I always thought Xena did "armorkinis" right. Not too overboard. Similar to DAO rogue armor in some ways.

These are examples of what I don't consider ok. That "armour" doesn't protect anything. The mage outfit isn't much less protective than regular mages robes against swords/arrows but it looks way to stripperific for me to take the person wearing it any more seriously than I can take a clown seriously (edit: though I'd be amazed that the person doesn't "pop" out of the outfit so to speak - a new school of magic?).

The worst offence of skimpy clothing/armour is how out of place it looks - especially compared to other armour in the game. If everyone, men included, wore skimpy armour and outfits, it would still be silly but at least it wouldn't feel it was put there just because one group of consumer's find that "hot". However, if male armour is designed seriously but the female armour isn't it becomes so much worse because it draws attention to it. Look at the Kingdom under Fire II picture on page 6 of this thread. The men get normal-looking, covering armour, the elven women... not so much. Considering the atmosphere in DA:I, with the Veil tearing and all, armour that is too skimpy would look even more strange and out of place.

If you consider the last pic as that of a middlingly expensive Thedosian prostitute specialising in a Mage (or Templar...) clientele with certain demands, it might be considered 'realistic'. But not for actual 'field use' ^_^ .

It's basically the fantasy equivalent of this...

paris-hilton10310619.jpg

Which makes me wonder: would we accept such costumes in 'modern', 'real-world-based', 'serious' shooters and RPG's?

Oh, wait... <_<

Edit:

For the purposes of general snickering, merriment and amused horror, here's male armour from a Skyrim mod.

It comes complete with nosering. That kind of attention to detail is certainly admirable  .

I removed the pictures so the quote won't be too large.

Yeah, I don't find it realistic at all, maybe a mage would use it in their bedroom but elsewhere... not really.

I don't like costumes like that in shooters either or real-world-based games either. I don't like it when they do it to male armour either - it looks just as ridiculous on men as it does on women.

Though that amount of detail is impressive in its own way I suppose... ;)

Well, one thing though: I may not think much of many of their visual designs, but BioWare has evolved beyond this. I vaguely remember some bikini-clad female in very early Dragon Age concepts, but that never went anywhere.

Anyway, some really archaic stuff, because 1) I think it looks cool, and 2) examples / influences for 'old' magic armour you might dig up in some ancient ruins...

Unlike everyone here I want fantasy, embellished, sexy armor.  If I want realism I'm going to go for Skyrim or ESO, I'd like a bit more fantasy.  Always been a fan of the fan-made armors, they were such a nice range compared to the Bioware stuff.

One change I really want to see... more mage PANTS especially for women.  And make dresses less crazy bulky, but really... just more pant + long jacket look for mages would be awesome.

Big shiny metal armor with decorations/filigree look for warriors... yes yes.

DA2 was kind of boring in the rogue armor department, but not sure how to make leather less... brown.  LOL

Crazy example: one heavy armor (don't know how she moves in that but it's attractive) and three mage outfits.

27_concept_armor1-2.jpg

Another one: the heavy armor is nonsense, but the leather is nice (which it was a mage armor), sexy mage armors... Hard to find PANTS for mages it seems lol

Sexy heavy armor:

I want the robe design but for females (almost the same, just tailor to a female body, no need to remove or add):

Skyrim isn't the best example of an RPG with realistic armor designs. The armor designs in Elder Scrolls games are closer to World of Warcraft than they are to history. They have a lot of the spiky over-sized nonsense that are the bane (IMO) of the fantasy RPG genre.

Skyrim is a good example for a lot of boring and bulky and far too much brownnnnnnn everywhere.  I used a code to get the black armor for my character cause the lower tier and normal armors were making me barf.

Some somewhat realistic heavy armor posted here looked good.  A lot of the very realistic pictures and even sketches from back in the day illustrate just how boring looking super realistic armor is.  I prefer armor that was used for parades than the stuff they wore in battle.  I like pretty things to look at not a million shades of brown and grey.

