GameFAQs is hosting a video game character tournament that started over a month ago. Each match is decided by a popularity poll. A round 3 match is set to begin on 9/2 at midnight PST and last for the whole day between Link, Draven (from League of Legends), and Commander Shepard.
Historically, Link always wins these contests. It's the 9th time GameFAQs has run such a contest over the last 11 years, and Link won 7 times. He lost once to a joke rally and once to Cloud in 2003. Obviously he would be the prohibitive favorite, except for one thing: Reddit.
Last round, reddit rallied behind Draven and he won his match by a ridiculous number of votes -- more votes than had been registered for all 3 participants in any previous match. If we see a repeat performance, then reddit will essentially take over the contest in favor of a character that most gamefaqs players have never even heard of, even if he is from a game that is supposedly the most played around the world right now. Naturally, Link fans are already trying to mount a counter-rally, but it's pretty hard for them to compete when there isn't any dependable place they can go to stage this rally.
However, I say we can show both groups at the same time. Nobody's paying *ANY* attention to the fact that Shepard is in the poll as well. Forget Link, forget Draven. Let's get Shepard to win this poll and leave the egg on everybody's face. At the very least, let's try to make sure Shepard doesn't get embarrassed to the tune of under 5%, but with some creative rallying (including a few topics on appropriate sub-reddits to use Draven's vote source against him,) I think Shepard can legitimately win this poll. Let's make it happen!
Spread the word wherever you think you'll find fans that are more likely to support Shepard over a Nintendo icon (or wherever Draven fans come from.) This is going to be an ugly one. It'll take all the tech and biotics out there to make it happen, so pull out the big guns and help find people who will vote. It only takes as long as going to www.gamefaqs.com, clicking a radio button, and submitting.
BTW, three other ME squadmates are/were in the tournament. Garrus and Mordin already lost, but Wrex is up on Friday, 9/30, in the second half of the day (noon to midnight).
Vote for Shepard on 9/2

Draven is a League of Legends character.
To be honest though, Shep shouldn't really be there. He/she is not a really a character but rather a blank slate for the player to project themselves into.

I wouldn't call Shepard a 'blank slate.' He or she has a predefined back story, and while the player helps determine Shepard's personality, it is only partially defined by the player.
An example of a blank slate protagonist in an RPG is the hero of any Elder Scrolls game.

Why would I care about an Internet popularity contest on a site I don't even visit?

Their reaction and personality is still largely defined by the player, well for the most part. Really the closest we have for a defining character moment is the line "I should go."Han Shot First wrote...
