On my latest playthrough, I just noticed he was wrong/stupid all the time.
On finding Legion: "I've seen enough of these things on Eden Prime. Space it" (cash bounty from cerberus makes more sense than just "spacing it")
Thane: "I don't trust mercenaries." "He is doing this mission gratis, he might surprise you." "yeah, well, he might not"
After the collector ship, Miranda counsels that we should build the team. Jacob "We need the IFf sooner or later. Why wait?"
Duct mission "Sounds like a suicide mission. I volunteer."
And he doesn't want to wake up grunt either.

In every one of these cases, your success chance of the suicide mission would go down if you listen to his advice. Doing everything opposite of what Jacob says (waking Legion and Grunt, trusting Thane, don't send him through the ducts, waiting with the IFF) will simply lead to better results.

I'm pretty sure waiting with the IFF gets your crew killed.

The puzzling thing is how Bioware didn't follow on any of the stuff in Jacob's backstory. There was the relationship with Miranda, defecting to Cerberus, his father, animosity towards Thane. Yet on every point the conversations were cut short "I'm totally over it, next topic". It's not even an issue of ME3 but ME2, lots of interesting stuff about him went nowhere in ME2. Still like him a lot but yeah, kinda shows they didn't know what to do with him despite the fact that they had tons of material already in his backstory to follow up and make lots of interesting developement

With Jacob, I'm always left with the feeling that he thinks he's in the same class of badass as Shepard when he really isn't. Or, if he is, there's no evidence to prove it. Plus, talking to him in ME2 with femShep is just so painful I try to ignore him if at all possible. His comments after recruiting Thane and Tali also make me cringe....wish I could have told him to stuff it if he couldn't at least pretend to be nice.

I don't like the way he's portrayed. He has the stereotypical black guy lines, he talks in a seriously stereotypical black guy way. He is the token black guy of Cerberus. And out of three black people with a face that we meet, two of them are dishonest? Really? "I guess I'm more like my father than I thought."

QFT, but it was three. Maya Brooks wanted to kill the leader of the galactic war effort, and she wasn't even indoctrinated. Bioware must think Black people don't play videogames.

Most African-Americans speak normal English. Them being dark-skinned doesn't change this fact.

Jacob speaks like a stereotypical American.

I'm both black and American. He's steretyopical.

Same here. However, I don't have many problems with his speech, I have every problem with how Bioware made him act.

Your argument weakens when you use Maya (ignoring everyone else in Cerberus, including TIM) and ignore Anderson.

Jacob's a decent character. He's just unfortunately overshadowed by a ton of more interesting characters. It also doesn't help that BioWare seemed to have no clue how to write the "normal and grounded" party member, since they excel at doing everything but that when it comes to writing characters.

You can see in ME3 how they just gave up trying to do anything with his character. He has the lamest excuse not for joining you ( I need to protect a bunch of civilians who are already being guarded by Hackett's entire fleet), he accomplishes the least between ME2 and 3 of all your squadmates, the endpoint of his character journey is the least interesting of all your squadmates, and he's completely irrelevant in the mission centred around him (Brynn Cole is the character who the mission actually revolves around).
Hell, the devs seemed to go out of their way to sabotage his character as much as they could too. There was absolutely no need to have him cheat on FemShep when all it would take is changing two lines of dialogue to reaffirm their relationship.

The saddest part is that he had a backstory that could have been really interesting and served to flesh out the Alliance a lot more: he was a Corsair for the Alliance.
Conceptually, a badass pirate with his own ship and crew secretly sanctioned by the government for dirty work IN SPACE is awesome!
How the hell did it go so badly?

You meet a lot of dishonest people in Mass Effect.

What Jacob's father did was a minor offense compared to a lot of other characters.....

Indeed. Pretty much everything about him makes for an interesting character, heck he's even charming, they just never fleshed out anything and deliberately made him somewhat dishonest with Cole.

Jacob's a bit on the "normal" side, but I still like him. It helps to have a grounded character. He's more interesting than Kaidan, I guess, for stirring up things in the Alliance and having a slightly more rebellious attitude. Also, Kaidan looks like a metrosexual Elvis impersonator. Which is kind of annoying.

Look at this you will agree with that statement even more.

You know what would make Kaidan interesting though?

If he really WAS an Elvis impersonator. And had a Russian accent to boot. He needs more quirks. "Headaches" aren't really covering it.

Jacob is one of those characters you dislike at first but end up loving ironically because he's so unintentionally hilarious. Like Fenris in DA2.

Did you know he was a slave who hates magic?  Its all because he was enslaved to a Tevineter Magister.  Who was powerful mage who had slaves and was a mage.

Wait.. Fenris is way cooler. I don't see the comparison.

Plus, he's more useful gameplay wise. Jacob is hard to fit into a squad.

He also has an awesome theme song.

Yeah, Jacob is a terribly lame character. Even Vega is more interesting. Don't hate on Kaidan, I really like him actually.
