Tier 1) Grey Iron (Tier 2) Steel (Tier 3) Veridium (Tier 4) Red Steel (Tier 5) Silverite (Tier 6) Dragonbone (Tier 7) White Steel (Tier 8) Volcanic Aurum (Tier 9)

Tier 7 is the best you'll find in DAO. If you're seeing mostly dragonbone drops and store items, you know you'll be more likely to get dragonbone if you sell it (or successfully pull off the chest trick). It may upgrade to a max of silverite at, say, 17th level and a max of dragonbone at, say, 21st level. Dunno.

2. It also depends on which merchant you consult. A merchant that doesn't even carry dragonbone likely won't upgrade to it. Bodahn's wares upgrade, but he and maybe Gorim are probably 2nd best to the Soldier's Keep smithy. Not only are Mikhael Dryden's regular armors and weapons the highest possible quality of any vendor at any level or stage of the game (equipped with dragonbone and dragonthorn and such well before anyone), but after I've sold something to him to get the upgrade, I didn't even need to leave the area to return to the store with it revamped to the max. You should generally only do so if you see dragonbone dominating his inventory, however.

3. It's true that not all armor/ weapons upgrade. Pretty much all regular stuff does- including the semi-magical regular Dalish stuff- but only a portion of the magical stuff does. I've done plenty of experimenting on this one but have no ready list to share. Most stuff from the DLCs seems to upgrade- Soldier's Keep (Asturian's Blade, no, but Warden's armor set, yes), Return to Ostagar (nearly everything, Cailan's armor and weapons arguably the best in the game for this reason)... hm, but not much from Honnleath or Cadash, I believe. One rule is that if you see the magic item sold at a vendor, expect that it will always be the Tier level you're seeing it at in the store. Those are set permanently. So Bodahn's Earthheart Portable Bulwark will always be red steel.

After some searching the web, I can't find a comprehensive list of the upgradable magic items. This is what I've found myself of the more notable items that I tend to use during the game rather than just cash in on.

Upgradeable:
Cailan's armor
Maric's Blade
Duncan's weapons
Warden Commander's armor
Repeater Gloves
The gloves and boots you give to Zevran (IIRC)
Nugcrusher

Not upgradeable:
Juggernaut armor
Aeducan Shield (*weeps*)
Duncan's Shield
Howe's Shield
Ancient Elven armor
Blood Dragon armor
Diligence armor
Helm of Honnleath
Cadash Stompers
Dead Thaig dagger
Olaf's Cheese Knife
Asturian's Blade
Oathkeeper Blade

4. Not that you'd forget, but before selling the item (or leaving it in the chest) you need to remove any runes you've put in them. It won't lose the runes, but the upgrade can't happen. You may also need to restore the original color if you use the Dye Kit, but I doubt it.

5. Not all the non-upgradeable armor is inferior, mind you. The Gloves of Diligence, for instance, have a magic quality of +4 armor, giving them the highest-armor-rating gloves in DAO. And Howe's shield is better than any dragonbone due to its defense bonuses.

Should help a little...

Wow that's a lot of info lol. Yeah the only way I have ever seen the chest upgrade stuff was as I level up, leaving the area and returning never seems to work, But leveling up works.

Thank you for the list it helps a little, I also searched the internet for a list but didn't find one lol, hoped someone here might know :P

I found that at least on the PC, where you have to sell / buy from the blacksmith,
you dont actually have to be lv 17 to get dragonbone.
Travel from and back to wardens keep enough times and material will randomly upgrade,
i eventually had cailans stuff in dragonbone at lv 12,
just make sure to take it out of the chest/buy it back when an item is the material you want,
or it will randomly downgrade again until you are lv 17-18
