Someone on page 2 mentioned a part in the stolen throne where " In The Stolen Throne, Maric realizes why some people are attracted to elves, with their alien eyes".
I myself have never read it so I cannot confirm what the quote is exactly, but it does sound like he is saying he can see why some people find elves attractive with their unusual features, which would imply they don't look 100% human facially.
All right, I probably missed that part. Still, how are the eyes described as "alien"? Do they look like fly eyes? Do they look like eyes that physically cannot belong on humanoids? Or is it metaphorically alien, as in physically human-looking eyes that just have some... essence that people find haunting. Like those classic "behind those eyes" descriptions.
Don't get me wrong: while I liked the fact that they were trying to make the elves look different I though the vast majority of Dragon Age 2's elves were downright fugly. I always thought the lore implied elves looked exotic and differed from humans in good-looking and attractive ways, not the very strange and awkward appearances shown in Dragon Age 2.
You say that elves are beautiful and majestic, maybe even "ethereal" but surely saying that they can be considered more beatiful and majestic than humans implies that they look different to humans, if in a positive way. It's hard to be considered beautiful and majestic comapred to humans when they look exactly the same as humans, which they did in Origins, in my opinion. It's implied the Elves look different, but as you said, in a good-looking and exotic way.
I said "sometimes implied to be ethereally so." As in not always, not for every elf, and not to every human. Maybe only some elves look that pretty (as attractiveness scales with elves the same way it scales for humans), or some humans think some elves are that pretty (since tastes vary with them as much as everyone else), but it's not like they all look like forest nymphs ready to enchant humans away.
My point is they're seen as attractive on the whole, and this made more sense in DA:O than DA2. I daresay their design in DA:O was not immersion-breaking for me because they're described as slim, lithe, nimble, dexterous, and other adjectives that seems to fit with their slim design. Being described as "lithe, nimble and dexterous" also implies that the way they move and walk can contribute to their perceived attractiveness. While this would have been far too difficult to animate for every elven character in the game (as it was a very ambitious project), I've no doubt it was in mind since characters use those words to describe them.
I'm hoping inquisition can make them look attractive while still exotic and different enough to match comments about them looking unusual compared to humans.
They're shorter, slimmer, and more lithe than most humans, which is unusual compared to humans. The new designs show more angular features, large pointed ears and large almond-shaped eyes, which are unusual compared to humans.
They have features that many humans consider attractive, but much more pronounced and much more common within their race than most humans (who mostly aren't that slim, lithe, angular, etc.). So they probably would be seen as unusual by humans in-universe (since Thedas doesn't have a pop culture that bombards them with images of beautiful skinny humans like ours does), but still decently attractive to real humans looking at the screen.
