Look at the bone structure of the head in the different pictures. Elves are distinct. What they aren't any more is ugly. I guess some might see that alone as becoming too human again, but I think it's a vast improvement over DA2's design.
i fully agree with this. the point of the redesign for inquisition is to make them look somewhat in the middle of the origins and dragon age 2 design, which i support. i think most people can agree that the elves from dragon age 2 were a bit over the top..

I understand why Bioware wanted to give elves a more distinct look and move away from the whole 'humans with pointy ears' thing that was repeatedly brought up. The thing is, appearance wise, elves are essentially humans with pointy ears when talking about traditional sources. They're just like us with certain aspects that make them more majestic and alien. These aspects are usually related moreso to their behaviours and demeanour.
I recall in one of the early dev diaries for Origins that Bioware stated that they wanted to bring these recognisable, fantasy archetypes into their world and then subvert our expectations of them. They've succeeded in that endeavour for the most part. Considering that they wanted to bring these recognisable groups into the game, there was no need for the drastic redesign that occured in DA2. They really could have just continued with their original approach that was presented in their early videos.

I think it would have been interesting if DA had, from the get-go, gone with something like the DA2 look for elves (or something similarly strange-looking), and then had the in-universe perspective among the people of Thedas be that elves were, in fact, ugly rather than beautiful. Cultural standards of beauty tend to reflect the interests of the more privileged social groups, so it stands to reason that the people who are stereotyped as being associated with violence and poverty would also be regarded as having the less desirable physical features. Also, it would make the elves-as-oppressed minority angle a better challenge to the player's commitment to liberal values like equality and toleration. After all, it's much easier to be sympathetic to beautiful natives (*cough* Avatar *cough*) than to folks you find to be rather homely.
There have always been people who find the exotic attractive, regardless of society's conception of attractive. In The Stolen Throne, Maric realizes why some people are attracted to elves, with their alien eyes (by alien I mean strange.) By that I infer that not everyone felt that way.

Their new design for elves have guarenteed a pre-order from me because it shows that they are learning, they are responding to legitimate criticism and therefore, if they carry this through other aspects, this game just might be the best of the three.

they should go back to DAO style or J. R. R. Tolkien style.
and like others have said I want them to use shoes.

that being said i dont quite get the whining over the elves not wearing shoes. it makes sense for the dalish at least, cultural things, etc.

Interesting. I haven't read The Stolen Throne myself (or any of the expanded universe material), but my understanding was that elves are widely considered attractive in Thedas. I remember Zevran saying something about this being the reason why the Antivan Crows heavily recruit elves, for instance.

And, no, contrary to some they weren't all ugly (just because you didn't like the design or how Zevran looked, don't be myopic). Some were unattractive, yes; but that should go for any race with humanoid characteristics. Honestly, it makes less sense for them to be a race of impossibly beautiful people (ala Tolkien) and have them be depicted as often reviled second class citizens.
Were they a race of perfect beauty or incredibly similar to humans except with pointed ears, having humans ostracize them at every turn seems far less logical in the context of the Dragon Age Universe. The Dragon Age 2 design gave their stance in human society and the world far more substance and believability.

The elves' redesign looks like a solid fusion of the first two games, distinct but appealing. I approve.

Though... I don't really get why one would be passionate about the way elves look.
Because we want to play an elf in DAI and if they look like DA2 elf's then no person will play them. I don't play ugly bones.
