I've been watching the pre-alpha footage of Inquisition and a thought occured to me as I was watching a solitary character travel across the landscape and battle enemies. Is Inquisition implementing a Party in My Pocket approach?

For those not wishing to be lured in by the siren's call of TV Tropes, the link in question refers to an old-school approach to gaming wherein only the main character is seen on the overland map, with party members only showing up during combat and certain sections. Think Super Mario RPG or Final Fantasy VII.

Are they invisible? Are they being carried around in the main character's pockets? No one knows for sure, but it does cut down on development costs.

If Inquisition was going this route, would you agree with it?

i think they just didnt want to show any party members too soon? hence the mask wearing probably npc grey warden fella there too. my best guess is its just meant to be a demonstration of the mechanics of the game without spoiling anything.

Probably depends whether they can get the pathfinding on horseriding parties to not look stupid.

(Is that a party in your pocket, or...)

I thought the same thing when we first saw the guy on the horse. Does your party all get horses too? are they trailing behind you on foot or do they ust not show up like you say.

i am hoping they are just not showing party stuff yet or they just haven't programmed it into the game at the time that footage was taken.

I really hate it when the party only shows up in battles

Yikes no i don't want to see 'party in my pocket' approach. Party should be mounted on other horses behind.

I would highly doubt it. Mostly because things like ambient dialogue and party banter would be exceptionally weird if there was only one person in the party being shown.

Considering that we've been promised banter and party interaction, I doubt we'll see this.

They haven't shown any party anything yet so it makes me think they are holding it back untill it's as good as they can make it. (plus only three members have been confirmend and we know very little about vivienne so far)

And here I was, thinking the topic was about masturbation.

On topic:
Please no. Those times are over. In the past they did it to free some kilobytes of memory, but this should no longer be the issue with modern games.

That would be incredibly strange if they changed it to that.

It's pre-alpha for a reason. They probably haven't even finished voice acting for all the companions yet. It IS possible to choose no companions and wander around on your own in the previous two games, so I doubt they've done away with the companion system they've used for roughly a decade.

TV Tropes leads me to believe that party members in Star Wars The Old Republic disappear when the main character gets on a speedster. What if the same thing occurs when the main character rides a mount?

Mike said recently that it's possible they'll just vanish when you get on the horse (and then reappear when you get off it).

I'm not sure why they would choose that route for general exploration, though. I hope it doesn't end up that the party is only present during combat (and maybe in towns and interior areas).

Ugh now i have a lame Alanas Morrisette song in my head. It was bad enough having thread topic called 'Name of the game' and ABBA appearing like a long lost spectre.

What, why? I know it might sound very petty, but I don't like the sound of that at all.

If I had to guess, it's because of all the troubles associated with animating four horses/mounts, let alone one.

I understand that four people on four horses is probably a fair task to implement

but wouldnt it be cool if there's you and your three bros like riding horses cresting a hill and exploring stuff all cool and ****

man if they vanish when I get on a horse I may just never get on a horse part of the charm of party-based games to me is that my character is exploring with companions not just wandering around alone

Your tune may change if the environments are indeed as large as they keep promising.

Does this mean that the rest of the party is going to have to jog behind the Inquisitor banging coconut shells together?

I hope not and kind of doubt it, given that it would be a huge step backward in terms of party dynamics/interactions (which, regardless of other flaws, has always been one of the biggest strengths of all the Bioware games I've played to date, and why I, at least, keep coming back to them). I imagine what we're seeing is very carefully orchestrated not to give too much away in terms of other party members/seeing things that aren't ready for public consumption yet, and that we'll get more info on party dynamics and how that will work with the mount system later on as they polish it.
