There is no knowledge presented in the games yet about other races in unions humans or among the other races.
It will be interesting to see how it evolves in the games.

I know that discrimination is about more than just appearance, but with comments in-game and in the extended canon hinting that being attracted to elves is considered some kind of unusual fetish and hearing them described as 'alien' on occasion it sounded like the descrimination was at least partially due to their appearance.
When are they ever described as "alien"? I've played DA:O forwards and backwards and skimmed every elf-related section of every book and I have not once seen them described as weird or "alien."
The strong anti-semitism in Germany around WW2 also came with the belief that tall people with blonde hair and blue eyes were the superior race, which were physical characteristics very few Jewish people possesed. So there was a physical appearance element there as well.
I said closer than other ethnicities, not completely identical. Also, Anti-Semitism was alive and strong in Europe for hundreds of years, and in every country, before and during **** Germany, I'll remind you.
I'm sure that no elf could masquerade as a human permanantly, and I never said that they could. What I was getting at was that I didn't see how Elves could be seen as "alien" or an unusual fetish when, if you just covered up their ears, they looked practically 100% human.
They aren't described as weird or alien though. That's my point. That's why so many people take umbrage with DA2 elves looking like weird humanoid livestock when none of the dialogue in any game or book (that I know of), before or during, described or reacts to them that way.
Elves are considered "lithe and pointy-eared," "nimble and dexterous," "pleasing to look at." (At worst, some DAA companions tease Velanna for having ears like animals or clowns, but not for being alien.) Even the serial killer in Kirkwall wails as he kills elven children because "It's not fair that they should have such beautiful children!" ... which most people found jarring since those supposedly beautiful elven children were anything but.
They're described as attractive, sometimes implied to be ethereally so, and at worst thought to have some odd features despite their overall beauty (like Velanna's "clownish" ears, which still didn't stop people from commenting on her beauty), but not "alien" or an unusual fetish on the whole.

Someone on page 2 mentioned a part in the stolen throne where " In The Stolen Throne, Maric realizes why some people are attracted to elves, with their alien eyes".
I myself have never read it so I cannot confirm what the quote is exactly, but it does sound like he is saying he can see why some people find elves attractive with their unusual features, which would imply they don't look 100% human facially.

Don't get me wrong: while I liked the fact that they were trying to make the elves look different I though the vast majority of Dragon Age 2's elves were downright fugly. I always thought the lore implied elves looked exotic and differed from humans in good-looking and attractive ways, not the very strange and awkward appearances shown in Dragon Age 2.
You say that elves are beautiful and majestic, maybe even "ethereal" but surely saying that they can be considered more beatiful and majestic than humans implies that they look different to humans, if in a positive way. It's hard to be considered beautiful and majestic comapred to humans when they look exactly the same as humans, which they did in Origins, in my opinion. It's implied the Elves look different, but as you said, in a good-looking and exotic way.
I'm hoping inquisition can make them look attractive while still exotic and different enough to match comments about them looking unusual compared to humans.

The new designs aren't a step back from those.

Without reading the rest of the posts, I know there's a pic of Orana, Merrill in bed with Hawke or the bald unnamed elf in Kirkwall.

You got Orana and the background elf right.

Because we want to play an elf in DAI and if they look like DA2 elf's then no person will play them. I don't play ugly bones.Maria Caliban wrote...
Though... I don't really get why one would be passionate about the way elves look.
1. People were upset with the way DA 2 elves looked when it came out. Long before they knew they'd be able to play an elven PC in DA I.
2. World of Warcraft has a bunch of monstrous races that people play. Many players don't need their PC to be 'pretty.'
They complain about specific humans not looking 'right.'Marten Stroud wrote...
I wonder why few or no people have complained about the human designs.
Cullen is a pretty-boy. Cassandra's chin is too wide. Isabela's breasts are too large.

I think it makes more sense and is understandable if someone would handwave playing a not attractive character(in their opinion) in WoW but care quite a bit about it in a Dragon Age.

Do mean by player character wise (if so I agree) or as a game as a whole? *Prepares rolled up Warcraft lore paper to smack you with*LPPrince wrote...
To be fair, WoW is not so heavily story and character driven as a Bioware RPG is.

I didn't mind the DAO or DA2 elves. What I've seen of DA:I elves I don't mind those either.

I know but the elf design in DA2 was just really bad. Big, bulging eyes especially.

It wasn't great, but I liked it more than the DAO design. That was just so bland.

My pc does not have to be pretty, i can play an ugly pc without a problem.
I found the DA2 elves offensive and was always in a rush to get away from them in the game. I do not mind if one elf is ugly but i don't expect the whole race of elves to be completely moronic and deformed.
