This. Oh so much this.

It made me want to cry almost as much as the voice acting for FemHawke did. I mean seriously.

Welsh and Irish sound different. And the Dalish elves are supposed to sound WELSH. Dear god. Bioware need to stop letting American VAs approximate accents. They aren't even good irish accents - just generic "oh hey top o' tha mornin'!" accents.
Even Donnelly from ME had a horrible accent. As a Scotsman it hugely offended me at how terrible that sh*t was.

EDIT:
Before anyone gets on at me about how Donnelly wasn't that bad. To an american or non english speaker it might have been a good enough approximation of "scottish" in the way that James Doohan did "scottish" for Scotty to someone from the UK it would be immediately noticably bad.

Same with the Dalish elves speaking with inexplicable irish accents when they are supposed to sound welshish.

It would be like a Brit trying to do an "canadian" accent and sounding distinctly "texan". Yeah the accents are from neighbouring countries but they aren't the same thing.

Merrill's VA in DA2 is Welsh, though. The VA for her in DAO was American. I assume you're talking about her American VA, unless you don't think her Welsh VA did a good job.

I'm American, though I lived in England for 6 years and knew Scotts and Welsh people, so I can appreciate a proper VA who's actually from that area, I'm just curious which version of Merrill you mean. Or do you mean all the other elves aside from her, which I can't see them hiring a vast array of people that actually have that accent naturally- unfortunately.

Photoshopped the images in colour. Yes they aren't perfect but they may give you a better idea of how they will look in game.

Definitely liking them so far. :)

Apparently I'm in the minority that liked the elves in DA2 even though there were some bad, cases but still liked how different they were.

I think you misread me lol.

Eve Myles is a fantastic VA. I actually loved her in this game, as much as I hated Merrill, I couldn't deny that her VA did a sterling job. I also liked her DAO VA - but I felt like Merill in DAO was a different person from Merrill in DA2.

I was indeed refering to all the inexplicable irish accents around her.

If they couldn't put the effort or time in to get decent VAs for the dalish characters then they shouldn't have changed the dalish accents to sound welsh; they should have just left them generic american. I know I am being harsh here but honestly I let so much slide in DA2 because of the time constraints issue that I just find with this I just can't because I am a native Celt (I am a Scot) I find it really grating on my ears.

Maybe is just me...but aren't the irises of the Elf almost shiny? can't be sure since the image is gray, but when I look at all the race together, It seems like the Elf have brighter eyes. Maybe is just me.

(sigh) And we're back to pointy-eared humans again. I liked the DA2 elves because they looked like a different race, unique and not human. OK, so some of them weren't gorgeous, but what do you expect? Human standards of beauty shouldn't apply to a non-human race. But it doesn't matter. People raged, and they got their way. End of story. Please forgive me if I observe my own little moment of silence for a design that was not human, but still attractive, at least in my eyes.

I've not heard anything offical on this, but I thought Merrill's Welsh accent was deliberate, as she was brought into her Clan as the first.  So it makes sense that her clan would be Irish and she'd be Welsh.

Why must they look mutated in order to not look human?

False. The Sabrae Clan is supposed to sound Irish. Merrill sounds Welsh because she's from a different clan. She was brought into the Sabrae as a child. To answer why she didn't adopt the new accent of her new clan, Merrill tells Hawke that Marethari kept her separate from the others to study Keeper lore, and that she was largely alone growing up.

It's not stated, but I think the underlying implication is that the Dalish are so culturally isolated, even from each other, that every or most clans develop their own accent and dialect over the years. I actually think it's a brilliant idea, and clears up the head scratcher of why such highly reclusive elves have the exact same accent as city elves, when the two groups have almost never come into contact with each other over the last several centuries.

I can also understand the logic of giving them Gaelic and Welsh accents, since they sound so beautiful and melodic to many American ears (mine included), which fits with how the Dalish are supposed to be ethereally beautiful and graceful. (Even if their personalities better match hideous and temperamental hunchbacks.) With that said, I wouldn't mind them scaling it down for future games the same way they scaled down the new elf designs.

I too am really looking forward to learning more about their culture and plight, and what their future holds.  Mr. Laidlaw mentioned in the "playable races" GI video that befriending elven servants, etc., as a brother or sister will be a unique experience...and hopefully a positive one.  I'm looking forward to that opportunity.

I know, right? I'm looking forward to this too! <3

I loved being able to approach the elves as a brother or sister in DA:O, but unfortunately, outside of the Origins, most were too scared or busy to reciprocate. For example, Berwick says words to the effect of, "Look, just because you're an elf doesn't mean we have to be friends." The elven servant in Arl Eamon's castle begs to be allowed to get back to work since she'll be punished for dawdling.

If we get to share a sense of kinship with elven servants and passerby's, I would be so happy! (The elves' strong sense of kinship and community is one of the things I love best about them; particularly city elves!)

That's a good point.  Hopefully we'll get more opportunities for that kind of immersion with all the race options, and the encounters we have will be able to develop more fully.  I'm hopeful that the mention of running into elven enclaves and being welcomed more easily into their confidence will enhance this concept.  I'd really like, for example, to visit the Denerim alienage again if possible, and talk to my Tabris' kin about how they're making out after the Blight.

I just hope that our ability to improve the lot of the elves won't just break down into the Dalish supremacy fetichizing that happens so often on this forum. The City Elves have a unique and distinct culture, and equal treatment for the elves and freedom from the alienages means more than just forcible cultural assimilation into the Dalish.

I agree so much. So many people seem to feel like "elven freedom" means just getting the Dalish the kingdom and society that they envision, and the city elves just assimilating to that vision. But, let's face it:

A) The city elves out-number the Dalish by at least a hundred to one. B) The city elves have been living in sedentary societies and hierarchies for centuries, whereas the Dalish have been living in small hunter-gatherer tribes, so the city elves' experience with being part of a sedentary society would be invaluable in building and maintaining one. C) The city elves are used to enduring hardship whereas the Dalish are used to running from or shooting at it, so when the hardships of building and maintaining their kingdom arises (and you know it will), the city elves' coping methods will be invaluable. D) Whether they like it or not, humans outnumber elves and have to respect or approve of their kingdom in order to keep it, so maintaining diplomatic relations with humans will be essential. Between the two cultures, city elves are used to dealing with and talking to humans, so they'll be invaluable as ambassadors and diplomats.

What's more, like you said, I think the city elves have great cultural merits that I think would be tragic to lose to the Dalish. Among other things, because of the on-going prejudice they receive for their heritage, I think the city elves have a stronger sense of community, kinship, appreciation of being elven (I know the Dalish value it, but I think the elves appreciate it), and (on average) more acceptance of cultural and background differences. In most Alienages, there seems to be a sense of "Hey, come on in. We're all elves here," as opposed to "Any elf not like us is a flat-ear, no better than humans," or "If you join us, you have to be just like us," or "So, you finally want to learn to be a real elf, eh?"

I want the elves to get freedom more than I can say, but I don't want the city elves to completely lose their cultural identity either. =(

Excellent points.  I find the cultural differences between city and Dalish elves fascinating.  If changes can be made to their situation in some fashion, I'd like for nuances like these to remain.

Orana just can't get a break.  First she's a slave, then, her pic is in every DA2 ugly elf post.  Hopefully she gets a DA:I remake and cameo as compensation.

I think it's mostly because of her terrible makeup. Purple lips and over done eye shadow don't look good. Her being really gaunt is understandable as she was a slave so most likely under fed.
