Heck no - I think their design is a vast improvement over the DA2 elves.
Very much agree with this. Feel the new design is a huge improvement!

Despite some of the complaints that elves looked "like humans with pointy ears" in Origins, I think that's actually what most people want. I actually think that's what makes elves so popular. They're basically human, so they're familiar, but they have just a little bit of them (their ears) that set them apart so that people can feel they're still playing/interested in something different and/or less boring. That's my theory for the unpopularity of dwarves. Even though dwarves can have human-like faces, their bodies are so different that no amount of height (not that dwarves are that short) could make them look human. Elves? If they seem too different, just let their hair down. Instant human. DAII's elves could never pass for humans, and in a society that's supposed to be portrayed as racist, that seems like a really good thing. The new elf design is a definite step backward.
It's especially baffling that whenever DAII's elves are criticized for being "ugly" or whatever, there are only a few very specific examples brought up. To me, that seems to imply that the rest of them were okay.
Orana is usually brought up, but that's unfair. The only thing weird about her is her make up. Pol? I'm pretty sure any ugliness there could be solved by just lowering his face on his head by a small amount. It's not fair to point out the background NPCs that are never interacted with either, as they're clearly low quality and not intended for scrutiny. Not that all elves need to be attractive. Still, I've never seen anyone complain about Fenris, aside from "animu elf" claims. I thought said claims were more about coloring (white hair) and temperament. There also aren't complaints about Merrill. Not about Orsino, Athenril, or Marethari. Not Tomwise. (Edit: Hahaha, I see this thread is proving me wrong on who is complained about. Too bad.)
I wish they'd shift elves back toward DAII's design. They look nice. And kind of like English Bull Terriers (in a good way). Though, is it just me or did they all seem to have the same green eyes?

BTW, I really, really appreciatte this step forward. The redesign in DA2 was a clear step backward. Those weird giant neck-giant nose weirdos were extremely unpleasant to look at. Merril, Marethari, the giraffe elf a.k.a
Now, if they are able to come up with something to fix the monkey darkspawn, I'l be happy

If they didn't want humans with pointy ears, they shouldn't have called them elves and created a new species. If you're going to call them elves, making them anything other than what we already have as the archetype for elves doesn't really serve any purpose (though there have elves like the ones in DA2).
I know! It'd be like making the elves an impovrished slave race rushing toward extinction and irrelevancy in a human dominated world.

Well, that doesn't look so bad. Would prefer to see an actual screenshot from the game though.

If something isn't broken then don't fix it.You may like DA2's elves but they went against the lore of elves being attractive to humans and having human features.Chagrinned Goat wrote...
I love DAII's elves. Their redesign is the one thing I'm really disappointed about in Inquisition so far. I know the idea was to mix the designs from the previous two games, but they really leaned too far toward Origins' look. In the race examples we've seen, the facial features between the humans and elves are identical.

And nobody ever complains about dwarves and how they need to be altered because they are "short and stocky humans".hhh89 wrote...
@Chagrinned Goat: you talk about elves being similar to human, when the female dwarf concept (your own avatar) is more similar to a human than the female elf?

A significant number of DA:O's elves went against the lore of being attractive to humans, and Merril seems to do fine for herself.

I'm just saying if people want Bioware to alter the elves because they look "too human",then they better alter the dwarves as well because otherwise it would be hypocritical. In Exile wrote...

Because they weren't attractive to us, the players, even if they were "supposedly" attractive in-game. That's your argument about the DA2 elves, right? Because no one in-game says they're suddenly unattractive to humans.
So you're obviously arguing that the DA2 redesign meant that elves weren't attractive anymore to the players, and that somehow broke the lore.

Seriously, it's driving me crazy. Elves are an established fantasy race with rather established fantasy features within our collective consciousness, and yet people keep whining that they don't look like a completely new race? They aren't a completely new race, yet people keep demanding to re-invent the wheel?
What's more, the same people that call for re-invented elf designs never once comment on the dwarves. Thedas dwarves just look like short and stout humans, but I have seen not one thread complaining about how dwarves look too similar to humans or past fantasy dwarves in my year and a half of lurking on this website.
The elves look fine. They have different racial features humans, but they don't look like bug-eyed aliens. Let it go.

My point was that the dwarves don't look human like the DA:O elves looked human, especially in terms of their body proportions. So complaining that they look "too" human is not as likely. My complaint is that they don't look human enough in terms of their proportions. They just look like squished humans.

I can't help but find your post a little ironic, since I get the feeling you have the same sentiment about the same issue, you just insist that elves should look the other way. Letting it go would mean not caring how they end up looking. Caring very strongly that they have to look a certain way or they're not worthy of the name "elf" in the fantasy genre is... well, a little too focused on the issue.

Well, then you're just completely wrong, unless you can give me one example in DA2 where any human character said this?
DA:O's elves are attractive to both the players and the people of Thedas so they don't go against the lore unlike the DA2 elves.
Where did you get this survey? I can't wait for you to post all that meta-data that lets you draw this conclusion instead of making it up out of thin air.
