An entire race is a massive asset.

You wouldn't get the perfect ending.

One of the reasons I think it's necessary to require it is that a perfect ending would be the obvious choice to canonize. Some players would object to it, but not that many. And so all the races need to be alive so they can exist in ME 4.

What's the perfect ending?

They're free to think whatever they please. However, that doesn't mean they have any justification to demand that the narrative must agree with them.

Just as you have no justification to demand that it agrees with you.

A conventional victory, with the nonconventional solution preferably not going to waste somehow. All races, all squadmates, and Shepard unambiguously survive. Relays intact. The Reapers defeated in a single moment of great skill, willpower, or courage from Shepard.

Ok.

I disagree with that being perfect.

I believe conventional victory should be impossible, I believe several races ought to go extinct, I definitely believe many squadmates should no longer be breathing by the end of the game, I think Shepard should live, and I think that the Reapers should be defeated by the combined effort of the galaxy, not just Shepard.

See, different opinions.

That's nice. Maybe you should write some fan fiction.

I don't need to. I can do everything I said I'd get in a perfect ending without fanfiction.

You can't. Have fun in la-la land.

With the way the narrative is structured in ME3, "conventional victory" would actually be the fan fiction.

Which is exactly why it would require a significantly different structure.

In my perfect ending, Shep and co. defeat the Reapers by using the Elements of Harmony.

And the relays being intact.... and all the squadmates surviving.... and Shepard being heroic.

I don't quite know how I wanted it to end but I'm not exactly happy with what I've got.

Yep, the narrative is clear about the use of the crucible being the only way to beat them.

David should pay better attention to it.

Now I'm interested,

How would you restructure ME3 to allow for such a victory, no altering ME1/2

To make things ideal, some changes to ME 1 and 2 would be necessary.

building off of your idea for ME2's ending, how would you change ME3?

Then you'd have to go into it knowing that you're making a trilogy. Writers didn't have that privilege.

I wanted it to end by blowing up the reapers, toasting beer over their corpses, some funeral scene for Anderson and a speech about honouring the dead. Then a big party following Shepard walking of with Liara back to his place.

You know, a normal sane ending.

By normal and sane you mean terribly boring and cliche.

And borderline illogical, given the scale of the enemies.

Guess I should quit my playthrough of the Baldur's Gate games now then, since by the end I'll be slaying ancient dragons, demon princes, and demigods.

Such a totally illogical ending, what was I thinking!

Most videogames wouldn't exist if realism was to be implemented. Still, there is "unlikely" and there is the realm of "lolwut". Beating the Reapers conventionally would be more of the second if ME1 is anything to go by.

Wait, they did know.  Losing and getting new writers is the problem, IMO.

Making heavy changes to the Battle of the Citadel. Reworking the collectors a bit in ME 2. Change Arrival to better justify the Reaper invasion and the beginning of ME 3.

If possible, add a few levels in ME 2 showing off shipyards, planetary shields, electronic warfare equipment, that sort of thing. Give the player a sense of the progress being made. Alter a lot of dialogue with Council.
