Before the British drove the French out of Canada the French did indeed own a good sized slice of the North American continent.

It wasn't a matter of capturing regions as much as having a few settlements here and there backed up by a large number of trading outposts.

That makes more sense. If they weren't kind to natives they could easily get rid of the French. The Natives had some Guns and Horses that time, and even without them their number was much more than the French.

I find Orleans => Berry => Burgundy to be the best surgical direction to cut France into small, manageable chunks.
