I think the 18th century map of North America (the one with English territories completely surrounded by France) is inaccurate. Did France capture all the regions between Quebec and Louisiana in curve shape?
Before the British drove the French out of Canada the French did indeed own a good sized slice of the North American continent.
It wasn't a matter of capturing regions as much as having a few settlements here and there backed up by a large number of trading outposts.
