More mage armours like the Champion Armour. IMO Best one in the series so far.

I get the iconic looks and all that - there are several cosplayers walking around in this outfit after all (but with a couple of million copies of the game sold, there are always some who go for this). However, I think it's also an example of why many people hate a lot of fantasy armour (not just DA2's).

- Anti-ergonomically designed, neck-and-back killing, massive-looking bevor that still manages NOT to protect the neck;

- Ponderous Spiky Pauldron . Isn't that supposed to be on the shoulder?;

- Mother of All Belt Buckles;

- Black jeans;

- Random spiky armoured glove. For fairly painful but highly effective back-scratching.

This is fantasy videogame armour design to a T. Things are grabbed and copied left and right, and these are NOT integrated into something that marries form and function into something that is both attractive and at least plausibly functional.
Visual impact seems to be the primary, maybe even the only consideration. And with a lot of people, the end result very effectively undermines the very impression it wants to make.

I wouldn't mind this stuff in a game like Darksiders or WoW, though. DA? Mweh, if I view it as a D&D comic in videogame format, perhaps.
I probably should anyway :mellow:.

Edit:
Ran into a very nice Tumblr feed a couple of days ago, called, 'Repair Her Armor': repair-her-armor.tumblr.com/
:wizard:

...and where I found this:

By way of comparison, showing how megaretarded it looks, here's King Francis I of France in precisely one of those fancy Renaissance parade armours...

Richly decorated perhaps, but it looks pretty functional and with a normal armour silhouette. It looks opulent but it's not a monument to Epic Suck.

Yeah, and he'd still not wear this in any battle were there's a remote chance of getting involved in battle. This armor gets a single solid blow and the treasury master will die of a heart attack.

The mage champion armour does at least manage to be cool as well as silly. But it's not the look I'd favour for Dragon Age.

The reason I really like the Mage Champion Armour (the only type I like) is because it was completely different to the usual bathrobes the mages get within the game. It was that simple really. Not once did I thought they were 'un-Dragon Age' like, even though I don't know what is considered to be DA like in the first place. Not too 'fantasy' like as well in comparison to those MMO's out there.
I also enjoyed the light steel armours you get specially tailored for mages as well. Just want different varieties thats all.

He's the King of France, he can well afford la coste. From a common person's perspective these armours were hideously expensive; a Milanese parade armour, the so-called Masks garniture, made for Charles V in 1539 would have supported a skilled Milanese worker and his family for 15 years. However, even in 1500 the French Crown's annual revenue would have been roughly enough for nearly 2,000 of these suits of armour. As the French monarchy kept on centralizing and rationalizing, this figure only increased; by Francis I's time, he probably could have bought several sets for each day in the year, if he really wanted to. This totally changes when the armours in question are battle / field armours etched with a bit of silvering and gildening, which reduces the cost radically but could still look stunning (and has all the rounded shapes you want for deflecting blows etc.).

That treasurer of Francis I would have been far more worried about his King wearing an embossed parade armour to battle because it's not strong enough for prolonged use in battle. Arquebus balls, crossbow bolts, warhammers and all that stuff...Cost is not the issue, battle-worthiness is (but in a fantasy setting, magic and magically enhanced metallurgy might take care of that).

Personal preference is another thing; some nobles and rulers seem to have preferred a relatively plain suit of armour, like the one belonging to Duke Karel of Gelre (and still preserved in Arnhem).

Contemporary tapestries from the Low Countries, for instance of the Battle of Pavia in 1525, seem to indicate nobles and cavalrymen did wear decorated armour (the tapestries being 'lo-res' most seem to show blackened armour with some gilding, more details are either absent or difficult to see. They look very much like Duke Karel's, really), but the real 'showiness' was for the surcoats and coats they wore over the armours themselves.

Posted Image

Pfew. Thus concludes the (hopefully not too boring) history lesson B).

Anyone in for moderately silver- or gold lined blackened (or blued) plate with a drop-dead gorgeous surcoat?

@Examurai: You like what you like, that's just how it is. And I get it that a lot of people don't like wizard's robes.
Personally I'm not too bothered by mages wearing them when they are within the Circle or in an official capacity, but when adventuring... It doesn't make much sense and often it looks silly. Something more 'active' and less scholarly would be normal. And that could very well include some form of armour that protects the really vulnerable places, like a nice etched cuirass for the torso. And a sensible form of headcover, like THAT hat, a light, open-faced helmet or a nice turban. Whatever works for you.

Posted Image

Personally, I rather like this one. A few too many belts and buckles, but basically it looks practical for a 'battlemage'.
Protected, but not too much, and simple yet attractive looking.
Perhaps add an etched breastplate and simple vambraces (and maybe THAT hat, but a cool turban is fine too) :)

Mix and match.....

For mages would love to see some more colour. Something like this:

It's Cossack and picked this pic because would love to see differentiation in clothingstyle for mages that are from different regions in Thedas. Can picture this style for the Antivia region.

While I am not 100% against 'boobie armor' (what can I say, I'm a red-blooded man and I like what I like :whistle: ), I still have to say that this is really cool, practical and dare I say it; sexy, and I would hope that more female armor look like this.

@AresKeith: I would pay actual, real money to have Titania's armour in game. And her hair.

Mostly I'd like to see something that is practical without being dull. The Fugitive's Mantle, Aldenon's Vestments and the Robe of the Notorious Pirate are all good examples of how to make mage gear that is attractive and practical.

I'd really love Merrill's outfit, especially the footwear. Possibly for a elven mage or rogue, not very practical but makes for more nimble movement and quieter footfall...perfect for sneaking up behind someone....
