Bioware, would you be so kind to reveal at some point what the possible backgrounds for the human inquisitor where?
If not, is that because:
1)Would they spoil too much of the story of DA:I?
2)Or were they simply not developed enough at the point you got green light for the multiple races?

I doubt they will. If they do, people will inevitably be all, "Why didn't we get this!!!????"

Granted, they'll do that anyway.

I think it likely that they weren't fully developed.

Basically the information we have so far suggests that there was originally to be at least 6 backgrounds.

The Spy, Rogue

The Mercenary, Rogue or Warrior

The Chevalier, Warrior

The Apostate, Mage

The Convict, Rogue or Warrior

The Apprentice, Mage

While I am happy other people got their wish and got elves and dwarves back I can't help but feel like something like this would be more fun for ME PERSONALLY. I tend to play humans 90% of the time in RPGs, and I have no real interest in playing an elf or a dwarf (Kossith could possibly change my mind however).

Oh well, I'm pretty sure Bioware will not tell us more about these backgrounds (at least not until way after DA:I is released, simply because peope will rant about what 'could have been'. I kind of hope we can sort of piece our own background together through dialogue however. Something like:

Companion: "Who are you anyway to lead the Inquisition?"

Inquisitor (warrior example):

Option 1 "I am ser [name], the son of the Duke of Valais and knighted chevalier of Orlais. I led the charge against bandits that pillaged the countryside." (Chevalier)
Option 2 "I've been a sword for hire for more than decade and I've ended more lives than you can imagine. Mercenary, sellsword, call me whatever you want as long as the gold is good." (Mercenary)
Option 3 "I've been many things in my life, and I've seen places and things you could never dream of. The only things you need no know is I'm the best at what I do." (Convict... maybe)
Option 4 "Mind your own bussiness." (Enigma/Leave things open/Headcanon your own background)

I hope DA:I gives us back the option to flesh out our companion more than in DA2. While I likes Hawke for what he was (a Dragon Age version of Shepard), I'd very much like to establish a custom background for my character, even if it has no real gameplay meaning. I was watching a playthrough of the city elf Origin on youtube last night and one thing I really enjoyed and had almost forgotten was how even though you ended up at the same place you could have two very different elves in terms of personality and view on life.

How do we know that they axed the backgrounds?

I don't have a link, but I'm pretty sure a developer (I think it was Mr. Gaider) said that they scrapped the backgrounds because they could now focus on races instead. So now each race will be a 'background' instead.

Crowe is speculating. It doesn't appear anywhere.

Herr Uhl wrote...

David said so. More specifically, he said you can't pick you background independent of your race.

He also said he wouldn't be revealing what they originally planned because people tend to imagine some perfect version of it.

I didn't even hear that there were six backgrounds, let alone ones that specific.

Like everyone has said, the backgrounds have now been superseded by the class/race choices. They couldn't do reactivity to race selection *and* backgrounds at the same time, supposedly.

(I assume that the cost of fully voice acting an elf/dwarf Inquisitor is vastly more expensive than doing backgrounds for a human character. Maybe more expensive, relatively, than the origin stories in Origins, too.)

I know those are examples, but those backgrounds sound awesome

I would love to RP a bitter, jaded mercenary, or an apostate

Pretty much this.
I was looking forward to the backgrounds because a character's history is important for their personality and now it's just kinda...yay...I can...play an elf...or a dwarf...which I'm not really interested in...and my history will depend solely on my race...yaaaay...

I mean, good for those who value race selection above all else (though I personally never understood it), but the lack of backgrounds is a a bit of a disappointment for me. *shrug*

But god, am I glad there won't be any more bit**ing about the lack of race selection.

Neither have I.

That being said, if the above is something that was actually planned at some point I don't think we can discard it yet. Consider now that with multiple races, the 'race' of the character is linked to that character's background. They might have kept one of the above (or a couple of the above) as the background for the human Inquisitor.

They may have even kept  a couple of the above for the non human backgrounds. For example the elf might be a mercenary, or the dwarf might be a convict, ect, ect.

I'm not sure what you think that word means, but speculating wasn't what Caliban did there.

Also, as Lukas Kristjanson pointed out in this thread in the off-topic forum, there is at least one other reason that they might not share the information with us. The ideas might be used for something else later. Likely in a different form, but the same basis. His point seemed to be that if you want to ask "what might've been," you'd better get used to disappointment.

Speculate, to form a theory without evidence, I am pretty sure I know what speculate means, do you? Well of course you do now as I just told you, however did you make that post operating under a different definition of speculate?

I'm sorry, but you sound terribly hostile. All anyone is saying is that the background options you posted are just made up by you, not by Bioware. It's not a personal attack against you or your theory.

And I was merely educating our good friend on the meaning of speculate, I apologise if I sound hostile though I cant imagine why I would come off as such as all I have been doing is sharing information.

Perhaps the poster overlooked that you were actually correcting Maria's tense, rather than stating that Maria was speculating.

For instance, it IS possible to read your post as a commentary that "Speculated Maria" was a description of Maria's comment. Like writing prose in a book:

"Crowe is speculating," speculated Maria.

Regardless.... We're off topic.

That would have been so cool from a reactivity perspective. I would give races up for this because of the replay value at stake.

Or it could have been like ME's and barely relevant we'll never know.

That would've been my guess. Having a background to choose from is cool, but it would probably have been treated like the ones in ME. If they do backgrounds, I want it to have some kind of influence on how my game. They can do that easier with races. Let's hope that happens.
