Inventory, Character record, Map, Journal, Codex, Abilities, Close hero menu
This is one aspect I am really looking forward to, the exploring areas in which you have not been led around by the nose to get to.
Pretty detailed game telemetry data they have, pretty cool.

I know other people like exploration, but me it's like saying that they were going to make turret sequences the key mechanic in ME4. Or conversations with glowing children, maybe.
edit: The BG name dropping confusing because BG1 and BG2 are quite dramatically different.

they are, but both do have random things and places to explore.

I have no idea what you are referring to in your examples. It's very simple and very clear. They are having zones but the maps in those zones are really big. They are letting you explore the entirety of these maps as there will be things to see and do not related to the main quest. Optional exploration like in BG1.
So again what is horrible about it? You never came out and sais you hated optional exploration, but gave some bizarre silly examples of.....something or other.

I hate exploration. I hate having interesting content walled off behind stupid tedium.

depends how far off the beaten track you have to go for the lovely extras surely? Eploring every little piece of a map earned you easter eggs and loot in BG, and Fallout, two genre defining classics. How can that be bad, as long as it is optional?

I'm slowly becoming more and more discouraged.....
Why? The only discouraging thing I've seen so far is the combat, which is still in pre-alpha and, let's face it, the combat has never been particularly strong in Dragon Age, not exactly what the series is known for. But what on earth could your problem possibly be with optional exploration?

Laidlaw:
"Fundamentally, the experience I want players to have, the campaign, right, the core storyline presents you with a series of challenges, and those challenges are fulfilled via exploring."
Warner:
"Probably the majority of the gameplay is the player exploring Thedas"

This is really promising. And they are aware that they should do it carefully because their priority like Mike said is the story first.

Where's this "optional" coming from?

Well the story objectives in DA:O and DA 2 can't be accomplished without "exploring" certain areas, more so DA:O obviously. That just means you're moving thorugh different enviornments as you accomplish various story/quest objectives. I think they've been pretty clear that in addition to moving through new areas to pursue critical plot paths, which is, as I said, a form of exploration and a feature of pretty much any RPG in addition to Dragon Age, there will also be non-story related places you can expore if you so choose to.
They've also made it clear in the video that they're intent on keeping the same story/party based formula that DA is built around rather than shift to limitless open world exploration, so it seems like you're just cherry picking their statements to portray it in as negative a light as possible.

Thank you for the link op.

I don't like exploration. Exploration is apparently going to be at the heart of the game. I think this is bad.
