So, this thought has been bugging me for quite some time now, ever since that tweet from Mark Darrah about "canon", which I have several problems with, lack of DLC and general continuity being the main one.

So, I propose, that we all attempt to put our collective heads together, write down information on what do we "know" from comic books, books, and other media related to Thedas and attempt to create some sort of "canonical" Warden.

If you are interested in joining this endeavor, please write your thoughts and sources if you have any new information (or just explain why you think your information is valid).
Bear in mind, all Origin stories did happen, all but one ended badly because Duncan was not there to save the Warden, so the Warden must not necessarily be Dalish just because Eluvian shows up in DA2, etc.

List of what we know (I will update this if new information shows up and this thread catches on)
  • Alistair is king (Dark Horse Comics)
  • Flemeth was fought and killed with Alistair being present (Dark Horse comics, he says he fought 3 dragons)
  • High Dragon at sacred Ashes was killed (Dark Horse comics, he says he fought 3 dragons)
  • Alistair was present for battle with the Archdemon (Dark Horse comics, he says he fought 3 dragons)
  • Alistair was not "hardened" (Dark Horse comics, he says he is pretty bad king)
  • Alistair met Isabela, and probably had an "encounter" with her (Dark Horse comics, it is mention that she is an old "acquaintance")
  • Sten survived (Dark Horse comics)
  • Leliana survived (Books/DA2, but is questionable, as she survives even her death)
  • Zevran survived (DH comics)

Bearing in mind that Gaider is going out of his way to establish that there is no true "Canon", it seems that DA:I's assumption until corrected by an import is that the plot of Origins followed the Martyr preset and that Hawke was a mage who sided with the mages. Unless that contradicts this, I think it's probably what happened in the comics. If it does, that's probably on purpose to avoid there being any one canon.

The warden is a female elf!! Reasons:

- In the original DAO companions, every race/gender combo in the party is accounted for except female elf!!! (with Shale being the femdwarf) Therefore she just clicks! ^.^

- In Awakening while counting the warden, the party consists of two male humans, two female elves, a male and female dwarf, and a male fade spirit, she clicks there too!!

- In GoA she's just the oddball femelf of the group, still clicks. Witch Hunt is the only one she doesn't click with.

- The default warden for Inquisition is a female Dalish elf, therefore they agree with me. They were simply wrong about her being Dalish! ^.^ And dieing!

"Unhardened" Alistair can't have an "encounter" with Isabela. (Insert off-colour joke here.)

I'm going to say that Alistair was "hardened" and he's just being self-deprecating as usual. Even with him both Hardened and King imported to DA2, he introduces himself to Hawke as Alistair first, before remembering to add "Oh, er, King of Ferelden".

Since in Origins, he can only have an encounter with Isabela whilst romancing a female Warden and engaging in a threesome, the Bioware Default Warden being a woman has another point in her favour.

Thanks about the corrections about Alistair "hardened" status. I have to admit, I never played with doing that.

Also, yes, I do know there is no "canon", but still, I would love to create something as close to having a list "canon" choices, because as I have said, the Martyr preset (which we can use for the "big" choices) has some serious problems regarding any continuity with DLCs, because Martyr dies at the end (so technically no Awakening, even though it somehow has these choices in import, and no during or post game DLCs, which seems like a huge shame)

Another tidbit I got from rereading DH comics
Zevran is alive, so he did not attempt the second assassination on Warden

The Warden dying doesn't cancel Awakenings, it just mandates the use of an Orlesian Warden.

I don't know about this, default is really just the developers way of telling you that you should have played the earlier games. Default DAII isn't that bad, considering that it isn't in Feredlan except for the first two minutes, but playing something like ME with default was awful. Inquisition will be largely affected by DAII, so I don't know if going default would be a good idea.

I wouldn't take any of that "canon" stuff seriously except Sten and Leiliana alive and Alistair king, because those are the only things consistent with everything else, especially given Gaider's insistence on not wanting a "true" canon.

Also Alistair saying he's a bad king is much more likely to his insecurity/humbleness than being unhardened.
