I only just remembered Riordan and his accent. I thought it was quite well done.

Another thing to note perhaps with Orlesian accents: perhaps the upper class doesn't speak the same way the lower class does? Maybe the nobles purposefully speak in a ridiculous accent because it is "Noble" to do so?

EDIT: I'm sure people would like the same of Fereldan accents if everyone spoke with a really posh English accent.

Yeah, I don't think I can say I wouldn't love a Riordan like Inquisitor.

Honestly, I'd be keen on hearing a non-exaggerated Iranian or Connacht accent. O,o

I wouldn't mind an Orlesian accent, as long as it is natural, like Riordan or Leliana, rather than hammed up like Lady de Launcet or the aforementioned Hubert.

I also doubt we'll get 6 different voice actors, as awesome as that would be. If you were playing a surface dwarf or an alienage elf, it would make sense to speak with the same accent as the humans you lived near.

That's already disproven by the surface dwarfs in Kirkwall (Varric has a North American accent) and alienage Elves in Denerim.

Six voice actors is more work than anything. Bioware (And by extension EA) easily have the money for that. I don't know how much Nicholas Boulton and Jo Wyatt were paid for DAII but it can't be that much. Six voice actors maybe a million to two million dollars.

The 'screechy' Orlesians are intentionally so because they are primarily comedy characters. Especially the du Launcets. Silly du Launcets.

And as a Northerner, all the non-cockneys in the DAverse sound incredibly posh to me. Exceptionally punchable too. And I would be VERY surprised if the cockney accents were 100% genuine, (even actual cockneys can have their accents distorted after all).

Are there really cockney accents in DA? Can you think of a character offhand, I'd like to go have a listen.

Yeah, names are a bit of a problem though. As I remember, they were more common in Origins, but one that vaguely sticks in my head is the child from Athenril's Act 2(?) quest. Something about being involved in her smuggling ring or something. Can't remember if I recall that because it's a particularly bad or good example though.

Looked him up on the wiki. I think his name is Pryce and the quest was called Loose Ends.

Elves do have a language, it's just that they have forgotten almost all of it. An Inquisitor could be speaking common because that's the lanague that everyone he talks to knows.

Sorry I thought about the common thing and then edited my post above.  So above is my response to that.  If he is speaking accented common, then in my mind that means he/she knows a different language.

So you're telling me that the Dalish, who are the last vestige of independent Elves have been assimilated?  Similarly, if the Dalish wanted to be different, then they would reclaim or reinvent their language.  Look at the programs that are done to modernize and protect languages like Welsh or Ojibwa or Inuktitut.  I don't buy that the Dalish speak English because they don't know enough Elvish.

Edited to add: Why does everyone cater to player?  Seems funny that I get to visit the Dalish and they are nice enough to speak to me in "Common", instead of telling me to screw off and force me to learn some Dalish if I want to get something done or be accomodated.

Many of the native tribes today speak English as their primary language even though they still want to preserve their way of life on the preservation. It's a bit different, but when you are living alongside with a dominating culture for thousands of years, they would have an effect on your language unless you cut off completely with the outside world. Maybe it could be the case of knowing your native language but use English as their everyday conversation.

Thanks - had a quick look, he's definitely an example of the bad type - although I don't think he's trying for cockney. That's someone failing to disguise good pronounciation by dropping the occasional h. (Athenril would definitely be Affenril for a cockney!)

I was thinking of having another play with DAO sometime, I'll keep an ear out for them there.

More and more, I wish that they would just return to a silent protagonist.

I'm honestly not picky about the accent, as long as the voice and tone sounds nice.

For instance, Lady Isolde and Leliana both have a French accent (or what's supposed to be; not sure how authentic Isolde's is), but the former sounds very grating while the latter's voice is like a bell. By contrast, Hawke had the widely preferred British accent, but I found the tone and voice acting obnoxious for both genders. (Came across as too much of a caricature for me.)

Whatever the accent, as long as our character gets the cool or pretty version, I'm happy.

It might just be that. I do sometimes feel sorry for a VA when they try and do an accent and its just not quite right. Sometimes. But yeah, they might just be trying to do a fairly neutral accent with bad pronounciation and then just sounding vaguely cockney to my ears. I do want better accent representation though. We Brits have so many accents and about 90% I have never heard in any form of American television, some are barely heard in English television, (I always hate how the Doctor is always off having adventures in the bloody south, but hardly ever even visits us up north), so it could well be our media's fault for the Americans not really picking them up. I thought Merrill was a great step in the right direction, it's just a shame she was the only Welsh accent.

I LOVE Welsh accents.:wub::wub::wub:

I'll take a Ferelden accent over an Orlesian one any day of the year "shrugs"...So pretty much anything but Orlesian.

You thought Riordan had a bad accent?

I think his VA would be epic for an Orlesian PC, though perhaps better suited for an older character like Duncan.

Riordan was awesome. :wizard:

I think my problem is with the female "Orlesian" VAs. Since I only play female characters, that would make it really painful for me to suffer through a Leliana-like voice for my PC.

I have not heard a single Orlesian-accented female VA in either DA:O or DA2 that didn't make me want to kill them with fire. ("Who iz zees woman, Teeegan?" GAH!)

Unless they get Audrey Tautou to voice the female PC, I will cry if we get stuck with an Orlesian accent for the Inquisitor.

I've got nothing against the French, but hopefully the Inquisitor doesn't have a (strong) French accent. Actually, I really dislike the Orleasian one... How should I relate to 'my' character if it speaks with an accent I don't like at all?

I'd like Orlesian with an accent like Riordan's for the male Inquisitor. That's a marvellous voice.

I haven't liked any of the female Orlesian accents so far (Aura's was alright, but she's only a minor character so I didn't hear her much). Whilst Leliana's accent didn't sound hammy, she was too mouth-full-of-bees for me to like her voice. The female equivolent of Riordan would be lovely.

Generally I'd like something other than English/American. We have plenty of those already.

He should speak entirely in snappy one-liners and devastating puns.