And mages should be sexy.  Their armor is their spells (rock armor hello!), there's no need to be realistic.  Can be lavish and fun and outrageous.

I think the problem with a lot of the real world armor designs being very utilitarian and plain in appearance, is a large part of the reason why we see so many ridiculous-looking armor designs in fantasy RPGs. The artists struggle to create something that looks interesting, and so we end up with stuff that is so fantasy-based or outlandish that it would not realistically be able to serve its intended function. Or in the case of female characters, we end up with 'armor' that has more skin exposed than covered. Because sexy.

That being said I still think realistic designs are the way to go. The key for the artists IMO is just not to copy/paste from history, but to take a realistic design and add some features that put that fantasy world's stamp on it, or that add some color or make it interesting. For example instead of just plain steel helmets throw in some feathers or horse-hair plumes, or other decorative features like engravings of dragons or griffons and such. For characters wearing mail, throw in colorful tabards and shields with heraldry that reflects the lore of that game world. Characters wearing plate can also have engraved designs on their chestplates, like for example Maximus with his horses in gladiator. Also cloaks and sashes and such can add color and make otherwise drab armor designs interesting.

But heavy armor being sexy-ish in the least is not realistic.  Only chainmail can conform to the body, plate armor conforming to your chest is actually a fairly bad idea (think movement).  I'm against looking like a man, I've had enough of playing tons of RPGs where I can't even play my own gender, don't want more RPGs were I can play a woman but look basically.. like a thin man.

Updated my original post with pictures, always been a huge gripe of mine that as a mage I couldn't wear pants most of the time.  Bring back pants+jacket for mages!  Down with the huge long bulky dresses.

There's no argument for realism when it comes to mages, is there?

Anything other than hyperrealistic bland-looking mid ages armor or World of Warcraft giant shoulders nonsense seems good to me.

^Finally! It seems as if everyone is either all about the uber realistic armour or the ridiculously huge WoW armours...I want a middle ground. I think Bioware should focus more on realistic swords than realistic looking armours...I mean remember Fenris and his great sword? It was a bit ridiculous, overall though considering this universe has dragons, magic, mages, dwarves, elves, giant horned people, and whole bunch of other **** people really shouldn't worry themselves with realism too much. As long as my pauldrons don't look as if they weigh 100 pounds each and my armor isn't overly realistic(where's the fun in that?) I'll be happy, also more mage pants pwease :3

No dresses for mages. They added some decent robes/armor mix with DA2, keep up more in that vain. Fugitives Armor, Aldenon's vestments, etc. Wide variety would be nice, at least 15-20 different unique sets.

And baldrics/holsters MUST be added. Floating weapons 'attached' to back don't belong in a modern game. Yes, even mages. Adding animations to walk with with weapons casually, and hold them while in conversations, would be neat too.

I would want more ove a dragon armour the helm looking like a dragon head the torso armor looking like a dragons scally skin withe two wing engraved on the back or like a small cape that looks like dragon wings and points at the botome like a dragons tale.

The greevs like on dragons dogma Dark Arisen withe the hellfire greevs they could look like dragons feet having claw points on the toe parts. And cause of the ability to change the colour of armour you can have them what coulour you want just picture it. A armour that resembles a dragon.

you guys have some awesome armor ideas! I would like to see more customization mix and match, colors, and more than 2 types in each class. sexy, chaotic, light, paladin, dragon hunter. The success or failure of a game depends on your ability to keep interested and coming back for more .

Bring back the Blood Dragon armor please. This time however make it as strong as it was in DA:O because in DA2 you get it early but becomes one of the weakest armor.

Yes!!!! Who cares if it's impractical, it's not like it's realistic to shoot fireballs from your hands either. To each their own I suppose but let me tell you, I would pick the girls' outfits of your first picture over both DAO and DAII's gear ANYTIME.
