Most of this historical stuff is bland and goofy looking. Its fantasy RPG. Go mildly crazy and make things that look cool and intimidating.
In my opinion, most fantasy RPG stuff is bland and goofy looking and historical stuff looks cool and intimidating.
A matter of taste, I suppose.

There's a reason that those nifty looking armors are in good condition even today, a couple hundred years after they were made: they never saw battle.
Why? Because even if they were designed as fully functional armor, who would charge into battle in his gold and gems encrusted armor that's sporting intricate smithcrafts like special patterns in the steel that look like a painting?
One battle and all that stuff you paid for to look exactly like a designer jacket after you got put through a grinder. Unnecessary costs. Ceremonial armor is for ceremonies. For battle you put on your bogstandard, boring looking steel plate.
That said, just because armor is geared for a hundred percent practicality and protection and did omit the fancy stuff whereever it need to achieve the best armor protection, doesn't mean it has to look bland.
Take a look at this:
Despite being a fanart piece, the armor coneption itself is solid. No spikes of villiany protruding, no contraproductive exposed parts, shield hand is enforced with additional plate whilst sword hand trades some protection for more freedom of movement. The toss some nice clothing on top of it all and violá, awesome looking armor that's entirely practical.
I just don't want to see stuff like this:
That first armor is perfect. Gimme. But with red. Then its more perfect.

:huh:hm... you do realize that is a rather historical armor, don't you? I thought you said you didn't like " historical stuff".AppealToReason wrote...

Actually, if the DAI were to take a little of the sorta RTS things from KUF for large scale battles I'd be so happy. BUt thats another thread.

Yeah the stupid crap that looks like akward metal bubbles with zero mobility that resembles bad robots from low production films without a few christmas lights strapped to it.

The more I think about it the more the Kingdom Under Fire games did armor well, at least for humans. I don't know how to post pictures or I would, but the human armors were primarily reality-ish based without being boring and stupid looking.

Those are for the elves. Which is actually heavy armor considering they used to just be straps.
But the humans like Kendall and Gerald and the whiney guy and the old guy actually had decent armors.

Funny how everyone completely ignored his original point that he was only extending the "reality'ish based" to the human armors to point out the elf bikini armor and acting as if the former was lying.

Yes, apparently this is what the men wear.

I'd be offended in solidarity but I can't stop laughing.

Dreamed this one up. It's basically a mash-up of different armor from multiple games (like the bracer and boot spikes...based on Sand furies from Fable 3) that I really thought would go well together. Would love for my rogue to get to wear something like that.
