Okay, I'm on the XBOX version right now (I bounce between it and my PC version because my PC blows and can't render DAO without sputtering once in a while), and I just got my second specialization point.

Currently, he's an AW that got that specialization immediately after Ostagar. The headcanon is that he just got so angry that he picked up Earhart's Portable Bulwark and the nearest sword to start cleaving things apart with (much to the terror of Morrigan and Alistair at the time). He's built to run sustainables, with his only REAL damage output being Mana Clash (funfact: he hates other mages really hard if they get the 'good' idea to hit him with anything).

I normally build AWs to go with Spirit Healer, but I haven't played with Awakening as much as I have vanilla Origins. What is more fitting a sullied spellcaster? I'm feeling Healer/BattleMage/AW because he gets so angry it just radiates off him, but with Anders and Wynne I'm leaning more towards BloodMage/BattleMage/AW, because he's so angry his spewing obscenities boil enemy blood via intensity.

What's the 'meta' choice to make? I'd imagine BloodMage lets you stack endless sustainables and the occasional pulse of a BattleMage AoE... But I don't fully know the whole system in Awakening in the way I'd like to. Help?

Shapeshifter: The angry mage is so angry, that he turns into a raging bear.

oh my god why didn't I think of this

Do the AoE effects combine with whatever I shapeshift into? If so, I have a new build for Awakening.

Pulsing out Healing Aura as a Bear with Combat Magic and a whole lot of angry... Oh the glory.

Sadly no. Every sustained abilities turn off in the shapeshifted form. AW/BM/Battlemage would be far better from gameplay PoV but well, nothing's as angry as a bear or a corrupted bereskarn.

From a powergamer viewpoint, shapeshifter goes out the window,
they wont ever come close to the tankiness of AW, and the one thing that is dangerous to AW,
-debuffing, will debuff the shapeshift as well, minus the spell shield and shimmering shield that could prevent it.

regardless if you do spirit or battlemage, you will want to have many un-spent skill points and spell points to spend as you enter awakening, so stick to basic skills & spells in origins so you will have
points ready to allocate into Attunement line, and battlemage if you chose that.
Also have at least 6 skill point ready for vitality & clarity.

One thing about spirit healer, AFAIK SH doesnt heal itself, only insignificant others,
making it moot for tanking and soloing.
