A few additions. More as examples what can be done with a bit of colour (surcoats and decorated tunics and gambesons) and fairly moderate (and occasionally not so moderate) amounts of armour decoration.
I have no expectation of anything like this appearing in a DA game, but it's nevertheless nice to see how varied armour visuals can be, yet still be wholly functional (okay, one might want to ditch a cloak in battle. Or use it as an improvised shield).
However, a very important thing that I suspect has to be 'cracked' before we can get a wide variety of beautiful-yet-plausible armour is physics. Until cloth, chainmail and plate don't broadly behave as in real life, we'll always get stuff that is simultaneously unnaturally 'stiff' and 'stretchy'.

(even if these are lightly equipped, the colour makes a big difference compared to ‘brown is real’ armours)

Erm...hello?
But all I wanted to do was ask for directions!

And here's a really nice history / fantasy mix:

Edit:Come to think of it, I rather like what Chivalry (have it, still have to play it...) has done with historically based / inspired armour...

I think I love their visual style anyway...

Historically inspired, but not a slave to it...
