So, the new designs for the elf (and dwarf) in DA:I and I am curious to hear how others feel about it.

I know that a lot of folks were unpleased with the redesign elves (and to a lesser extend, qunari) went through in DAII.  I was not among that number.  I thought that the DAII elves (and darkspawn, actually) were an excellent move because they looked like a distinct race rather than just shorter humans with pointy ears.  Everything from their gait to their physiognomy pointed to something clearly not human.

With what we've seen so far (and it's admittedly little), I fear that the DAI elves are a step backwards.  It appears (emphasis on appears) that there's very little difference between the elves and humans aside from the ears yet again. But I'm wondering if my view is in the minority on BSN (and I suspect it is) or not and, if so, why the backward step in racial design is a good thing to some.

Maybe the art team did not fully like the elven design and want something else, this is a new team from DA2 art team. Just wait and see what they look like in game. You might still like it.

The DA2 design of Elves could be improved, I know there was more space between the races in being humanoid rather than human-looking, especially the Kossith. Elves will still have the narrow face feature, I just feel like the body frame could do with some tinkering with.

Look at the bone structure of the head in the different pictures. Elves are distinct. What they aren't any more is ugly. I guess some might see that alone as becoming too human again, but I think it's a vast improvement over DA2's design.

Well, that's two sides of the same medal right here. Some people didn't like the change back then, some people will not like the coming change.

I'd rather wait until we get some conclusive images on the design before I go expressing my displeasure.

I agree that making elves look like skinny humans is a step backwards, but it's not a big deal for me.

If you mean distinct as in looking like someone had beaten their face in with a shovel, then yes, the elves were very distinct.

I liked that the elves in DA 2 looked so different as well.

However, I'm gonna wait and see what the elves of DA:I look like in-game before I pass any kind of judgement.

To me the DA:I elves looks pretty great so far. It is somewhere in between the 'basically just small humans with pointy ears' of Origins and the 'na'vi floppy ears aliens' of DA2. I really like it, and that's coming from someone who isn't that big of a fan of elves in general.

I really hope they keep the Qunari design from DA2 however, it was leaps and bounds better than the 'large humans with pretty colored eyes' in Origins.

I would like something a more like the DA 2 elves.

But I'm mostly indifferent to this while people who are passionate about elves and the way elves look seem to prefer the DA:O and DA 3 look. Though... I don't really get why one would be passionate about the way elves look.

So long as the elves wear shoes this time around.

I think it would have been interesting if DA had, from the get-go, gone with something like the DA2 look for elves (or something similarly strange-looking), and then had the in-universe perspective among the people of Thedas be that elves were, in fact, ugly rather than beautiful. Cultural standards of beauty tend to reflect the interests of the more privileged social groups, so it stands to reason that the people who are stereotyped as being associated with violence and poverty would also be regarded as having the less desirable physical features. Also, it would make the elves-as-oppressed minority angle a better challenge to the player's commitment to liberal values like equality and toleration. After all, it's much easier to be sympathetic to beautiful natives (*cough* Avatar *cough*) than to folks you find to be rather homely.

Oh I liked the darkspawn in DAO. Wish that would come back but they won't.

I like the Elves so far in DAI. They are prettier. Probably because they are more human.

Most da2 elves were freakin hideous. DAO were distincitve enough that i could tell the difference from humans. DAI elves massive improvement.

They should try to emphasize their slender, denser musculature and lean looks as a race a bit more, that's pretty much it. The DAO dwarves looked a bit too much like they were barely touched clay balls, so they have evolved rather well. Though, what do i know.

They can tweak the features and proportions all they want but it's not fooling anyone, an elf's and elf and that's a basically pointy-eared human, I don't know why they suddenly became so embarrassed they tried to hide that.

Personally I think that, if they really wanted to set themselves apart from other settings, they should never have used elves in the first place. Since they have, they might as well go with the least contentious design and set themselves apart somewhere else.

I liked the DA2 elves, saw nothing wrong about them. I guess it comes with the general DA2 hate, it's like "we hate this game. What else can we hate about it?" Or, it's just perspective, maybe both. Who knows.

It might or might not be a step backward, but it's definitely going towards the 'norm.' Which is fine, I'm fairly indifferent about that, and if it means less people arguing, then by all means! Go ahead.

DA2 elves weren't supposed to be ugly , if you can see the concept art ...Big eyes , nose like greek statue , frail looking.
Some elves were good looking , some weren't .

I kind of like their noses , it seems they keep the greek statue nose for DA3 .
Their eyes are more human like , probably a good thing because it could work with some female (doe eyes) but mostly it felt a bit alien.

I don't really care about elves , but in DA2 the good ones were more "kawaii" than beautiful.

I like the DAI design. The design in DA2 made me want to hate elves for no real reason.

Well, I have mixed feelings about the DA2 redesign.

On one hand, I agree with the idea of making the elves look more distinct from humans. Unfortunately, many of the elves in DA2 just looked freaky. Merrill and Fenris did not, so it seems like more effort on the character models could make them look okay and still distinct.

I actually like the redesign--they look much better to me. However, I don't want to lose the distinctness, and I don't think we have to. One of the developers mentioned this in reference to the new character models for elves, but elves are shorter and slimmer than humans. If this is pronounced enough, I think it will help differentiate them.

I also hope the elves get shoes this time around because that change was just silly.

I'd wager the expalanation starts with starts with F and rhymes with "tish".

I got the impression that the elf design for DA:I (especially the female version they showed) was still along the lines of the DA2 redesign, but more polished. That was the big problem in DA2 I think. The only elves that looked finished were Fenris and Merrill and occasionally there was a decent-looking side character as well, but those were very rare. (The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are Athenril and Lia)

Anyways, I hope that with the extended development time all elves will get the necessary time to make them look not-hideous. I liked the intent behind DA2's redesign, but in most cases the execution was very poor.

I love the new look of the elves of DA:I.
