*Great looking armour*

Point is, 'real-feeling' armour doesn't have to look plain, although I also favour being able to choose whether one wears good but 'simple' armour or a good but fancy-looking set. It's two different ways of dressing like a badass.

Anyway, looks as if we are going to get 'understated end of the spectrum' generic fantasy armour .
Which is okay for DA I guess.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. It's a real shame that things like these seem to clash with Bioware's preferred visual aesthetics.

I mean, come on! How is this not beautifull?

Sure, it might be a bit impracticall, but fantasy employs such elements left and right anyway. Why fighting in underwear would apparently be fine, but fighting in this would not?

16th century but as mix and match is being applied already, this would be a nice Orlesian helmet:

As horses are being introduced in the game this Spanish horse helmet would look great.

I´ll add some more ;)

But let's be careful what we wish for. Duke Prosper in DA2:MotA wore armour and clothing of (vaguely) 16th century inspiration, and he looked like an over the top clown. And the Xbox 360 / PS3 versions may force the visual quality 'downward' of the PC and next-gen versions anyway. Getting this stuff right requires a fair amount of visual detail.

I don't think we'll be getting any of this, so we're fine. :D

I will never, ever understand why any of those designs are supposed to look good. I appreciate that they're practical and functional, but good? Bleh.

I'll help you to understand: armor that would not work on a human being because of various highly obvious design flaws, no matter how fancy it may look, is stupid and therefore ugly. The ridiculousness and the design flaws of the armor nullify its cool look and makes the wearer look like a clown who has no idea how to protect him/herself properly.

But there is hope: you can have both! In my opinion the classic late 15th century knights armor is not only highly functional and a time-proven design, it looks damn cool. Functionality AND a cool design makes it damn beautiful.

I couple of pics of actual armor I made in a museum in Vienna:

Depends on how far they would be willing to go with the whole "mount" mechanic. The horse in the (undoubtedly very early) footage from gameinformer coverage did not have any.

Armour in games generally makes me slightly annoyed as it either looks to silly or impractical to me so make it look more like real armour. As some have said already that don't necessary means it have to be plain and duel and there have been some nice examples already.

 And of course, there's the less over the top, yet still cool-looking stuff (Renaissance-era and slightly later):

(Okay, more a cavalry commander's outfit. But still, very nice)

(Reconstruction of Dutch Pikeman armour, circa 1630. And yes, you can put a plume on the helmet)

A bit more embellished. But women look good in it too! ;)

I think a lot of the historical stuff makes the wearer looks bloated. I guess this is to deflect blows away, but I don't think it looks very good

Some of it does, sure. The thing is, though: a man (or a woman) in heavy armour should be looking like that at least a bit. They can always work on the silhouette a little and make it more acceptable for those who don't think it looks "heroic" enough. But this armour is a great starting point that eliminates various problems, like the shoulderpads of doom for example.

I don't think that's true actually, particularly in the case of custom-made late medieval / Renaissance armours. A lot of those look fairly slender. In earlier periods, people wearing armour wore padded gambesons underneath their chainmail and / or brigandine, and they often do look a bit 'bloated', simply because a good gambeson is pretty thick.
However, some of the plate armours posted were almost certainly of big (well, fat really) men.
In the case of Henry VIII...

Image IPB

And here's a late contemporary, Elector Johann Friedrich 'the Generous' of Saxony. A lot of Renaissance nobles and princes tended to get really fat in middle age...but portraits and surviving armour suits suggest they were young Gods in their younger years (and physically very active, by way of training, sports and hunting. They were very physical guys. King Robert Baratheon in Game of Thrones is actually a very good example, if in a fantasy setting).

I don't recall the name of it, but the Lion armor that comes in one of DA2's warrior pack is the most amazing looking armor I've ever seen in a video game. Ever.

I'm not really talking in size, but in shape.  A lot of the cuirasses seem strangely curved.

Image IPB

This one is perhaps a good example of what I'm talking about because it's clearly not down to the shape of the wearer unless the wearer was very weird.

You're probably talking about the wasp waist, this design feature distributed a lot of the weight of the upper armor on the hips and allowed the wearer to move faster and quicker than armor that only sits on the shoulder of the wearer. Thats a huge improvement.
The curved breast plate ensured that the wearer could breathe even in damaged dented armor, at that time war hammers and other anti-armor weapons were very common.

@Wulfram

Would sticking to a less extravagant and perhapes more streamlined silhouette, but keeping the majority of details unchanged make any difference then, to you personally? In fact, do you feel the same way about the armour below the one you've chosen in Tentakel's post?

@The Woldan
All of that is true, but I don't think anyone is putting that much thought into these designs. They are intended to serve a different purpose, after all. That does not mean, however, that the compromise between the historical accuracy and fantasy wish fulfilment cannot be found.
