The rest of the time, they'll be around because BioWare always gives you banters as you travel.

This isn't a thread about ghast companions? (who could conceivably fit in a pocket or saddle-bag)
I'm disappointed.
I'm still convinced that the ghast companion is a good idea, but based on the materials I've seen so far, I think that ship has sailed. Provided my bullet-ridden body isn't found in some alley somewhere before then, I'll renew my efforts when DA4 appears on the horizon.

But if you can freely trigger the horse, doesn't that make it of dubious use to place banter triggers in open areas?Maria Caliban wrote...

I could easily see a system where the party only appears in areas where the horse can't be summoned (presumably designated "town zones" and interior areas)—not coincidentally, the only places where you'd actually be guaranteed to trigger party banter.
I wouldn't like it, but I think it makes sense.

I really hope they show up somewhere in DA3.

I was thinking much the same. I will not be surprised at all if the "banter" trigger points are limited to interiors and town zones, along with the odd tightly-compacted outside area.

Mike said recently that it's possible they'll just vanish when you get on the horse (and then reappear when you get off it).
I'm not really sure why they're implementing horses. Personally, I like my mages to walk. Walking seems more mage-like, to me.

Because every second person on this forum keeps moaning about not being able to ride those smelly, ill-tempered beasts.

Then put them in a trolley or something, I don't care. Lol.
Horse and cart? I can dig it. This would be less awkward then having individual mounts for everyone. It should also have "Mako" painted on the side.
Alternatively, they could make it so the "dismount" animation has you do a "gather up!" wave and your companions ride up from (offscreen) and then dismount, leaving the horses in a little group. Basically the conceit is that when you're riding you "spread out" so they're mostly out of sight (thus solving animation/pathfinding issues), but when you want to investigate something you signal for them.
I kind of hope they segregate the outdoor-exploration-horse-riding areas from the smaller-contained-combat areas and don't have a ****load of overland random encounters. I hate those even on foot. When you have to get on and off a horse to deal with them (and the mounted combat is always craptastic so you DO have to get off the stupid horse) it's absurd.

Bumped because of Twitter thread discussion.
I would now add that in the most recent trailer, it appears that the Inquisitor is riding alone on his mount, with no companions in sight.

Just imagine:
Some bastard is going to rob you and you dismount and *plopp* three companions appear out of thin air.
Poor guy will have an heart attack.

I wouldn't mind the in my saddle bag thing because I'd probably only use the mounts for A-B runs, not while actively exploring the land.
Plus, that means more mount options for me.

Has everyone forgotten about last year's footage (the 30 min. thing)? Or is that not comparable somehow?

Bigger maps is part of the reason. Traversing large distances is can be annoying. Horses speed it up.

I suppose.
Keep in mind, I'm the guy who walked the trench run on Ilos. I like a slower pace of exploration.

Fair. I'm the opposite - I have no patience for doing anything slowly. It's why I like practice. Because it's a way of automating whatever it is I'm doing so I don't have to think very much about it.

Considering we were able to have companion mounts in NWN, it would be strange to not have them now. My only gripe then was how the distance to ride was often very short, so it was almost annoying to mount up, go that short distance, and then dismount when we arrived at whatever town or point of interest that came up.
In a large game with a wide open map, it would be awesome to see the countryside/wilderness/mountains pass by on horseback. If we can have bantering companions along for the ride.
