I'm so frustrated.
I bought Mass Effect 1 for PC from Origin (the digital version) two days ago, and I still didn't get it to launch.
When I put "play" from the Origin client, it opens a little window that says "Launching Mass Effect" and that window closes and nothing happens.
I downloaded the patch 1.02 and it says "Mass Effect is not found" even though I'm running the patch from the directory where the game is installed.
I tried running the game in compatibility mode for Windows XP service pack 3 and launching MassEffect.exe as administrator. I restarted the computer and tried again. I launched the Origin client as administrator. I closed the Origin client and of course also close the program from the tray and tried again. I tried all of those steps but with Windows 7 compatibility. I uninstalled the game and installed again, two times. I updated all my video drivers. I installed the version of DirectX that comes in the Mass Effect folder because yet another site suggested that. I downloaded a dll that was designed for Skyrim but some other users said that it was useful for Mass Effect also. I tried changing the settings from MassEffectConfig.exe to run the game in a window (obviously I can't change the settings in game because the game won't launch whatsoever, not even the presentation screen). Basically I tried other things that I've seen on forums here in Bioware, in EA or in Steam, I don't remember what else I tried but I've been trying to solve this issue following step by step what worked for other users, but for me, the game is totally laughing in my face. My computer can totally run the game because I'm running Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 without problems whatsoever.
If anyone could help me I'd be very grateful.

There is now one single place to discuss ME-1 difficulties like yours. The AHQ forums. For actual assistance from official techs, if you had qualified, that is on EA's Help Center.

However, you do not quality. You have no valid video device.

"Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 6 series (6800GT or better: G.205, 210, 310, 520, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 7600 GS, 8200, 8300, 8400 GS, 8500, 9100, 9200, & 9300 are below minimum system requirements)
ATI Radeon X1650 XT or better (X1050, X1300, X1300 Pro, *X1550*, HD 2400, HD 3100, HD 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, HD 4250, HD 4270, HD 4350, HD 4550, and ("probably") HD 5450 are below minimum system requirements) no video device with Intel's name on it is supported in any way, shape, or form.

(Varying amounts of VRAM beyond 256 have no detectable influence)"

I know that I should have a video card, but I'm playing from a notebook and like I said I can play Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 without problems with this very same notebook, so Mass Effect, which is an older game, should run too...

Nope. Mass Effect knows that your bad excuse is really a bad excuse. The other two were purposely crippled. adding a special extra low range of settngs so that people with crap for video could pretend they were getting everything that the game offered (although officially, no such junk gets supported, as per the system requirements).

PC MINIMUM System Requirements
OS = Windows XP SP3 / Windows Vista SP1 / Windows 7
Processor = 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent AMD CPU
Memory = 1 GB RAM for Windows XP / 2 GB RAM for Windows Vista and Windows 7
Hard Drive = 15 GB
DVD ROM = 1x Speed (??)
Sound Card = DirectX 9.0c compatible
Direct X = DirectX 9.0c August 2008 (included)
Input = Keyboard / Mouse
Video Card = 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support). Supported Chipsets: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater; ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce 7300, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, and 9300; ATI Radeon HD3200, and HD4350 are below minimum system requirements. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required. Intel and S3 video cards are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2.

But if it was the video card, shouldn't the game give me an error message regarding the video card or crash after it loaded? It doesn't even load, that's what I'm saying, and when I try to apply the patch I get a message saying that Mass Effect is not even installed!
